AAA Art inspired by Norval Morrisseau!

On January 21st 2015 we worked with Mrs. Kulyk all morning. We learned about Norval Morrisseau and the type of art he was known for. Then, we got to create our own art! First we had to choose an animal from samples on the wall. And then we had to sketch out on a rough copy paper and do the details. The second step of this art is to draw it out on watercolour paper. Then we had to go over everything with sharpie.

Another step was we had to paint to do the designs. The 2nd last step was to bring it to a teacher and get it dried with a hair drier. The final step was to touch up your artwork with thick sharpie. We recommend this art to people that have a lot of time to do this art because this took us the whole morning. It just didn’t take us all morning we also did it in the afternoon!

We rate this art five out of five stars.

Trying out a new classroom communication tool: Remind

Students are bringing home a note today about a unique communication tool called "Remind". Parents are encouraged to subscribe to receive classroom reminders via text or email. This is a one-way communication tool; there is no way to reply to the message.

Thanks to Mrs. Dent Scarcello for sharing this neat tool with all of us teachers!  :)

Chilly morning + hot apple cider = perfect treat for a good cause!

Congratulations to Aimie from our class for organizing a fundraiser for the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation. Today, Aimie and her mom served up 132 cups hot apple cider. It was a delicious treat, especially since we had a chilly start to the day! Thanks Aimie!

Busy week in pictures!

This week was super fun . . . and busy! We launched our student blogs (see earlier post), had a AAA presentation by Mr. Delorme, worked on IBL, had a bonus gym class, did some social studies, curled outside, and learned all about distributive properties for multiplication. Yesterday, all the Grade 5s had a bonus gym class for positive behaviours out on the playground "way-back-when" in November. The 2 classes played dodgeball - everyone was worn out by the end of the day!  :)

Student Blogs are up and running!

It has been one very exciting week in Room 31! I'm super pumped that our student blogs on Kidblog have officially been started!

We have worked extremely hard on creating our Paper Blogs, learning about gadgets and quality comments.

Please check out our student blogs and feel free to leave a comment, or two, by clicking HERE. Or you can also find the link in our gadgets on the left-hand side of our blog.

Thanks for supporting our journey into blogging!  :)

Day of Pink t-shirt orders!

Once again, Bird’s Hill School is participating in the Red Cross Day of Pink on April 8th, 2015.

It all started in 2007 when 2 high school students in Nova Scotia took a stand against bullying in their school. The students asked all of their peers to wear pink to school after they heard a male classmate had been bullied for wearing a pink shirt.

The Day of Pink campaign brings together schools and communities throughout Canada to wear the shirt and stand together against bullying. You can learn more about the Red Cross Day of Pink HERE.

Students and staff are invited to wear pink shirts in solidarity to show that bullying is unacceptable and to stand for respect.

All students are bringing home order forms today. The t-shirts are only $5 and forms are to be returned to school by January 27th.

Paper Blogs: Commenting

This afternoon, we practiced leaving quality comments on our paper blogs. We're trying to follow "CAP Comments":

C - Compliment or make a Connection
A - Ask a Question
P - Polite ending (sign your name)

It was so awesome to see the time everyone took in reading each and every blog around the classroom. And, then the thoughtfulness in the comments was just great! All the students loved reading the feedback from their peers. You could hear a pin drop in our class because everyone was so engaged in the activity!

I'm proud of you Grade 5s!    :)

Reading Takes Flight: Winnipeg Jets Contest

I received the best email today from the Jets Organization! Once again, the Winnipeg Jets are holding a contest to win the chance to have a player visit classrooms during February (aka: I LOVE to read month)! I have entered this contest before, with not much luck. However, this year is a bit different . . . we do not have to write a 200 word essay, instead we need to write the Top 5 reasons a player should visit our class. Something that is also new this year is that students can apply as well! I'm encouraging everyone in Room 31 to enter the contest so that we have LOTS of chances!

Click HERE to be directed to the contest link.

I'm crossing my fingers that 2015 is the lucky year!  :)

First TWAS of 2015!

