I LOVE to Read Month + Winnipeg JETS = awesome opportunity!

My dad shared this awesome opportunity with me  . . . the Winnipeg JETS have just launched a program called "Reading takes Flight" to celebrate I LOVE to Read Month! As a class, we need to write a 500 word essay explaining why our class deserves to be visited by a JETS player! Winning classrooms will have a player visit the classroom and read a book. There will also be an autograph session for the winning classroom! Woohoo!

The contest ends on February 6th, with the draw taking place on February 11th. You can read more about the contest by clicking HERE. We will work together to create the essay! Start thinking up some ideas on why our class should win!

This week at school we did Ability awareness. Different people came to or school to do stations the stations were mobility it is like going in a wheel chair it was really fun my partner was (Brandon.C) we started at the sign language station. I learned some new things here. The other grade 5’s in our group are Ty, Conner, Braden, Alex and I think that’s it. My favourite station was the Mobility station it was really fun! Me and my partner Brandon .C took turns on the wheel chairs. And I learned lots of different signs to speak in sign language.

Here is our brainstorming for our
Classroom Expectations.

In Book Buddies we helped them with their masks they are doing. The topic they are doing for their whole class is why the polar bear got his white fur.
In AAA we started doing our masks for the Pour Quoi Tale. Our topic is Why do owls stay up at night. My mask is the lynx. I used fabric, marbles for eyes, and paper for ears, and an egg carton for the nose. The three Narrators are Nathaniel Nick .M and Jack.
In the class we are doing are own classroom expectations so we decided on some rules for our classroom.

Here is Ryan during the Ability

The prize includes the opportunity to lead the JETS onto the ice at a home game, stand on the blue line during Oh Canada, a jersey and other neat merchandise, and 4 tickets to the game! And yes, if you win, please save a ticket for me! (Just kidding!) Be sure to have your parents help you enter the contest by clicking HERE.

Ability Awareness Day

Today, all students in Grades 4, 5, and 6 participated in Ability Awareness Day at BHS. We had several special guests in the school to coordinate 7 different stations to learn about visible and invisible abilities. The stations included activities for; fine motor, vision, learning disablities, cognition, mobility, speech & language, and hearing. It was a great morning for the students in Room 31! What was the most surprising thing you learned from the day?

Here is Michael using a
wheelchair to navigate
the hallway!
Today at school we did an ability awareness thing in the morning. We learned about people in our school with different abilities like Keaston, Austin or Jessica. We also learned about people we might also know that use sign language or have impaired vision. One of my favourite activities was the first station my group went to. That was the wheel chair part. We learned about how other people can walk and about how people travel places. Then we got to try for our self in a wheel chair. It was really hard going up ramps. There were some really cool stations today. I hope we could do something like this again.          By: Michael

Welcome Back!

Well, it's the end of the 2nd day of school, and I don't know if we're more tired today than we were yesterday! It was awesome to be back and to hear all about the wonderful holidays we enjoyed!

I was really excited that many families had purchased gifts from Artsonia with artwork created by Room 31 students! Wow, what amazing keepsakes!

Yesterday, we worked on New Year's Resolutions for home, school, and an activity. Then we made "crackers" to display one of our goals on a bulletin board. Here's a video of the process:

Today, we had a Show and Tell sharing session about the holidays. We all feel fortunate for the holiday break, lots of time spent with family and friends, and many generous gifts!
