Dog House Canteen news!

Today at our year-end assembly, the Dog House Canteen girls were called up to receive the Young Humanitarian Award from MTS vice president, James Bedford. It was so nice to be able to share this with the BHS community! The girls received medals, and the school received a framed certificate. We will hopefully display it right beside the canteen!

Thanks for your support this year. The Dog House Canteen will be up and running during the 2017-2018 school year. Stay tuned!

Last day of Grade 5!

This week was full of "lasts". Thanks to the Canada 150 Committee for planning so many fun activities this week. Some highlights were the spirit week themes, the school-wide soccer games and scavenger hunt! We also had 8 students show off their talents at the variety showcase on Tuesday. We had some great expert projects presented . . . even 4 today - what dedication! We ended our Friday with so many tears!

Thanks to all of you for a fantastic year in Room 31! I know you will love Robert Andrews (and MBCI, Carter) next year. Please keep us posted with your summer adventures . . . your Kidblog account will remain active until mid-August!

Ms. Wasney  :)

Grade 5 Farewell video!

Thanks to Mrs. Dent Scarcello for taking the fantastic pictures of the Grade 5 students and putting together the video! The students had a hard time seeing this on Monday from where they were sitting . . .  so I thought I'd post it! I just love what everyone shared during the video!

I think there just might be some tears tomorrow! LAST DAY! Are you ready?!

Grade 5 Farewell!

What a day it's been! Thanks to all the families for celebrating with us this afternoon! A big thank you to Alyssa and Emmy, who are now in Grade 8 for helping put up the farewell posters (I taught them K, Gr 3 AND 5), Mrs. Dent Scarcello for putting together a slideshow, Mrs. Knoll and the Grade 4s for singing, and Mrs. Rand, Mrs. Gregg, and Mrs. Lachance for handing out cake and lemonade. It was so much fun to see everyone get loads of signatures on their shirts today. Be sure to bring them back to get other teachers and students to sign them!

Here's Nicole's valedictorian speech:

Hello friends, families and grandparents!

Welcome to the grade 5 farewell. My name is Nicole and I am the valedictorian from Ms. Wasney’s class. I came to BHS when I was in kindergarten. It was such a great time. We have learned so much in the past 6 years. One of my favourite things was having a garden in our classroom in Grade 2! One memory I have from this year is going on a ZOO field trip! We saw so many animals they were super cute! Someone in my class suggested I do some jokes. So here’s one: what do you call a 3 humped camel… Pregnant!

In Grade 5, we have had many opportunities to be leaders. Some of us have been patrols or peacemakers. You also have an option to join S.P.I.N club. Let me tell you what S.P.I.N stands for. It stands for Support People In Need. It’s when you do fundraisers to support people in poor countries. For example all the grade fives did a water walk. A Water Walk is what girls have to do every day of their lives. They walk 6 km each day to get water from a very dirty river. They walk all the way back to their home and they have to drink it! One thing we did this year was Outdoor Classroom Day in May. Over one million kids across the world participated in it too!

At Bird’s Hill, we have been very lucky to be able to join so many sports and music clubs. Thank you to Mrs. Rand and Mrs. Knoll for spending so much time running these clubs. I had so much fun with the WSO club!

Here’s two things I will miss about BHS is… Ms. Wasney she is such a funny teacher. I really enjoyed everything in Room 31, especially art. I even made this art called the monster selfie art. It’s really cool and so cute. I will also miss my friends even though some of them will be going to Robert Andrews. I have made new friends throughout the years. They are really kind to me and I will miss them during the summer.

Thank you to all the teachers and Mrs. Palamar for teaching us everything in the past 6 years. And thank you to Mrs. Palamar for being an awesome principal in the school. Wishing you all the best in the future. Have a great summer! And I can’t wait to see you at Robert Andrews!

Canada 150 Spirit Week!

We will be having a Canada 150 Spirit Week for the last week of school! It will be fun to show off some Canadian pride and share some school spirit!

Teachers will also be on the lookout for students singing Oh Canada each morning!

A Good-bye TWAS!

