Thank you for an AMAZING year!

Wow! Another year has just flown by! I want to thank all of the students and families of Room 5 for being so supportive and wonderful! At the beginning of the year, several of us were apprehensive of the combined class, but by the end of the year, many students don't want to leave! What I love best in our learning community is seeing those friendships develop! And the best part is that you can now hang out together at recess next year, instead of being on separate sides of the playground! Yay!

I hope you all have a fantastic summer! I look forward to hearing all about your adventures!

Ms. Wasney   :)

Terrific T-shirts!

A BIG thank you to Noah and his mom for bringing in t-shirts for EVERY student in our class to sign with special markers! It was the best surprise! Especially since several of us did this way-back-when in Kindergarten! What an awesome way to remember our fantastic year in Room 5!

Okay, I am such a photo-nerd, that I went into my files and found the KINDERGARTEN pictures of most of Room 5's current students! I can't believe how little you were! I think you look absolutely adorable in your grad shirts! Can you spot one another?!

A Fudgesicle Farewell!

Whoa! Someone's going to be STICKY!

I wanted to make sure that everyone had a chance to enjoy a Fudgesicle before the end of school, and today was Cole's last day, so it turned out that today was the day! It was hot, hot, hot out before lunch, so we had to eat them super fast!

Novel Study #2 Final Projects

This week, we wrapped up our 2nd novel study (aka: literature circle) final projects. We had 4 different books being read by groups of students . . . Math Rashes, Superdog, Kensuke's Kingdom, and The Fortress of Kaspir Snit. Again, to celebrate finishing the novel, students were given the choice of various projects to showcase their comprehension of the novel. This time around, we had the LOTS of dioramas, movie posters, board games, and 2 dramas: a talk show and a scene re-enactment. Here is a video of photos of the final projects:

Here is a video of Aidan, Branden, Emmy, and Renee sharing their talk show for the novel, Kensuke's Kingdom:

Activity Day + Hot Lunch + Popsicles + Amazing Weather = An AWESOME Day!

Today, the weather was perfect for our Activity Day! Thanks to the Phys Ed teachers, lots of parent volunteers (many from Room 5!), and the Grade 5 and 6 students, we had a super organized, fun-filled day! We had a yummy hot lunch . . . nothing beats a BBQ on a summer day, and polished off some popsicles just before heading home. Take a peek to see how busy we were:

A visit from a Furry Friend makes our day!

At the end of the day, Haley's mom brought Buddy, a nine year-old dog that belongs to Haley's neighbors. What a happy dog Buddy is! Several students were able to take him for a run and Buddy sure was eyeing up a wall ball . . . he even made a great catch!

Ms. Wasney's youngest student!

My sister and her husband had a baby boy, Tiago, about 2 months ago. He is the most adorable little guy I have ever seen! And, his "big brother" Wilton is so great with him!

Here's a picture of Tiago . . . getting ready for school! Yes, he may be a little young, but he's so cute and polite . . . just look at him raising his hand! Ha Ha Ha

Hmmmm, when do you think I can start teaching him how to print his name?!

Fun Father's Day Gifts!

Awwww! What nice things we think about our dads!
We have been busy making some fun things for Father's Day. I discovered a way to make "scratch tickets" on a neat site called pinterest. I decided this would be a super cool idea to incorporate into a card for Father's Day. So I made up some templates, the students brainstormed words to describe their dads, then wrote the words with a thin sharpie on the cards. One day during lunch, I went and got the papers laminated so that we could work our magic! We used a mixture of silver acrylic paint and dish soap to paint over our words so that the dads could scratch the paint off to reveal all the wonderful things their child thinks about them!

This week, the students had a surprise snack of canned peaches . . . we cleaned out the tins and made our own labels, then filled the tins with some candy and sealed up the bottom of the tins. This is the trick! Then, the dads can "pop the top" to enjoy the treats inside!

Science Design Projects!

These days, Room 5 has been a whirlwind of creativity! We have been really busy working on our final science design project of the year. The Grade 3s had to construct a stable bridge out of newspaper that was at least 30cm tall and 40cm long. The Grade 4s had to showcase the habitat of an animal of their choice. They needed to show the predator and prey, as well as the adaptations of their animal. I just love this total hands-on activity . . . even though it can get chaotic in the room! And I know the students enjoyed it too! Especially when I hear, "Ms. Wasney, if I'm in your class next year for Grade 4, I totally know what animal I'm going to do". What?! You're already planning for NEXT year?! Take a break! It's almost summer! Here's a video of the awesome finished products:

A dog visit a day . . . .

Have you ever heard the saying, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away"? Well, what does a dog visit a day keep away?! Today, we had our 4th furry friend visit for this week! Chelsea's dog, Davis, came by just before lunch. He was quite overwhelmed by all of us, so he was pretty shy!

Faith's faithful friend . . .

Today, at the end of the day, Faith's 8 year old dog, Lowkey, met us outside in the bright, hot sun. Mr. Hargreaves even provided some ice cold water for him, using a fancy punch bowl!

"Mini" Maggie's visit!

Today, at the end of the day, Renee's dog Maggie stopped by for a visit. She was definitely one of the smallest furry friends to visit Room 5 so far! Here are some cute pictures:

Field trip to the Children's Museum!

Today, we went to the Manitoba Children's Museum! We had an awesome time exploring the newly renovated museum! Then we took part in a program on structures. We had a recycling race, and then we worked in groups to build stable structures. Luke, our leader, even tested the structures with a leaf blower! It was so fun! A BIG thank you to Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Werner for joining us today! Please be sure to take a peek at the pictures . . .

. . . and here's the video of the leaf blower!

This week at school we did Novel Study. I’m Reading Math Rashes. We are on chapter 7. The other books were Kensuke’s kingdom, Superdog, and The fortress of Kasper Snit. Faith and Memphis are in my group. We also had 2 furry friends come to our classroom. Ms. Wasney’s dog Railay came on Tuesday. She kept trying to escape from the circle. Then  on Thursday Emmy’s dog Georgie came. Emmy fed her some treats. In science the grade 4’s are doing habitats and the grade 3’s are doing structures. We built straw bridges with 12 straws. We also built shapes with different kinds of materials. The materials were marshmallows, plasticene, paperclips, Popsicle sticks, straws, and spaghetti. The grade 4’s got to build stuff too! We have village groups today. We are doing a craft. It’s a spring gliff! In music Alyssa sang a song in front of the WHOLE class! The song was called Someone like you. She must have been nervous! We had 2 substitutes! They were Ms. Nowicki and Ms. Grywinski. In math we did division. It’s sort hard but it’s just like multiplication but backwards. In Writing we did a review on Railay, and for month-in-review.
