Thanks for a great year!

We had fun reading the memories
yesterday . . . almost 50 of them!

As I told you all today, you hold a special place in my heart because you were my first class of Grade 5s! Thanks for a fabulous year! We sure learned lots together and had SO much fun! Hope you have a fantastic summer! Ms. Wasney  :)

Mad Science!

Yesterday, we had a 1 hour demo from Mad Science as a thank you for using our classroom for the Mad Science Club this year.

Yesterday we had a Mad Science demo.  We had to create a solution to help Mr. Eggbert go into his home which is a flask. Dr. Wow took construction paper and lit it on fire and then she put it in the flask and then she put Mr. Eggbert on top of the flask and then the flame took out all the air out of the flask and then the egg slid into the flask.  Then she showed us how to put a knitting needle through a balloon! Dr. Wow put Vaseline on the knitting needle and then put it through the balloon and it never even popped!  After she called up a volunteer, she picked Maddy first, then Nat to try the balloon and knitting needle trick. After that, we each made our own silly putty. It was super neat.

Surprise Visitor to Room 31!

Today at about 11:30, Railay came in for a visit. Railay is a Bichon Shih Tzu. When Ms. Wasney’s Mom brought in Railay she was very excited and started running around the room in a very crazy way. Everyone started racing to pet her. Ms. Wasney tried to take pictures of Railay but then she would run away or look away. Ms. Wasney had to pick her up and go around the room so everyone could see her. At about 11:45 she had to leave. It was fun having her visit!

Expert Projects: Lions & Donkeys

Today, we had 2 expert project presentations . . . I think they are the last of the year! It was so fun to see the students engaged in these projects. They really were enthusiastic to study a topic of their own choice!

Nick showed his powerpoint, so here are some facts that he shared:

Facts about lions!
A lion can eat up to 60 pounds of meat at 1 sitting!
A lion can run up to 36 mph!
A lion weighs 330-550 pounds!
A female lion does most of the hunting!
A cub is born at 2-4 pounds and is only a few inches tall!

And Connor shared a Prezi, so here it is . . .

Talent Showcase!

Today in Choir, the Grade 5s were invited to share a musical talent. Students who take music lessons outside of school were encouraged to do a short performance to share their special skills. Reagan was one of 3 girls willing to showcase her musical talent. Here is a video . . . .

TWAS

I have been bugging Kyla to do her TWAS on the blog ALL year . . . and finally, she agreed! Here's the last TWAS of Grade 5 . . . .

This week at school we got to have field day, it was really fun! I was partners with Carly and Hunter. I had to do face painting at 10:30-10:45, there was a lot of people at face painting so I had to work a little bit later than I was supposed to.  There was 4 people working at a time and I don’t think that was enough because there was ALOT of kids there. Everyone wanted tigers and no one knew how to do them so everyone told them to go to me. After I was finished my shift I got to fit in about 13 games or so. Then it was lunch. Sadie’s mom brought popsicles for everyone (mainly the grade 5’s) I got an orange creamsicle and same with Carly. There was ice left over in the cooler so everyone who had ice agreed to have an ice fight! It was really fun people would chase each other than put some ice down other peoples backs it was hilarious and fun and everyone was ok with it!
Later on today we have village groups. I know we are doing something with books but I’m not too sure of the activity, and that’s all I really know so I can’t type much more for this subject.
We had our last French class on Monday I was happy and sad about that. I will miss Mrs.Daraska teaching French a bit. We might have another French class on Tuesday though so that’s good!
Bowling with the patrols and
peacemakers!
On Monday for spirit week we had to dress black and white I participated almost everyone did but some people didn’t, Tuesday was cowgirl/ farmer day (I just put cowgirl because I am not a guy but guys could dress like cowboys). I participated in that too everyone did except for 3 people (the party poopers), on Wednesday it was wacky hair day I did it but I just coloured a strip of my hair pink and put it in a pony tail (because it was field day that day). On Thursday it was super hero day. I didn’t participate because patrols and peacemakers went to wheelies and it would be awkward bowling like a super hero!   On Friday it was rainbow reading day and we had to wear blue.
Carly and Kyla with their
very fashionable hat!
We did our science design project and I brought more than enough newspaper and some even went in the recycling. Carly was my partner for the science design and we decided to make a sun hat. We originally had 2 choices 1 for girls or 1 for boys then Ms.Wasney told us to pick just 1. We picked the girls one but when we finished it looked like a combination of both. It was really good and when we tested it worked and shaded down to just about the bottom of our chests.
In math we started doing decimals. I don’t totally get them because I had about 3 minutes to learn them (since I was at bowling).  I also missed social studies because I am a peace maker and I was at training. We started our Term 3 Tribune. We are going to be doing the comic life poster but I haven’t started yet (I was at bowling) I am going to do it when I finish this TWAS so I better hurry.
In health we finished the video on puberty and it was suuuuuppppeeeerrrr weird!  We also got mini diagramsL it was pretty scary!
By: Kyla J
Hope you enjoyed my last TWAS!!
Joke of the day!
Q: what do you get when you cross a mouth with a tornado?
A: a tongue twister!

