UNICEF update!

This week, we've been busy making the rounds collecting UNICEF donations! As of today, we're up to $699.50. It's pretty awesome to see every classroom represented on the graph by the gym!

Thanks so much for supporting UNICEF . . . especially at a very busy time of the year with other fundraisers (Show & Save, Magazine Fundraiser, Socktober, and We Scare Hunger)!

Monday, November 2nd will be the FINAL day to bring in donations.

Thank you!  :)

Magnificent Moons and "Spooktacular" silhouettes . . . an awesome Halloween art job!

Last week we did our Halloween art. This is how we made it… First Ms. Wasney gave us a coffee filter and we folded it so it looked like a small ice cream cone. Then we used non washable markers to colour it so there were no white spaces. Then we used a spray bottle with no soap and sprayed it so there are no dry spots. Then we had to unfold it and peel it apart without ripping it. Then we put it on a blank piece of white paper to let it dry. Then we started to practice sketch out our Halloween themed design. Then the next day if we like our rough copy of it we had to fill it in with black sharpie. Then we had to retrace it on our coffee filter.

Happy Halloween!

TWAS . . . Goodbye tables, hello desks!

This week was amazing! On Monday we got new spots but instead of table groups we got desks. On the same day we had outdoor gym because of the election! We played 3 ball baseball with the other class. I didn’t keep score but I got 3 home runs!

On Tuesday I made a UNICEF poster. Did you know that pencils for a whole school costs only $ 24!? It’s also UNICEFS 60TH anniversary! I’m going to talk about UNICEF in the assembly next week!!!!!! After that I had science. Grade 5s learned about warm and cold fronts.

On Wednesday we had art. We did a halloweenie art project. We drew on folded up coffee filters and sprayed them with water. Then we squeezed them with paper and then unfolded them and they looked like a colourful moon! We had gym after that and we practiced volley ball. We practiced serves and bumps. I was pretty good!

On Thursday (which is today) we have gym.  I don’t know what we’re doing because we haven’t had it yet. After that we have recess but then we will finish our art. We’re supposed to make a shadow of something and I’m going to make a shadow of my Halloween costume. I hope it turns out good!

SPIN Club update!

I have been blown away that the community of BHS sent in 557 pairs of socks! Wow! That is 184 MORE pairs than last year! Stay tuned to find out where the socks will be donated!

Today, the SPIN Club met about our next campaign with Free the Children. We will be running "We Scare Hunger" again, and are collecting non-perishable food items to donate to Winnipeg Harvest.

The top ten food items that are in demand are: canned fish and poultry, canned fruits and veggies, canned stew, chill, and brown beans, peanut butter, baby food, whole grain pasta, rice, canned spaghetti sauce, cereal, and canned soup. We will be collecting until October 30th.

Thanks for supporting these fundraisers!

Pumpkin Decorating!

The BHS library is hosting a pumpkin decorating activity. Students are encouraged to decorate a pumpkin AT HOME and bring it to school to be displayed until October 30. You can use anything and everything to decorate your pumpkin, but you cannot carve it.

We're looking forward to everyone's "spooktacular" designs!

I shared this cute video of a squirrel "carving" a pumpkin with the class today:

A "Chill" TWAS!

We've had a whirlwind of a 4-day week! This week, TWAS will be shared in pictures from our Instagram account.

Monday was Thanksgiving, so I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend. I got together with family at my Auntie's cabin. It was a blustery day full of laughter, awesome food, and great company!

On Tuesday, we had our bus evacuation. Some grade 5s were lucky enough to help out with their patrolling expertise! We had a Morning Meeting; which is something new we're trying in Room 31! It gives us an opportunity to build our class community and allows us to feel like we've been heard. I introduced a "Chill Zone"; which is a cozy place for one student (at a time) to chill out and relax without distractions for a bit. Students are encouraged to bring their work, a book, or even a snack and enjoy the peacefulness! So far, it's a hit!  :) We also had Gym, completed a school-wide writing job, visited the library, and had French.

On Wednesday, we again had a Morning Meeting; 5 students desperately wanted to share something about their night before! We did the school-wide writing job again, read to self, and gym. We ended the beautiful day outside by playing "Instincts for Survival"; a tag game that has students as the role of carnivore, herbivore, or element. It's an awesome way to "sneak" in some of the Grade 4 Science curriculum! Ha!

Yesterday, we did math, social studies, read to self. We visited the gym and ended the day with French and a writing job. Sadly, it was notes of apology or courtesy in regards to some poor choices of behaviour happening lately.

Today, I was lucky enough to go to the Flag Football Tournament with Mrs. Rand and Mrs. Dyck and 37 Grade 4&5 players. The Room 31 students that did not attend were sent to 3 different classrooms for the majority of the day. The football players returned at PM recess, and then we had Music and visited our Grade 2 Book Buddies. We started an adorable art job with them! I'm excited to see how it turns out!

Have a great weekend!  :)

Happy Thanksgiving!

This week we did some writing about all the things were are thankful for. It was amazing what the students came up with! You can read their thoughts on the pumpkins we made, which are posted on Artsonia. We have this cute bulletin board up in our room:

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend! Take time to appreciate all that you are thankful for! Enjoy the fabulous weather!

SPIN Club update: SOCKTOBER!

We are up to 81 pairs of socks so far! Just a reminder that the SPIN Club is collecting NEW pairs of socks for adults and children to donate to families in need. Last year, we collected 373 pairs . . . and our goal is 400 this year! We have a bit of a ways to go!

We will be wrapping up this campaign by October 16th, as we have another campaign to run for the last 2 weeks of October! Stay tuned!  :)

A "Thankful" TWAS

Thanks Max! YUM!
The students worked in the computer lab for the first time on their TWAS on Thursday. I was away at an in-service and returned to school on Friday to find that several students eagerly completed their work with the substitute! I really wasn't sure how the typing would go! Ha! Laine is sharing her TWAS this week . . .

Word Work Wednesday
On Wednesday we played all around the world. It’s a game where the teacher says a math question and the first person to answer it wins and goes to another person. Also it was early dismissal and we got out at 3:10.

Fun Attendance!
On Thursday today in gym we played doge ball and there was another class in there so it was like war. And we are doing TWAS today.

Fall Leaves in the Wind . . . Amazing Art!

I absolutely LOVE fall! And I adore this art we did over the last 2 weeks, especially because each piece of art is totally unique. Students were asked to collect at least 5 non-crunchy leaves. We traced them onto watercolour paper, and carefully added the detail of the veins. Then, all the pencil lines were traced over with a Sharpie. Next, students used oil pastels to colour in their leaves, layering shades, if they wanted. Finally, the sky background was painted with liquid watercolours. You can see the art on Artsonia by clicking HERE. We've received loads of compliments from everyone that sees the art in the hallway!  :)

Check out the process of making this art by watching the video . . .

First TWAS of the year!

At the end of every week, the students will work on TWAS (This Week At School). Today, students were asked to choose 2 things from each day from the past week to write about. I think it's a great way for the students to share about all our classroom activities. Each week, a student will post their TWAS on our class blog. Eventually, students will be posting on their own blogs via Kidblog (details to be shared in the future). This week, Xavier is sharing his TWAS. He had double the work because he had to type out all of the writing from his Writer's Notebook!

Monday
Picture day
The class all got pictures and the class waited so long to get their picture.

READING STRATEGY
We were learning a strategy like go back to the period and read again. And like to sound it out.

We did flag football and skipping. We did skipping so we could test our health. For flag football we were throwing the football to a partner.
