Thank you!

Just a quick thank you to families for coming out to student-led conferences! I always like this time of year because it's fun to celebrate the first term and all things we've done as a class community.

Students . . . you did a wonderful job sharing your portfolio and showing off our classroom. It is so neat to see your pride in where you spend your days!

Parents . . . thanks for supporting your child in their learning. It was nice meeting some of you for the first time!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend! Take time to enjoy the fresh snow!

TWAS in pictures . . . again!

With this being a 4 day week, it just seemed to FLY by! We found time to type out TWAS today, however we didn't get a chance to pick a student to share their work on the blog! Once again, we will share pictures from our Instagram account! Enjoy!

On Monday, we met with our Book Buddies for the very first time. We will be meeting with the Grade 2s from Mrs. Henry's class every Day 4 to read and do fun activities. It is so neat to see the Grade 5s be the "big buddies", when they once were the "little buddies". Ms. Koehn completed a writing activity called "Who am I" with the students . . . we're hoping the descriptive writing will "clue" parents in during student-led conferences!

Tuesday was filled with IBL, portfolio prep and we also visited the Scholastic Book Fair in the library . . . filled with so many great books, fun gadgets, and awesome posters!

On Wednesday, students continued working on their Term 1 Tribune, an art reflection, classroom clean-up, and did Word Work Wednesday . . . a hit in Room 31! Brrrr! It was a day of indoor recesses and indoor bussing . . . we played a fun snowflake game on the Smartboard!

Today, we worked hard on our research during IBL, practiced for the Christmas concert (which is sounding great), and shared our portfolios with one another.

I think the students will need to rest up over their long weekend!

TWAS in pictures!

Today was so busy that we didn't get a chance to do a typed TWAS . . . so we will share about our week through pictures from our Instagram account!

We continue to be busy with IBL with Mrs. Friesen for our research projects about a specific weather phenomenon of our choice. We had library with our new librarian and I read a hilarious book called, "The Book with no Pictures" . . . it really makes the reader say silly things - totally awesome to read out loud! On Wednesday, our student teacher, Ms. Koehn started her teaching block. We're excited to have her at school everyday until Christmas Break!

We started preparing our portfolios for student-led conferences. The students put great thought into writing reflection slips for their chosen work samples. We completed our amazing art - Cardinal Birds in Winter. We have received SO many compliments! Be sure to take a peek at them on Artsonia!

Yesterday, we had a snowmobile safety presentation in the gym. The students were very well behaved for the lengthy assembly! So today, they were surprised with "Movember" pencils! Also today, the patrols went to Wheelies and had a great time, plus it was the 2nd Hot Lunch of the year. We snuck in a quick winter art job at the end of our fantastic Friday!

Oh, and also this week, we learned an important lesson about the electric pencil sharpener! Ha!  :)

Cardinal Birds in Winter

In the past week our class has been making cardinal bird art. Step one of the art job was to use watercolor paints for the back ground and sprinkle the salt on if you wanted. Step two was brush the salt off if you had any and then for step three you need to draw with oil pastel your trees and the cardinal bird on a branch. Step four was to paint on the snowflakes and also do the little eyes and the beak for the cardinal bird.

I rate this art 5/5 stars. We’ve gotten lots of compliments for our artwork!

On Wednesday we had school finally. First thing we did was music lets skip that and go to word work Wednesday the word was kilometres  I don’t know why she picked that. Then we had health we made a recipe for a perfect friend we had to do like ½ ¼ ¾ and cup tablespoon and teaspoon and different things we like in a friend, like kindness, funny, nice.

On Thursday we had a volleyball tournament I don’t play volleyball so I wasn’t there. Then we had gym outside we played soccer baseball I like soccer baseball because its soccer with baseball our team lostL.

On Friday we had art we are making a winter like art were you paint the paper then you have the choice of putting salt on or not. Then we had math correcting I got everything correct I was happy whenever I got to go up and write on the smart board.

UNICEF Update!

I love having the opportunity to run the UNICEF campaign with my class each year. Even though it's a super busy time of the school year, it's just awesome to see kids helping kids! Thanks to Karley and Andrew for sharing what we did!

Over the last week of October our class has been running and raising money for a campaign called UNICEF. If you have not heard of UNICEF what you most likely have it is a campaign all over the world that helps kids in need. Our school raised $1201.50. Our class raised $84.00. Mrs. Dyck’s class made it completely off the graph! Some advertisements that we did was making posters and posting them all over the school, making announcements in morning announcements, speaking at an assembly, going to classes to collect their donations  and some people in the class got to count up the money.$$$ It was an awesome campaign and lots of fun to do. We wish we could do this again. #UNICEF IS AWESOME

SPIN Club update!

The SPIN Club has worked hard all October with 2 campaigns. All month long, we were collecting NEW socks for "Socktober". I was blown away that BHS donated 373 pairs of socks for families in need! After school today, I delivered all the socks to Nova House in Selkirk, which is part of the Manitoba Association of Women's Shelters. The socks will be distributed across the province! Wow!

Today, Winnipeg Harvest picked up 88.5 pounds of food that BHS donated as part of the "We Scare Hunger" campaign with Free the Children. At the Christmas Concerts in December, we are hoping to collect non-perishable food once again. As in previous years, the items collected are donated to Abundant Life Church so that hampers can be made for families in our area.

Thanks so much for your enthusiastic support of these campaigns . . . especially at such a busy time of the year!

TWAS in pictures!

We had a super busy first week of November! We started the week off with choosing new spots and making new name tags. We've been continuing our IBL project with Mrs. Friesen, worked on graphing and patterning in Math, did some Social Studies, and squeezed in some writing and an art job about Peace. It was a perfect activity to do this week to pair up with the assembly for Remembrance Day that took place this morning. Students shared what Peace meant to them and then displayed their thoughts on beautiful doves. We said goodbye to Miss Bannerman, our librarian, who is leaving BHS to work in a different library. We wrapped up the UNICEF campaign as well with a total of $1201.50 in donations! Wow! Thanks for your support!