How do we only have 5 days left of school?! We've had a super busy 2nd last week of school. We were so lucky to have had our Activity Day on Tuesday - it turned out to be the nicest day all week! Please see an earlier post for a video! The students have been working so hard on their farewell posters. It's definitely one of my favourite things at the end of June. It's so fun to read all the lists and of course, see the adorable baby pics! We are looking forward to Monday! Today, all the Grade 4s and 5s were treated to a pizza lunch as a thank you for being student leaders this year. We also had NINE expert project presentations this week! I hope we can get to see a few more before the end of the year!!

Here's Kate's TWAS from her Kidblog account:

Hey guys,
To day is the.........*crying*..........last TWAS. I know.....very very sad. But I have a goal. I am going to get up to 1000 words. So to complete that goal I am going to add as much detail as I can! Lets do this:

On Monday we tested our science designs! Reminder: For science design we had to make things out of only scissors, tape and newspaper to block the sun when you are outside. But here's the catch, It had to stay on our heads while we run from the bus loop doors to the flag pole! The design worked great. It stayed to Ryeland's head as if it was glued to it Also we did BHS reads. I am still reading the book 'stick dog" It is a very good book with a lot of humor! Also we had our first expert project presentations. Me and Rhyann got to present. I think I did very well, and I had a lot of in formation about Patrik Laine! I had a lot of compliments and I didn't get very many suggestions. And I only said "I don't know" to one question. I feel very proud of myself for talking in front of my class and being confident in myself, I can't wait to see more expert project presentations! The last thing we did (or I ma going to share with you guys) is got the laptops and we finished up our farewell lists for our grade five posters. Ms. Wasney looked over mine and we printed it. The lists turned out great!

On Tuesday we had.....field day! Our last field day ever at Bird's hill school. It didn't feel like the last field day. It felt like a normal field....but it wasn't. This year as a grade fiver we got to run a station! There were a variety of stations to choose from. But as soon as me and Katie heard baseball/softball we knew right away that we wanted to do that station. So it happened! We got to sign up for baseball/softball! And it got even better! Ryeland joined me and Katie! All of us were so happy for field day! Then in the afternoon (after hot lunch-hot dogs and hamburger) we got the opportunity to do some of the activities. So me, Ryeland and Katie did a lot of the activities and we all got either gold or silver! It was the best last field day ever!

On Wednesday we had health. In health we watched a video on how the girls with look like when they are all done puberty. I think it gave me a lot of info on how I will transition to a young girl to a big girl. I think the video was good! Also we had music. In music we presented our own songs that we created on the recorder to the class. Me and Isabella were partners so we presented together! We did awesome! We made a few mistakes but I think we would have done better if we got more practice! Also we did BHS reads. I practiced Ryeland's words with him! He is getting so good at reading! Then once I finished practicing with him, Katie did the test to him where we still practice his words with him but if he gets it right he gets a checkmark on the back and if he gets the word wrong then we put a question mark or an x. But he did not get very many questions marks or xs.
On Thursday we had our last book buddies. For our last book buddies me, Willow and Kenzie got a circular speech bubble and we had to write or draw a picture of our favorite memory of book buddies! We wrote down our favorite memory of book buddies was when we had free time outside one time. That was seriously my favorite memory! Also it was the final day of the canteen ever...........I..........am...........speechless. It was so sad. I know, I know it felt like a normal day of the canteen. But it was sad. (ok I know, I am not speechless) Ok enough of that sad thing. Another thing we did was farewell posters. We started yesterday (Wednesday) But I forgot to write about that. I finished mine and it looks great. I added some sparkly borders around the lists and pictures and it looks amazing! I love my poster and I can't wait for everyone to see it!
On Friday we worked on our farewell posters, but as I just told you I finished so I started my comic life for term 3. I picked pictures from a variety of choices. And I have 6 pictures to put in my comic life. I added the pictures and I did the background. All I need to do is the speech bubbles  and the title. But I am a little nervous because we saved it but Ms. Wasney said " it isn't a guarantee that it is saved so I am crossing my fingers and saying "please be saved, please be saved". But we will find out soon! Also we did TWAS. I am now on the second thing of Friday. And I am trying so hard to get to 1000. I think I am going to get there but I just to have as many words as I can. So, how do guys like my TWAS so far? I am sorry if I missed spelled some words. Ok, another thing we did was health. All we had time to do today was read the questions from the question box. I think that every time we have more health classes we ask more questions. I think the answer is to that is because we are learning more and we have more questions to ask. Well, I think I did pretty well today, I beat my goal and I am glad! Goodbye and  hope to talk you again! Thank- you for reading my TWAS! Don' forget to comment below!