Matt & his paper blog!
This was a cold week of indoor recess added with the first T.W.A.S of 2015.

On Monday we started the day with a 3-2-1 holiday share. You needed to tell 3 fun facts, two things we will miss and one thing that you were surprised about. My three fun facts about the holidays are that I got a new mini stick and another one is that I got a blanket that heats up when you plug it in. Two things I will miss is staying up late and sleeping in. The thing that I am surprised about is that my I pad broke over the holidays and now I am really sad.

Another thing we did on Monday is that we had gym and for warm up was maybe one of the worst games in the whole world. How you play the game is you are holding hands with someone and you are trying to tag people to hook on to your blob and if you tag two more people which would make you a blob of four you spilt into two and at the end of the game whoever added the most people on to their blob are the winners.

Fireworks Art!
On Tuesday was kind of boring but when we did the paper blog that was one of the best parts of the day. If you don’t know what a paper blog is well it like a preparation for your real blog. I can’t wait till we get our own blog because we will be putting our own T.W.A.S and our own art. We are going to be putting our own pictures but it has to be approved by Miss. Wasney.

Another thing we did is we had gym and we did that dumb blob tag again that was supposed to be just for warm up but turned out to be blob tag the whole gym class.

One more things we did on Tuesday was music but know we have three music classes a week instead one because we have to learn a few Orff songs so we can perform in front of people. I think that music is one of the worst subjects in school history.

No one solved WWW!
On Wednesday we did more of our paper blog again. We are almost done our paper blogs but we still need to do a bit more work. We did some math and we did a bit of marking. We marked our 100 question page that was multiplication and I got 9 wrong and 91 right. We had French and learned the days of the week.

On Thursday we had gym and we played a pretty fun game. The gym teacher put a ball in and whatever ball he put in you would grab the stick like if he put in a hockey ball you would pick up a hockey stick. We started to make a math game and again we kept making paper blogs.

On Friday we finally changed spots because Sydney was gone for the first week of school. I am with Caeden. Jayden, Brady, and me. We are still going to make our paper blogs and more French and more paper blog for the fifth time this week and we have had French every day this week.

We played this at the end of the day on Friday!
Ms. Rand & Mr. Hargreaves have been hard at work!
We're crossing our fingers we can get out there next week!

Blogging in the new year!

At the beginning of every school year, teachers need to create a Professional Growth Plan . . . which is like a personal teaching goal to work towards. This year, mine is to have students working on their very own blogs! I'm pretty excited by this, because all of our students enjoy contributing to our class blog through posts and comments.

Mrs. Dent Scarcello suggested that I try a paper blog before launching the online one. This seemed like the perfect week to do it! It has been so much fun to see the students and their creativity. Some "techies" even included a QR code and the Instagram logo as one of their gadgets! So neat!

I'm looking forward to sharing our blogging journey with you! I will share the link once they're up and running!

2015 Fireworks!

This week, school is really fun so far because on Tuesday we did an art job called New Year’s Fireworks. We started off by making bubble (or block) numbers spelling 2015. Then we taped them onto a blue piece of paper. Then we used chalk pastel to make the firework effect (we used about two colors in every firework) then we took the numbers off the paper so it spelled 2015 in blue. Then we had the chance to write Happy New Year on the paper. I rate this art project 10\10 stars!

Welcome Back!

We had a great start to the new year in Room 31 today! We did 3-2-1 sharing about our holidays. Wow! Do we ever have some lucky kids in our class!

There were LOTS of us that will miss staying up late and sleeping in now that the holidays are over! Me included! Ha!

Wishing you and your families health, happiness, and FUN for 2015!

Happy New Year!

Well, we are definitely having a cold start to 2015! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break! Yesterday, I went to The Forks to check out the painted script on the skating rink by local artist Kal Barteski. I can't help but think that Room 31 should adopt "Read MORE books" as our New Years resolution!

I'm looking forward to hearing all about your adventures from the last 2 weeks. See you on Monday!