Field Day!

Memphis’s point of view-
My favourite station was the water balloon station. Me, Reagan, and Faith were partners.
We passed the water balloon around in a triangle and it broke and splashed all over Faith! Me and Reagan ran the “Scoop It” station. We had lots of customers. This field day was SUPER FUNJ!
Maddy’s point of View-
My favourite station was water balloon station. Brooklyn and I were partners. We passed the water balloon to each other and it popped on me (Maddy). Brooklyn and I ran the “Soft Ball Throw”.J
Reagan’s Point of View-
So… my favourite part of field day was running the station with Memmy and being next to Renee and Faith. I, as you already know, ran the Scoop it station.
My favourite station however was the juice station, but since it wasn’t an activity, my favourite one other than that was Water Relay, cause I got wet. We saved our cups so we could have 3 instead of two, which was totally worth it.

Science Design Projects!

The science design project was to build something to keep someone shaded from the sun. The problem was that two kids have allergies to sunscreen, so we needed to make some sort of protection for them that was effective AND attractive! Kyla and I were partners, we drew two hats but we could only use one. So we mixed both hats in one! The next day we had to build the project out of newspaper and masking tape. It took a while to build. If you were done you would go outside to test if it did really work! Ours did, but it didn’t really cover our legs. When we got inside we had to finish our log books.

S.P.I.N. Club update!

We received some special mail from the Free the Children Foundation today . . . it was a box with a letter, certificate, and framed picture. The letter and certificate recognized the S.P.I.N. Club for all our contributions to the campaigns throughout the year. The framed picture was of students in Nicaragua that our money is helping! The picture is also filled with kind messages from people at Free the Children to the staff and students at BHS. What a great way to end the week! Mrs. Tresoor and I are so happy to be working with such great kids! Way to go!

TWAS

This week at school we had a field trip to Lower Fort Garry on Monday. My favourite part was getting to see the big house and getting to learn all about everyone who lives in the big house. It is sort of like the white house in the United States of America. It’s really cool.  This week the last group for IBL has left and they are the integumentary system. They are working with Mrs. Dent Scarcello; the circulatory group (me, Conner and Ryan.S from our class and from the other class it is Cameron, Alex and Keaston form the other class) has finished their paper slide video.  Today we had science and in science we have a science Review and QuizL.  This week we had math and in math we had to do a fraction pizza assessment. It was pretty fun.  This week we had the Instagram Challenge and we had to do the same as usual we have to make poems but they are harder than they look like.
Nathaniel and Nicholas are painting
the backgrounds for their Father's
Day cards.
This week we have started our Father’s Day art: first we had to do our comic life. Then we had to paint a background for the Father’s Day card. It was really fun and after we paint with watercolours and silhouette scene of something we do with our dads and for my painting colours you can pick to have warm colours or cool colours. I picked cool colours and those cool colours are blue, pink and violot. It was really fun.
This week we had gym and in gym we are just playing games they are really fun. We have music in music we had our recorder test and Mrs. Knoll never had time to tell us our results. We had choir, we are just singing and she said that if we want we can ask her if we can sing a song but there can’t be any swears in the songs but we have to sing the songs at the 2 weeks left of school.  This week we had French, and in French we have to make a book that we made in the middle of the year. Now we have to do the same thing: make a book and this time it is about your favourite summer sports.  This week we had popsicles for not having any behaviour incidents for the whole entire month of MAY! WOOHOO! They were delicious!

Popsicles!

Popsicles
This week we got Popsicles because we got no blue slips in the month of May! There were Banana, Chocolate, Tropical and 3 colours! Conner got Chocolate and Ty got 3 colours. We are so lucky because Grade 5’s were the only ones that got recognized for their positive behaviour for May.

IBL Video: Circulatory System

Thanks to Mrs. Dent Scarcello for working with the Grade 5s during IBL to create paper slide videos of the systems of the Human Body. Here is the circulatory system . . . .

Lower Fort Garry Field Trip!

On Monday, after the announcements we went to Lower Fort Garry. We played a game called “liars game” when we got there. There were three people and each of them represented one group. The three groups were Aboriginal, European and Metis. There would be a photo and each of them would say why it is an invention from their group. At the end we all clapped for who we think was telling the truth. We guessed 2 right and 1 wrong. After that we went on a tour around the fort. One of best places to live in was the big house. It was sort of like the white house but in a fort. It is where all the upper class people lived. Mostly Europeans lived there but there were a few Metis people there too. Another cool place was the trading post. There was a bunch of soft fur to touch and we got to try carrying a 90 pound box of fur on our forehead. In the blacksmith shop, we watched a blacksmith apprentice make a tool out of metal. It was 2000 degrees ho!. He dipped it in ice water to cool it down. Then we got to touch it and it wasn’t hot. After that we had lunch. After lunch we went to do a build a fort activity. We split into two groups and made a mini house out of wood. Then we got to make a small Tepee. Michael went around and tied the wood together and Nick also put the rope on. Our field trip to Lower Fort Garry was really fun. We can’t believe it didn’t rain while we were there.