Young Activists in Grade One!

A BIG shoutout to Mrs. Tresoor's Grade One students who were featured on CTV News last night! The students went walking on Earth Day and noticed a whole bunch of dog poop bags left all over the pathways in our community.

They took action by writing a letter to the mayor of East St. Paul. Shelly Hart visited the students to discuss the problem and published their letter in the local newsletter.

We hope that the residents of the community start treating our surroundings with respect!

Way to go Grade Ones!

Activity Day!

Wow! Today was just the most perfect day for our Activity Day and Hot Lunch! We truly lucked out with the weather! Did you know 120 students and adults volunteered their time to help out with Activity Day?! Grade 5s and parents ran stations in the morning. Then, over 40 students from Robert Andrews helped out parents in the afternoon! It was so great to see some "old" students! Thanks to all the families that joined us outside for a picnic lunch! And then we ended the day with freezies, thanks to PAC!

A "hole in one" week!

We were super busy with TWO field trips this week! We really wanted to test our science design projects, but unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate! Our fingers are crossed for Monday!

Here's Braden's TWAS from his Kidblog account:

On Monday,
We went to UPuttz, IT WAS SO FUN, And the first place I went to was the mini golf, and I think I got 3 hole ones, but one of the hole in ones, I shot the ball on the 13 hole and It rolled out in to number 14 hole and IT GOT IN, and when I was finished I went to lazer tag, and I came in 6th place, which was pretty good but on of the rounds I stayed in one place and I would just shot people, and on the last game I played I think I came in first place I think. And then we went to skinner and I got soft vanilla ice cream, and It was so good. And when we got back we did are science design, and mine is an umbrella and it has a flat handle.
On Tuesday,
We did are fathers day gifts, for the mug that I'm giving to my dad, and on one side it has a weight on it, and the other side has (MMA)on it, and for the last side it has a (R). And  the one for my step dad, It has a (S)on it and for the other side It says (Bacon goes good with every thing) because he loves bacon and he has a shirt that says that, and for the last side it has a golf club on it with grass. And we had health, and my favorite thing about it is the... QUESTION BOX, because I can learn very good questions.
On Wednesday,

We had are Robert Andrews tour, And I was in group (white) and we had Jackson as a tour person, and I'm most excited to do the  wood, because I love building thing, and I love the smell of wood, I also love using tools, like saws and stuff, and I'm also excited for gym because the gym is much bigger and it looks so fun. We had gym, and we played 3 activity's, -Number 1, soccer -Number 2,scooter ball -Number 3, spongee polo, And my favorite was soccer it was so fun.
On Thursday,
Father's Day cards!
We had BHS reads, and I was reading (the most dangerous things on planet) and its a super cool book, well if you wanna see the possible ways you can die from things like a tsunami, but whatever. And we did are farewell list and one of the places I want to travel to is (LA, CALIFORNIA)and one of the thinks I want to be when I'm adult is A CHEF, and a boxer as well.
On Friday,
We Had BHS reads, and I was reading a joke book and ill tell you one of the joke(what do you call a polar bear with head phones) anything he cant hear you, that's one of my favorite. And we had math, and just looking at it I thought I was genius.

Field trip on a Monday?! Yes please! :)

We have started off our week in the most amazing way! Today, we headed to UPuttz to play laser tag, glow in the dark mini golf, and bumper cars! It was SO MUCH FUN! We had lunch and then hopped on the bus to go out to Skinner's in Lockport for ice cream!

Thanks so much to PAC for subsidizing the cost (paying for lunch, ice cream, and the transportation).

