A 4-day week!

For a short week, we sure packed in lots of stuff! We made "thank you" cards for the volunteers with our Grade 2 Book Buddies on Tuesday. Thanks to Ms. Rand for arranging Hannah and Dale from the MB Badminton Association to visit BHS to run a clinic with the Grade 4s and 5s on Wednesday! On Thursday, the Grade 4s did a neat experiment to see if light travels in a straight line or not. The Grade 5s learned about the digestive system. The Grade 5s had the DARE program on Friday. Constable Human is always a hit when he visits Room 31!

We will be working on science design projects in the next few weeks . . . . so any donation of newspapers are greatly appreciated!

Here is Carter Grace's TWAS from her latest Kidblog post:

On Monday we had no school so I don't really remember what I did but I know for sure that I played with my puppy named Jackson!
On Tuesday we had the rooftop photo and it was pretty dark outside but we still did the photo, I am always looking forward to that time of year! Another thing we did on Tuesday is make get well cards for Katrina because she was really really sick, she wasn't at school for a WHOLE WEEK! But now she is back at school and she is feeling better!
Grade 4 light experiment!
On Wednesday we had mrs. Nowicki as a substitute teacher for the morning and we read how to steal a dog and OH MY GOSH WHAT AN ENDING I MEAN JUST WOW!
okay now we're moving on! Another thing we did on Wednesday is go to the computer lab and do a little survey about how we feel about math and after you were done you could do your expert project and what I found out about Dolly Parton is that her voice was in Gnomeo and Juliet!
DARE Program on Friday!
On Thursday we had math and we started division and I  didn't think it would be very fun but it actually was! Another thing we did was music and it was really fun because we used the drums again!
On today (Friday) we are doing twas right now and later today we are going to have library, I think I might get an amulet book but I am not completely sure.

Expert Project Presentations!

Today, we had 2 more expert project presentations! Now that students are presenting, others are feeling encouraged to finish up their research so that they too can showcase what they know!

Carter shared facts, showed a video and some models, and had us do a pop quiz on missiles. He also asked 2 classmates to assist him in the presentation, and even wrote them a script!

Rebecca used Prezi to showcase the snowmobile brand, "Ski-Doo". Her family races snowmobiles, so it was a perfect topic to research!

The Dog House Canteen!

Today was the grand opening of "The Dog House" Canteen! And it was a HUGE hit; complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony! (Way too cute!) The line up of customers was way down the hallway! I'm so proud of the initiative of some Grade 4 girls to re-open the canteen. The girls have decided that all proceeds will be donated to relief efforts for Fort McMurray. Wow! This is one of the reasons I love teaching . . . this day will be remembered by many and will inspire others to take a risk and try something new. I feel so lucky to be the teacher to help out with this venture!

Thank you to Carter Grace, Isabella, Kate, Katie, Livia, Mackenzie, and Rhyann for your dedication, organization, and of course, enthusiasm for taking this on!

We also started an art job this week in celebration of Manitoba's 146th birthday! We made cakes inspired by American artist Wayne Thiebaud. They look good enough to eat! Field Trip to the Manitoba Museum!

On Tuesday, May 10, we went to the Manitoba Museum for a field trip. The first place where we went was the planetarium. Our host’s name was Hilary. We saw a planetarium lightshow and learned different things about light. After that we got to make a kaleidoscope. To make a kaleidoscope you need to tape 3 mirrors together in a triangle and then you need to put the mirrors in a toilet paper roll (that is the same length as the mirrors) and tape them in (taping the sides). When you are done you can decorate it if you want to! After we made a kaleidoscope we went and ate lunch.

After lunch we had a whole hour in the science gallery. There are lots of very fun things to do. The mirror room was cool but it could have been bigger. The pulley chairs were great but we wish they were more like harnesses. We also liked the tornado made out of water, air. There was also a talk and listen machine. You talk into it and whoever is at the other side of the room can hear you. After the time in the science gallery we got on the bus and came back to school.

A "Wacky" TWAS!

30x30 on Wednesday
We had a fun week kicking off the 30x30 Nature Challenge, working on Mother's Day things, and ending the week with a school-wide wacky day. BHS students have been earning puppy paws for being safe, respectful, and responsible. The puppy paws have been posted along the hallways and we recently reached our 2nd bulldog. Our school looked pretty wacky today!

Here is Katrina's TWAS from her most recent Kidblog post:

Heeeeeeeeeey, guys! Guess what time it is, TWAS TIME!!!
Monday, Today it was the start of a new month (may) so you know what that means. New spots and name tags! I am sitting by My friend Max and also sitting by Xavier. Pretty good I guess! We also had a 30x30 challenge. (SO. MUCH. FUN.) And we did read to self. I read a book called amulet.
Tuesday. We had computer lab and I worked on my social study's because last month peaceful girl named Katrina was working on her social study's project an she was almost finished and then... BOOM! Her computer died on her and none of her work saved so she had to restart. Sad story. Right? Anyway, back to TWAS. We also had gym and we practiced badminton with balloons and then once we were ready, we could use birdy's.
Robert Andrews visit on Thursday!
Wednesday. Today we got to do a 30x30 challenge again and we did our mothers day envelopes and I sat beside Max and Carter grace and then she started making this weird Texas comedian voice and then I stated saying: "Well that's on Fleek"!!!! So yeah. We also had French, and, it was rough.
Thursday. We had a super cool thing that happened and it was called a Robert Andrews band presentation. They played music with... CHAIRS. CAN YOU BELEVE IT. ( okay maybe you can because you saw it) It was SUPER... DUPER... COOOOOOOL! I want to try that! We also had book buddies and we played out side the whole time! Thank you Ms. Wasney for letting us do the 30x30 challenge!
Friday. Wacky day! Today was Wacky day! I wore like, five billion braids and when I took my hair out and it was all curly. I also wore a cowboy hat. Awesome. And then for our 30x30 we did a word search and then we played on the play structure after.

30x30 with our Book Buddies

30x30 Nature Challenge

Last year, Room 31 participated in David Suzuki Foundation's "30x30 Nature Challenge", which encourages people of all ages to get outside and enjoy nature for an extra 30 minutes each day for the month of May! You can find out more about this challenge by clicking HERE.There are neat “daily tips” that can help you with some ideas for activities outside!

Day 1 - Read to Self
We will be participating in the challenge each day at school  . . . it might be simply taking our work outside of the classroom, getting active, or appreciating our surroundings. All Room 31 students are responsible for finding ways to be outside on the weekends!

Looking forward to a fun month of May, and hoping the weather cooperates!

Ms. Wasney  :)
