Writing in a different voice is a challenge . . . but fun!

We have been working hard on a novel study over the last few weeks! We are currently reading Owls in the Family by Farley Mowat. The students have to complete a job for each chapter, and then we will be working on final projects when we finish the book. The final projects are my favourite part of Novel Study! Today, the task was to retell the events of Chapter 6 in the voice of a different character. This was the best chapter to do this with because the setting is a pet parade with a wide variety of characters! When I was introducing the job, I saw a sea of confused faces . . . until I demonstrated (literally standing on a chair!) and shared what I was looking for in this writing job. I was so pleased with what the students came up with! Several students wrote in the voice of animals, not just people! When Emmy was done her work, she decided to take it one step further and wrote in the voice of Railay and Wilton! These are so adorable, I just had to share. Month in Review!

Month in review January,2012
This month I enjoyed… The heart job with the pastels and water color paints and it was really fun you got to draw hearts with pastels and really nice colors that you got to use to paint your heart job and the colors were water color paints and when the paint was still wet you had to put salt on it and when it was dry ms.wasney would wipe off the salt and it would leave a cool design. And another art job we did was the attribute shield and it was fun to do you got to draw a circle and then cut it out but befor that you had to fill a booklet and then you got to cut it out and then paint it and then draw a animal that belongs to you and matches you and then you pasted it on. And I also enjoyed gymnastics club and it actually really fun because you learn more moves for gymnastics and then you get better if you already new some moves you learn more moves.
In science grade threes are learning about magnets and what they have to do is try and make other stuff in to megnets and they had to do experiment if stuff actually stick to the megnets. And grade fours have to learn about sound we get to use tuning forks hit it on your shoe and then you have to put it up to something and see what happens and then you have to draw and write something down like what did you see and what did you here and grade threes have an experiment and they have to do something involving megnets or gravity and grade fours have to do a musical instruments that change pitch from high to low and there are some ideas like drums thimbulls gautars marocaus and blocks.

TWAS

T.W.A.S
This week we started Measurement in math and so far I like doing it. In E.L.A we started novel study the book we started is Owls in the family it is good so far! The grade four did an awesome science experiment with tuning forks! In S.S we did mapping and the first two pages were hard. Yesterday we did a cool art job! We did valentine art. We used oil pastals and salt. We had lots of Gym and in gym we have done lots of tag games. The grade fours did French and we learnt about the days of the week and the months.

Funky Word Clouds

On Tuesday, I was introduced to Tagxedo at a workshop hosted by Mrs. Dent Scarcello. Tagxedo is like Wordle, but so much better! You can create word clouds in different shapes! I can't wait to try this out with the students of Room 5!

How many times can you find your name in here?!

Partner Design Project

Over the last week or so, we worked on a Partner Design Project in the classroom. The task was to create a device that used gravity to get Billy Bob the Bear down from a tree. Some of the Grade 4s had prior experience with this, which was fine! The main objective was for the students to use the Design Process and to work well with one another. This activity was more challenging than the students were expecting! I really wanted to stress that it's the journey, not just the "end product" . . . and that it's perfectly okay to change your design; as long as you state it in the logbook. I truly value cooperation and enjoyed watching the students work together. This was great practice for their upcoming, independent, design project in science!

TWAS

Today, we did TWAS for the first time on the Netbooks! We were pretty excited to learn that we could send our work to be printed out in the Computer Lab to be picked up. Thank you to Emmy for volunteering to share her TWAS on the blog!
TWAS    Jan.-20-12
This week at school we did ELA.I liked daily 5 because me and Haley are writing a story about monkeys and their names are Haley and Emmy and we try to save Renee from Faith and we meet Memphis the elf. In math I like doing regrouping because it’s fun and it is kind of easy. In science the grade 3s are doing magnets and the grade 4s are doing sound. Yesterday a kid named Josh came in our class and helped us in science. We did a design project with partners my partner was Memphis we did a parachute with balloons it was really hard because we were going to use an egg carton but it did not work! We used a toilet paper roll instead. In social studies we are starting mapping It’s REALLY HARD!! In music we are learning hard songs. Today was hot lunch!! I had pasta with butter a cookie,kool-aid jammer. By Emmy J

"CAP" Comments for Blog Posts

I love that so many of the students of Room 5 are leaving comments on this blog! Today, we talked about leaving appropriate comments for our classmates. A well-written comment should . . . compliment the author OR make a connection in some way, ask a question about the post, and have a polite ending (such as leaving your name). I look forward to reading some awesome comments!

Attribute Shields

We have been working on Attribute Shields which was a job that involved ELA, Social Studies, Health, and of course . . . ART! The students had to choose colours that represented their different attributes, or personality traits. Then, they had to choose an animal from Medicine Cards from the Aboriginal culture. Next, they had to create a write-up that described each colour and their chosen animal and explain why that attribute was perfect for them. Students typed up their write-ups and then this week, we were able to get creative! We painted the shields and drew our animals. It was a fun activity and I think the students were quite insightful in choosing their colours and animal! Enjoy the video!

Gravity is G-R-R-R-E-A-T!

This afternoon we were lucky to have Josh from Grade 5 to help out in our classroom. Josh was an awesome "Room 5 Expert"; as he had been in my class for Grade 3 AND Grade 4! He used a timer to keep track of the Grade 3s working on a Gravity experiment. The students were seeing how gravity worked against them as they held a number of books away from themselves. It was quite the workout!

The Grade 4s were busy creating scenes that showed 5 (or more!) sounds taking place. I was impressed with the ideas they came up with . . . a Jets game, a beach, a playground, and many more! It's amazing how we can filter all the different sounds around us!

Ah, yes . . . it's never a dull place in Room 5!

TWAS

                                       By:Branden
Something that was new for me was the shield art we did the shield art last year but I chose a different animal and different colours. The grade fours are doing different science projects this year and the grade threes are learning about magnets and forces and gravity. The Grade fours are doing sound. It was new for me because I did a different science project last year. Something that I enjoyed this week was new years resolution crackers because I like making new goals for the new year and I liked making cool designs with my scissors. And what I also enjoyed this week was the one hundred word spelling test because I like challenging myself with harder words.

Scotiabank Skaters + Winnipeg Jets = Amazing Opportunity!

My dad shared a video with me about the Scotiabank Skaters Program and the Winnipeg Jets! With the help of your parents, you can enter here for a chance to win the opportunity to be the flag bearer at one of the Winnipeg Jets' Home Games! Boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 14 that play hockey are encouraged to apply! I'm crossing my fingers for the hockey players of Room 5!

New Year's Resolutions!

Earlier in the week, we did some writing about New Year's Resolutions. We talked about goal setting, and each student had to create a goal for home and school. Many students decided to take it one step further and set a goal for their hobbies or sports. I was really impressed with how ambitious everyone was! We then used good ol' toilet paper rolls to make "crackers" to display one of our goals for others to read about on the bulletin board outside our classroom. It was a fun activity! Please take a peek at the video . . . .

Welcome Back!

It was so nice to see all of you after a wonderful Christmas break! Wow! We all looked a little tired, so I know it's going to be a challenge getting back into a routine again! One student looked at his watch today and said, "10:12, if I was at home, I'd still be sleeping"! I think we all agreed! Ha Ha Ha

I was really excited that we were able to finish presenting our Province Research Projects today! You all worked so hard and it really showed! Thanks to Ms. Booth for creating the province posters! That was very helpful and I appreciated it so much!

I hope you enjoy the video!
