Instagram Challenge!

Thanks to Mrs. Dent Scarcello and Mrs. Tresoor, we are now signed up for an Instagram challenge! This was created by two teachers in the RETSD school division. For each day during the month of May, there is a word or phrase for a photo challenge. Participating classrooms need to take an Instagram photo that represents the word or phrase and hashtag it #eduphotoadaymay. The next day, we will look at all the Instagrams shared in the photo challenge for our writing inspiration! You can follow us on Instagram at: @mswasneysclass. Our account is private, so you will need to send us a request, and then wait for approval. Please look for the note sent home today, or you may check out a website for more information by clicking HERE. We are excited about this fun challenge and are already brainstorming some photo ideas for each topic!

Children's Orff Day!

Here is Mrs. Knoll, Ms. Allen, Alex,
Michael, Kyla, and Renee at the
Children's Orff Day.
On Friday (March 26th) we (Kyla, Michael, Alex and Renee) went to the Children’s Orff day activity. We had to be at school by 8:00 AM and we got a ride with Ms. Knoll. When we got there we saw Ms. Allen. We were part of the orange group there was a lot of other grade 5’s there, everyone had a recorder there and almost everybody was playing them! The first activity we did was the Orff session. We got to play a song about happiness because that was the theme and at the end we got to pick something that makes us happy and make a beat with it. It was really fun. My (Michael’s) favourite station was the one we did after that, it was the movement station. My (Kyla’s) favourite station was the one we got to learn a new song on recorder. It was fun for me but I also liked the other orff station were we learned to play a song on instruments. In movement we had a partner and my partner was Alex. We had to walk around and when the music stopped we had to be at the same spot we left.at our “recess” we got a cookie and milk in the morning then in the afternoon we got a cookie and juice, we went outside and it was really warm. The last session and the one we spent most time on was the song “Happiness” from Charlie Brown. It was the song we performed at the concert. At first the orange group did it alone and then everyone else joined in on the second time. We had a great time. And then a wasp chased Michael when we got back to school.

TWAS

Here is Nathan and Bird's Hill
Team B at the Handball
Tournament!
This week at school we went to the mini handball tournament we went to Bernie Wolf yesterday. We won every game but two. We lost one to the other Bird`s Hill team. It was a close game there was five goals on each team.  Five seconds on the clock, they hit the ball out and the ref said that we hit it out but we did not. From the sidelines they passed it and got a goal and the other team was done. We had spring pictures. It was a weird background. We are starting long division. It is really easy and fun. I did not get at first then a little later I got it, then it was fun. On Monday it was Earth Day and we did a writing job but I forget it. In S.S we were learning about the fur trade. It was pretty easy we just read in the text book and wrote down some facts. Today we had science we did wheels and axles we did an experiment to see if using a scooter makes it easier to move different things in our classroom. We did bus loop expectations. We acted things out and people in our class had to guess it. Yesterday, we had book buddies they came to our class this time.

Mini Handball Tournament

Today at 11:30 we got on the bus to go to the handball tournament. When we got there we split into our teams and talked about the transitioning. I was part of team A. I was part of team B. First we played against Lord Wolsely first. We won 6-4. First we watched their game then we played Lord Wolsely. We won 7-4. The second team we faced was Polson. We won 7-3. The second team we faced we won 8-4. Then we had a break. After that we played each other. It was a really close game. It was tied 6-6 but with 5 seconds Riley scored to make it 7-6. Then we played Polson we beat them 7-2. I scored 2 goals. We had a break while they played. We played Bernie Wolf and sadly lost 9-2. They were the only team that we lost to. We played the other Bernie Wolf team and we didn’t lose as bad as Michael’s team but we still lost L 7-4. Then after we got all our stuff ready and we left.

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day
Here is the shaving cream and paint.
It looked so cool!
Today is Earth Day! Last week we made an art for Earth Day. First Ms. Wasney sprayed shaving cream on a tray, and then put green and blue paint on the shaving cream. Then she mixed it together. Then she called people up to put a piece of paper on the shaving cream, pat it down then pull it off the tray, then we let it dry for 10 minutes and then we scraped the extra shaving cream off with a squeegee and let it dry overnight. The next day, we had a tracer of a circle, we put the tracer on the spot where we wanted it with a pencil. Next we cut the circle out. Then we made a red heart with a saying for Earth Day!  Today we had to do a page about Earth Day. The first question was what are 3 things you do that protect our Earth? One of mine was turn off the light when I don’t need it on. We had to do 4 questions. Then when we were done there was a word search with 40 words! But you could do 20. It was fun!

Spring Art: Field of Flowers

Over the last few weeks, we have been busy working on some Spring Art, modeled after artist and author Eric Carle. We made textured paintings using a variety of items (saran wrap, bubble wrap, popsicle sticks, and cardboard tubes). Then, we painted a background with blue watercolours. Finally, we made flowers and grass out of our textured paintings and created beautiful fields of flowers. Now, if only the snow would melt, then it would FEEL like Spring! You can check out this art on Artsonia . . . just click on the link on the right hand side of our blog!