What a fun way to celebrate a great year! Can you believe there's only 3 weeks of Grade 5 left?!

A week of Field Trips!

We've been having lots of fun this week! The students handled two quizzes really well, started science design projects, and enjoyed 2 field trips.

Here is Rhyann's TWAS from her Kidblog account:

Monday-
Today we had a science quiz. It was way easier then the quiz review. I think I did well. But I am in sure about one of the questions. I think a lot of people did well on it. We had expert projects. I am doing Brent McMahon. I finished my power point. I just need to find some pictures. I am having a hard time finding labeled for reuse pictures. If you can help me please help. We had a lockdown and a fire drill. I think it is important to practice stuff like this so that if it really happens then we can be prepared. We were in music when the fire drill happened and  so some kids were glad that music was cut short. But I was sad.
Tuesday-
We had a math quiz. It  was pretty easy if you did your homework and if you did your work at school. I think that it was pretty easy. Did you guys think it was easy? We had gym and we are doing the baseball unit. We are learning how to hit when Mrs. Rand pitches it to us. It is a bit challenging to hit when it is pitched to you. But I like the baseball unit so far. Do you guys like the baseball unit. How many of you play baseball or softball outside of school. We started these farewell lists. The farewell lists will go on are posters that hang in the gym on the day of are farewell. The lists that we have to right about is. What we are thankful for an example is that I am thankful for is Clean water because we can go to the tap and get some water. But some girls have to walk six miles to get dirty water. Places you want to travel. I said Pairs, New York and Prince Edward Island. We had a lot more lists to write but here were two of them.
Wednesday-
We went to the zoo for a filed trip. I loved to see the animals there. My favorite animal was the cougars. Because  in grade four I reached about the cougars. I also liked to see the baby polar bears because when I went over spring break they did not have them yet or they did not want to come out and see us. What were your favorite animal that you got to see there? Did  you like to see the journey to church hill? I was happy to not see the snacks. I liked going to the nature playground for lunch. My mom left us a really nice comment. She said that we are really good and she wants to volunteer in are class again. My mom took me home early. we went to dollarma to get pool noodles. Then after that we went to McDonalds for hot fudge Sundays. the fudge just came out of the freezer so the fudge was really cold. When we got half way home I just remembered that I needed stickers  for my poster. And then when we got home we swam. I swam for about two hours then we got out and went to get Dyson. After we dropped off Dyson at home we went to Robert Andrews to pick a interment.
Thursday-

We started are science design. We have to make something that will cover are body and we have to be able to run and play and do other stuff and it can not fall of. my partner is Morgan. We are making an umbrella. But it is hard to make it. We had gym and we got to play baseball. Mrs. rand pitched for us. I hit it the first time but it was a pot fly. We had popsicles from Ms.Ross because are room was very hot. So thanks to ms. Ross for that.
Friday-
We got to go bowling if you were a patrol or peacemaker. We had to cut bowling short. We had a lot of fun. We had health and we were starting to talk about rules of the health. we had gym and we were doing stations. I was with Kate. We had a lot of fun. We had Twas as well. It is getting harder to do it because we have to write three things   and it is getting way harder to write about it. I love TWAS!

Field trip to the Zoo and Nature Playground!

On Wednesday, June 7th, we went to the Assiniboine Park Zoo and Nature Playground. It was just the most perfect day! Our guide, Bran, for the Journey to Churchill exhibit was amazing!

Here is Carson's write-up from his Kidblog account. Then, be sure to watch the video!