Thanks PAC!

A big thank you to PAC (Parent Advisory Council) for giving each teacher some money to purchase classroom items. Last Thursday, Mrs. Tresoor and I visited IKEA and went on a shopping spree! It was the perfect thing to do on a rainy evening! We each bought an awesome art cart, an adorable chair, and 3 colourful stools . . . which are the perfect addition to the Book Nooks in our room! Also, thank you for providing a Teacher Appreciation lunch, this past Monday. It was delicious, and a nice treat!

TWAS

This week at school we did some math. For the math job we did what Ms.Wasney called a fraction pizza. For that we had to do equivalent fractions. The trick to equivalent fractions is that the top number you always have to times by 2 and do the same with the bottom one.

Fraction Pizza - Yummy math!

This week 2 IBL subjects started their paper slide videos. The groups where Muscular and Circulatory system. The group that finished was the Muscular system. Right now the circulatory system kids are working on finishing theirs.

This week on Tuesday to be exact we had a water safety presentation to watch. It was all about how to stay safe around water. I learned that even if you think you are a very good swimmer you still shouldn’t go to the beach alone because everyone can drown even professionals can drown.
In Heath we watched some more of the video that we started a couple of weeks ago. And I have to say that it was the hardest one to go through without laughing. It had some interesting words that we don’t hear every day but we needed to learn about it sometime or another so it may as well be now.
This afternoon we are having book buddies! This time we are going to do an activity!  I have no idea what it is but I bet it will be REALLY fun! I cannot wait until this afternoon to see my book buddy!
This week some people for French have started something new because they are finished their restaurant skits. The new activity is where you would pick a sport like hockey then draw it so you would draw a hockey puck or a hockey stick something that is related in playing the game.
New attendance for June! YUM!
On Thursday we got… NEW SPOTS!!!!! Before I was sitting with Amanda, Memphis and Reagan and now I’m sitting with Amanda, Brooklyn and Zach! I would say in my opinion this has been the best seating plan though out the whole year! And the best attendance too! The attendance is Popsicles! You just tap your popsicle and it melts away! The best snack for warm weather!
This week we had 5 more people present their expert projects! Their names are… Amanda, Kyla, Michael, Carly and Nathan. Amanda’s was on horses, Kyla’s was on pink fairy armadillo’s, Michael’s was on bold eagles, Carly’s was on polar bears and Nathans was on martins.
The instagram challenge is back baby! And better than ever!  This time I get to do 2! Mine are funny and letters! For funny I asked everyone to write down some jokes and then I put in three of them and then I put it into a special app then I put lol! then that’s it we posted it and BOOM! Done! And for my other one I am going to do the letters on the wall of the alphabet!
This week we had all 4 subjects out of the class room. For gym we went outside to play baseball for the entire time I got at least 1 home run per time! It was really tiring! For music we practiced our recorder songs, the sailor and the water is wide. In choir we sang Firework by Katy Perry and for library we checked out books.

More Paper Slide Videos!

We've had 2 more groups film paper slide videos of body systems with Mrs. Dent Scarcello during IBL! Hope you enjoy them . . .

Art: Flower Sketches

We started our sketching art last week and we finished this on Friday, May 31stJ!
Step #1à the first step was to do a couple of sketches of flowers. I chose like a variety of 5.
Step #2à the second step was to get water colour paper and trace your flower on it.
Step #3à the third step is to trace it with overhead marker or washable black Crayola marker.
Step #4à the forth step is to get a paintbrush and water.
Step #5à then you brush the overhead marker with the paintbrush and water to make it smear.

Expert Projects: Polar Bears, Horses, and Pink Fairy Armadillos

We had 3 Expert Project presentations this morning! Whoa! Carly presented her third project!

Amanda presented a powerpoint about Horses. Here are some facts that Amanda shared: Old Billy was the oldest horse, he lived to be 62 years old! A male horse has 40 teeth and a female has 36 teeth. Ponies are not baby horses, they are actually a small full-grown horse!

Here is Kyla's fourth expert project . . .

Patrols of the Month!

Congratulations to Ty and Kyla who were recognized last week as Patrols of the Month for April and May! It's so nice to see the Grade 5s being responsible and caring for others at school. You will be excellent role models next year when you are the oldest at BHS! Way to go!