TWAS

Yesterday we had our spring concert my favourite part was when I got to play the cow bell I would play it after Step Back Baby Step Back then I would hit is twice it was fun cause I had the easiest instrument. We had to do 2 shows: 1 at 2:00pm and at 6:30pm but we had to be at school by 6:10pm there were a lot of people there to see us at that time and at 2 there were not a whole lot compared to the 6:30 one but it was really fun. We also had 2 practices in the morning.

Today it is April 18 which means it is WE ARE SILENT CAMPAIGN. When we came in to the classroom there was not a peep! MS. Wasney told us on the SMARTboard what we had to do. The first thing we did was children’s rights where we had to talk about what we would do if we were them in that problem and we would have no clean water or no clean food and it would be really hard for them. Then we would have to cut a piece of paper off but it had writing on it and we would have to glue is on in our writers notebook and write how you would survive it how it would  be super hard for you and she said if you would want to do another one we were aloud do more until there was no more, then we could play a math game. Me Ryan.s, Nathan and Conner all played Farkle but we played a new round cause we had no room to write anymore and Conner joined in and it would not be fair to him cause we were in the thousands so we started a new game then it was recess.
Nicholas' Earth Day Art
Yesterday, we had art and in art we had to use shaving cream then Ms. Wasney put blue and green paint in it then she would call us over to do the art and we had to put a white piece of paper and rub it across, let it dry, then put it on a garbage bag. After 10 minutes, we had to scrape it off with a window wiper then we had to put it on the drying rack until the next day. Today we had art again and we had to cut out a circle and then cut out a heart and then we had to glue it on the earth and write a comment. My comment was I wish it was Earth day every day.
This week we had library gym and music and in library some people didn’t want to pick a book. We had our first basketball practice today but it was only the Grade 5 and 6 boys. We had music and in music we did LOTS of practices for the concert. It was fun. This week Michael presented his Expert Project on Monday. It was about tigers. My presentation is on basketball. I am doing it as a Prezi.

We are Silent Campaign

Today is the day where you stay silent for the whole day because we are standing up for Children’s Rights. Being Silent has been fun and awesome, it’s going good so far. Today we had to do a blue sheet it was called Children’s Rights. Then we got a pink sheet which had three scenarios then you had to read all the scenarios. Then chose one, cut it out, glue it into your writer’s notebook and write a detailed explanation to answer the questions and share your thoughts and feelings. I and Jack think it’s easy. Our card that we got for a $1.00 said “We are Silent”, Take A Stand and it also said 4 things that we were taking a stand for: 300 million Children under the age of five are living in areas affected by ARMED CONFLICT. One billion Children are deprived of one or more essential service. One in every three Children in developing countries is Malnourished suffering 160 days of illness each year. 58% of deaths in children under the age of five are caused by infectious diseases. This day of silence makes us feel lucky that we have things that other kids don’t.

Spring Concert: The Sounds of Jazz!

Today is our spring concert and we are so excited. We have been working so hard for the spring concert.
We had 4 performances and that’s just today. We had two this morning one in the afternoon and one tonight.
Tonight, the performance is at 6:30. This spring concert is called the Sounds of Jazz and we have two songs to sing “Lets Jam”, it’s a song all about Jamming. The other song is “Step Back Baby”, which is about when 24 robbers come knocking on a door but if you want to learn more about the song then listen carefully and you will know why the robbers should Step Back…
My favourite song is “Step Back Baby”. We have dancers for Step Back Baby and me, Maddy and Amanda are all dancers and a couple other people too and the rest of the people in our class are playing instruments.

There is also another song called “One potato” which is Mrs. Tressor’s classes’ song but some people from our class are dancing with them because they didn’t have enough people to dance.
By Brooklyn, Maddy and Amanda
Here is our class performing "Step Back Baby" . . .

And here is the Grade 5 Choir performing the final song of the concert, "Let's Jam" . . .

S.P.I.N. Club is recognized in local community newspaper!

Today, there was an article on the front page of "The Herald", featuring the S.P.I.N. Club! The Herald is a community newspaper that shares stories from the areas of East Kildonan, North Kildonan, Elmwood, Transcona, Bird's Hill, and East St. Paul. I think many families in our area receive this paper on Wednesdays, but in case you don't . . . you can find the link to the article by clicking HERE.

This was a very exciting way to start the day! It's just awesome to see kids helping other kids in such an important way! Way to go!  :)

TWAS

Over the last two weeks we have had 3 expert project presentations. Kyla was the first one to present and she studied red foxes, Ryan.S did his on Garfield and it was pretty good. Carly did hers on little penguins. It was interesting to learn that males have a hook on the end of its beak. I am doing mine on tigers and will be presenting it on Monday. I can’t wait to show all of the stuff I learned.