Today we got to go on a field trip to the........ZOO!!! (Well I guess you know but whatever) and it was a blast, we spent most of time at the new journey to Churchill and we got the see other animals on the way their at the start.
First we went on the bus though downtown and to the zoo, when we got there we went out and went to the bathroom ( but you do not know that) Then we started our journey at 10:30 and are leader was bran, he was so funny at first but then we got to the reindeer he said all of them were girls then yelled "girl power" at that probably hurt all the boys in the inside but he was still a great leader.
Then we finally got to the Churchill exhibit ( after a lot of talking) First we saw the snowy owls and bran told us they can turn their heads 270 degrees, that's so cool everyone said they already knew that but I did not. Then we saw some artic fox's and then we got to see the thing that I was most excited about, the......... polar bears!!!!! They were so big and we went I a tunnel and over top and beside where the polar bears were and they keep on kicking off a rock to get lots of speed and flip over, then out of nowhere we saw some seals, they were swimming upside down then turned down right before they would hit the wall. After we saw some other animals that I do not know their names but then we got to go to the toucan ridge that's where we saw the red pandas and all the other bird and other stuff that are slow like sloths and yeah.
The park part,
After we got to the park we all eat are lunch then we got to play. Most of us kids played mantracker and the first time I was it so I didn't know where you can go and where you cant go so yeah, the next time I hid in the forest with Carter R then we found Corbin and Carter W, we made signals and it was so fun their.
That's all I can tell you about the field trip. BYE

A successful Water Walk!

It was an amazing end to our week today! All the grade 5s participated in a 4km walk to collect water from the pits on Bird's Hill Road. It was really warm out . . . definitely the hottest day we've had yet this spring! Thanks to Mrs. Tresoor, Mrs. Dyck, Ms. Ross, Mr. Lewis, and some parent volunteers for joining us on the walk!

Today for our exit questions today, I asked:

- How many jugs did you carry?
- Would you want to do a water walk again?
- What did you learn from the experience?

The answers I got were terrific! I think the weather helped make the activity truly feel authentic! And, overall students expressed appreciation for what we have compared to what kids lack in other parts of the world.

Thanks for supporting this activity through pledges! We will gladly accept them on Monday as well! The SPIN Club will be forwarding all money to "WE Schools".

A +30 TWAS!

How is it JUNE already?! This month is totally going to fly by! We've had another wonderful week at school. Today was definitely an exciting day. The Dog House Canteen sold Menchie's AND home made cupcakes! One hundred cupcakes were donated to the canteen, thanks to a friend of Isabella's family!

Today all the grade fives did a 4 km "Water Walk". It was incredibly hot out, which was actually so fitting and made the walk feel that more authentic! In some countries, girls have to fetch the water for the family, and they are unable to attend school. Thank you to the parents that joined us!

Here is Kate's TWAS from her kidblog account:

Hey kid blog readers!
Here's my TWAS!
On Monday we had a substitute in for Ms. Wasney! Her name was Ms. Allen. She was very nice! While she was in for Ms. Wasney we had book buddies! If you have forgotten my two buddies are Willow and Mackenzie! They are awesome buddies! We read some books! They were really good books! Also we worked on our expert projects! I found lots of great info and I got started on typing it on word! The next time we work on our expert projects I am going to try to finish on word!
On Tuesday we did our 30x30 nature challenge. We read! i read "dog lost" i am so close to finishing. I am so excited to finish it! Also we started working on our science quiz review! I did really good at the review (not to brag) and i found out that the review is harder than the actual quiz. So I feel really, really good about the quiz!
On Wednesday we did some long division word problems! They were really fun and easy. On some problems there wasn't enough room to write, I had to write sideways, it is hard to read but it worked! Also we started to mark our science quiz review. I did ok, I didn't read some of the questions right so i got a few wrong but all need to do is study and i will be fine!
On Thursday we voted on a table group design. Me and my friends table group design won! So we got to pick where we want to sit for the month of June first! For the month of June I am sitting with Katie, Isabella and Ryeland! This is going to be the best month ever! Also we started writing a letter to our next years teacher. We were are supposed to tell them all about ourselves as a person, so far I have wrote about my family, the places I have traveled to and about the dog house canteen! I am not almost done, but I will finish soon!
On Friday we had gym! We played 3 ball baseball. I got a grand slam! After I threw the 3 balls I got o second! I was so happy! After the next person went which was Kenzie, i got home! " Thanks Kenzie!" Also we went on our water walk for SPIN club! I haven't gone on the walk yet, but I know I am going to carry one jug of water. I am excited for the walk and not because it is going to be so hot. But I will survive! Thanks for reading my TWAS! P.S. sorry my TWAS is so short! Bye!
