TWAS

Ryan J and Zach and some
yummy cookies for the class!
Whew! We had 2 assemblies and a popcorn sale this week! Zach and Ryan J treated us to cookies . . . and we even managed to do a bit of work too! HAPPY SPRING BREAK EVERYONE! I can't wait to hear all about your time off from school!

Memphis, working on TWAS!
Did you know in French we are making little books about what we like and what we don’t like. You have a partner and you have 2 books your partner does a page in your book and you do a page in their book. Me and Reagan are partners.
In social studies we are doing mapping and we are learning about forts and which provinces they are in.
Did you know in science we watched a Bill Nye video about simple machines then we did a work job for it. You had to have at least 5 facts, and draw a picture. It was a good video.
An Easter craft with our
Book Buddies!
We had book buddies and we made a Easter craft. We have an egg and you put a duck or a chick in your egg. My book buddy’s egg was super good.
We had a gymnastics show and there were 4 girls from our class. They were Amanda, Carly, Brooklyn and Lindsay. It was really good.
We are making a board game for math. The game is called To the Moon and you get to colour the game too.
Word Work Activity . . .
how many words can you make?
We did word work and the longest words were lumberjacks and alphabetical.
We had gym, music, choir and library.
Today, we had a music assembly the whole school was there too we got to sing our 2 songs. And we watched the Grade 2/3 Choir and the Grade 6s play instruments.
On Wednesday, we had a popcorn sale and a bag of popcorn was $0.50 I got 2 bags. One was for my brother and one was for me. Did you know that today was our last day of school before spring break?! JJJJJJ
Thanks to Jack's mom for
emailing me a picture of the
winning team! Congrats guys!
Conner and Jack won the City Champs last night for hockey. They got a gold medal.

Gymnastics Club!

Lindsay, Amanda, and Brooklyn
showing off a handstand!
The gymnasts have been practicing routines, skills, and a warm up for the upcoming tumbling rally before school since January! The warm up is a song written and sung by Katy Perry called Firework and our creative routine is by One Direction called One Thing. Mrs. Ilchena made up the creative routine.
These are the skills that we learned they went by different levels. Level 1 forward roll tuck and you show teacher the skill and if its good them you get a check mark and then when you get the whole level 1 done then you move on to the next level of the skill. There are three levels for each skill.
There were also optional skills like the splits and a back handspring. They are really hard but Amanda can do them all easily. To do the optional skills, you have to stay in at certain recesses to be approved by Ms. Rand or Mrs. Ilchena.
Here is part of the creative routine,
shared during the assembly.
Today at school we showed the grade 1s, 2s and 3s our routine before the grade 4s, 5s and 6s. We only showed the grade 1s, 2s and 3s some of the skills and showed none of them to the grade 4s, 5s and 6s because there was no time so we only showed the routine and the warm up.
On Thursday we are going to the Kildonan East School Gym. The reason we are going to the school is to see where to go because we are going that evening for the real tumbling rally to perform for parents, grandparents, and the whole family.

European Explorer Projects

In February we had to research about a European explorer. We got to choose from Leif Eriksson, Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot), Herny Hudson, Jacques Cartier, Martin Forbisher, David Thompson, Giovanni Da Verrazano or you may pick our own (yes, there was no girl explorers back then)! Then, we had to research about our explorer! We had to research about date of birth, born in, years of exploration, intentions, his crew, route, hardships, end result, and teachings! Once we were done researching, we had to do a Prezi or PowerPoint. Most people did a Prezi but some did a PowerPoint! Jack did a Prezi and researched about Henry Hudson same with half of the class! Nick did a PowerPoint and researched about Jacques Cartier! It was fun making and presenting your project and fun watching other peoples presentation!

TWAS

Wow! It feels like we haven't worked on TWAS in ages! We have been really busy preparing our portfolios for student-led conferences this week!