On Monday we had Amber Schuler come to BHS to talk about what free the children and me to we. It was both interesting and I felt sad seeing people being treated like they are rags. I found it hard to believe that you had to walk 2 km for dirty water. It would get extremely heavier.
Day of PINK!
On Wednesday it was day of pink. We had to make a badge, a bracelet and we made a poem. I was playing the bullied person and I had to write a poem about it. It was a fun activity.
For art we used different textures for a bunch of colours. After that we had to make a sky background. The final step was to make flowers out of them. They look so cool with all the different textures.
In math we are doing division. I learned how to do it while I was in grade 2 by my dad. I found it easy so now we are starting to do long division. It is a bit harder but I will get the hang of it.
We have been practicing for the spring concert lately. I do two songs. Step Back Baby and let’s jam. In Step Back Baby I am an instrument. It is an easy pattern but was hard to get the hang of at first. Let’s jam I have to dance and sing and I love the beat of the song.
Today the patrols went to wheelies for the morning. I had so much fun but it was only the second time I have ever went roller-skating. I wasn’t that good at first but I was doing well at the end. In science we have been doing simple machines. We learned about screws yesterday. I learned that a screw is a twisted inclined plane that holds things together. I also learned that a inclined plane helps spread out the work and it actually works. A wedge is something that holds things apart to rather than prying it open.
In gym we had to go to the music room due to the stage in the gym. We got to go on moon hoppers and we played triangle tag. One person would have to get the person across of them and the other two blocks the tagger. In music I have been practicing on the instruments. It is going to sound great and I know it. I can’t wait till the concert. In library I got to sit on the bean bag. I decided not to take out a book while I was there.
New attendance for April!
It has been a week full of activities.

Day of Pink

Today (April 10) is international day of pink. We celebrate it because in Nova Scotia there was a new kid in high school that got bullied by 2 other kids and 2 kids saw that he was getting bullied. The kids that saw it happen went to the store the next day and bought 50 pink shirts. All the boys took a shirt and that was the start of day of pink. We celebrated by making bracelets and badges. Conner’s bracelet has bullying with a no symbol. It also has say no to bullying, think pink and take a stand. Michael’s has a bunch of things about saying no to bullying like anti-bullying. On Conner’s badge he has things like say no to bullying, be a star, anti-bullying and stop bullying. On Michael’s badge he has a star that says be a star and don’t bully! For the big activity we had to draw what character we would have to play as. There was the bully, the bullied and the bystander. We were both part of the bullied group. We had to discuss what we were feeling and what our reasons were. We said that we were feeling sad and just wanted to cry in a corner. The reasons part is where we had to think of why we were getting bullied. We both thought of 4 things. Our reasons were we don’t look like everyone else. 2 was we have an accent and the third one was what they wore. The 4th one is that we were a different height. We made a poem after to talk about how we feel. It was cool walking in a bullied persons shoes but the character we played wasn’t happy. We learned a lot about bullying today.

Me to We Outreach Speaker visits BHS!

Here is the S.P.I.N. Club and Amber! (Amber is in the middle, wearing the green scarf.)
On Monday, a special guest came to B.H.S and her name was Amber Schuler. She came to our school because we raised a lot of money for Nicaragua. She came to talk to the grade 4’s 5’s and 6’s about Free the Children. If you don’t know what that means then we will tell you. It all started when a kid in Pakistan named Iqbal got bought for 600 rupees aka $16. His parents didn’t know that they sold him because they didn’t go to school so they couldn’t read the contract. So they signed the contract with their finger print. The people that wanted to buy Iqbal said that he was going to go to a good school. But they actually sold him to a carpet factory where he had to work for 6 years. L Then he escaped when he was 10 years old. Then he traveled around the world telling people about child labour. Then he went back to Pakistan to see his family then he rode his bike with his cousin to his uncle’s house. They were half way there when his cousin got shot in the arm and Iqbal was shot and he diedL. The next day Craig was looking for the comics and while he was looking he found an article and the headline was 12 Boy in Pakistan murdered! He read the article and when he was done reading it was time to go to school so he brought the article to school and asked his teacher if he could read it to the class. When he was done reading he asked if anyone wanted to join a club and gradually 11 of Craig’s friends put their hands up. Their club was called the 12 twelve year olds. But when one of them turned 13 they changed their name to free the Children and that is how free the Children started! And today only Craig is still in free the Children but a lot of other people started to join. It is so fun being in S.P.I.N club because we do so many things that are FUN and to Help other people!àJack Ryan.S

Village Groups

Last week we had village groups. My favourite (Kyla) was the scarf robbery; you chose 2 scarves and stuff them in your socks. The leaders choose 2 people that are it that start in the middle of the mats. Then the people on the end of the mats have to crawl across, you can’t get the scarves if you are not it. If you get both of the scarves stolen by the robber you are in the middle taking scarves. I was running across and just before they grabbed my scarf I turned around so they didn’t get it. While I was running someone was right behind me and stepped on my scarf. Everyone was going for me because I was the last one left so I stuck my foot on the mat and there was a ball of people that tackled my foot for the scarf. One of my (Carly) favourite stations were the Tongue-Sticker-Outer, its where one person is the detective and another person is the Tongue-Sticker-Outer. The detective has to find who is sticking their tongue out, if the person sticks their tongue at you, you have to “sleep”. We think the village group activity day was really fun!
