Last week of 2017!

Wow! We've had a whirlwind of a week! Our Christmas Concert was last night, so that meant we had some practices through the week. We did Secret Santa - which was so fun, created cards for our families, and painted wood ornaments. Thank you to all the families for coming out to watch the concert. We had quite a few Room 31 students acting in the play and they did FANTASTIC! Today, we wore festive pjs and chilled out with a photobooth and a movie. Thanks to families for sending in delicious treats!

Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and I'm looking forward to hearing all about your adventures! See you on January 8th!

A Cinnamony Week!

We've been super busy this week! The stage was delivered on Tuesday and we have already had a few practices in the gym! And with the gym being used, phys ed classes are outside. Today, the students got to ski! We did a cute craft with our Kindergarten book buddies. Every child is creating a snowman tea light holder/candy dish. They turned out adorable, and all have different personalities! We also drew names for Secret Santa that starts on Monday!

Mrs. Tresoor and I have also been working with SPIN Club members before and after school to make tree ornaments to sell at the Christmas concerts next week. Room 31 smells delicious!  :)

It was also an emotional week, as a funeral was held for Mr. Hargreaves, who passed away last week. He was the head custodian of BHS for over 20 years. I already miss our chats and being teased by him. Did you know one year a student dressed up as him for Halloween?! He was a fixture at BHS and will be missed. Do you remember when he had to kiss a GOAT?!

Birch Trees in Winter: art project

Our latest art project was admired by all families during student-led conferences this week! We used tape to mask off the paper for the birch trees. Then, the sky was painted with liquid watercolours. Some students sprinkled salt to get a bit of texture. On the next day, the tape was removed and oil pastel was used to add the birch bark marks and shadow on each tree. Finally, students added snow with white acrylic paint, if they wanted.

Check out the video to see the process:

What a week!

We've had a fantastic 4-day week at school! We were busy preparing our portfolios for student-led conferences. On Tuesday, we recognized "Giving Tuesday", and wrote notes to classmates to brighten up their day. Yesterday was definitely a highlight of our year . . . we went to see Wonder! This was the best field trip ever! When we returned, students completed reflections and we had a great discussion about the similarities and differences between the novel and the movie. It was my third time seeing it . . . and my third time crying during it! Hahaha!

Thank you for coming out Thursday night and Friday morning to celebrate the first term of Grade 5 with your child. I'm a firm believer of: "the kid you are now, is the adult you will become". It was really great to share in our successes!

Have a great weekend!