This week we had ms.Malawski as a substitute because Ms.Wasney was in a wedding in Toronto for her friend Kristen. We had a really good time with Ms.Malawski we did a whole bunch of awesome stuff with her for one thing EVERYONE finished their Picasso Portraits that looked AMAZING!!!! By the way!!! Everyone was so happy that they got that done. We did 2 (two) super easy math jobs. Well for me they were easy because one of them was the multiplication double on double digits! I am sooooooo good at that kind, well at least I think I am at least. On the other side of the sheet was 1 digit by 3 digits a little hard because I wasn’t here when Ms.Wasney taught it to the class. The other math sheet was 2 by 2 digits and at the bottom of both sides was a math question like for example ``A bee has 6 legs how many legs do 234 bees have all together?`` it was easy for me.
This week everyone presented their European Explorer projects. I did Henry Hudson I chose Henry because I know about a Bay absolutely filled with water called the Hudson Bay so I knew that there had to be a connection with them. It turns out that the Hudson Bay is called the Hudson Bay because Henry, his son John and some crew members were thrown off the boat and never seen again. We had to choose either to do a power point or prezi. I chose prezi.
Picasso Portraits
This week we did 2 art projects are we are starting another one. The art projects were called Funky Spring Birds, Picasso Portraits and started Shamrock art.
This week is term two parent teacher conferences mine is right after school today. So that means it is time for another Classroom clean up at the end of the day and parent teacher’s means that report cards are out! I think I did really well on mine but that I could have done better.

This month Ms.Wasney had a great idea for switching spots on the Smart Board. It looks like this all of the tables in a bird’s eye view and just to make sure we know where the tables are that we pick (by dragging our name to the table we want to sit at) she also put where the windows are the smart board and door is.
AM Attendance
PM Attendance
This month like every month Ms.Wasney comes up with a new attendance on the smart board so that she doesn’t have to call out to see who is here and who is not she even added her name to the attendance so everyone could she if she is here today. There is one for the morning and one for the afternoon I like the afternoon one better because it has a sparkle rainbow on it!!! I LOVE rainbows they are so pretty.
Today we have BOOK BUDDIES!!!!!! And this week we are going to share each other’s portfolios!!! It’s going to be so cute to see the grade ones portfolios to see all of the work they have put into it.

Abstract Picasso Portraits

I was really excited for the students to work on this art! I admired it like crazy last year when Mrs. Tresoor and Mrs. Dent Scarcello did it with their Grade 5 students. The colours just pop! I think this art is AMAZING! Great job everyone!

Pablo Picasso was born on 25 October 1881 in Malaga, Spain. He died on April 8 in 1973, at the age of 91 in France. He made paintings, drawings, sculptures, printmaking and ceramics.
Picasso went through a blue period where everything he worked on was in a blue tint. This was because he was sad.
Then, he went through a rose period and all of his paintings were pinkish because he fell in LOVE!
He also created the style of cubism, which is very popular.
What we had to do to create a Picasso Portrait:
     1.   We had to draw a side profile face and then make another half face but looking at you out of black pastel.
2. We had to color in the face with any colors and press really hard so that you don’t see any white paper.
3. Then, make the hair, a neck and shoulders.
4. Colour in the background and add neat designs.
5. Next, you have to pick up a popsicle stick and scratch any design you want into the oil pastels.
6. The final step is to make the black lines darker.

Funky Spring Birds

Jack showing off his artwork.
Michael and his VERY
colourful bird!
Yesterday we made funky spring birds in the style of artist James Rizzi. With a black oil pastel we had to make a Homer Simpson head and then draw a v under the head. Then we drew a body, legs, eyes and wings. We watered the paper with a paintbrush and then painted with colourful water colours. Jack’s bird looks like it just finished a paintball tournament and he won the tournament. He accidently coloured his eyes though. Michael’s bird looks like he joined the rainbow army. It has a lot of bright colours everywhere. The paint leaked and made it camo. The colours looked vibrant because no matter what colours you put together they looked nice. We think that they all look great.

Going for Gold at the Winnipeg Music Festival!

Today, the Grade 4 & 5 Choir went to Westminister United Church to participate in the Winnipeg Music Festival. We sang 2 songs: "Over the Sea to Skye" and "The Old Carrion Crow". And we won GOLD! It was very nice to see so many parents come out to watch! Thank you for taking the time out of your day to come and listen to the wonderful songs!
