Funky umbrellas on a rainy day!

Well, we had a student complete their "Kidblog Homework" already! Thanks to Isabella for typing up a detailed list of instructions for our latest artwork!

Be sure to take a closer peek at the art on Artsonia! Check out the process that we used to create the art in the video below . . .

This week we started our Spring artwork! It was a girl/boy with its head under the umbrella so you do not have to draw the head.
This is how you make them.....
#1 Make a puddle and grass or just a puddle or just grass at the bottom.
#2 Use a tracer or do a free hand sketch in pencil.
#3 Draw the jacket. If you want pockets buttons or a zipper draw it on.(if you want it to be a girl curve the bottom of the jacket or if you want it to be a boy keep it straight.)
#4 Draw the handle of the umbrella and make the girl or boys hand hold it!
#5 Draw the legs or pants.
#6 draw the rubber boots.
#7 Use oil pastels and color it in.
#8 Trace it all with black oil pastels.
#9 Paint the back-ground blue.
I think this is my favorite art we have done all year! I think this art was pretty easy!

That's a wrap!

We said "That's a Wrap" to Term 2 today with jumping into Spring Break! We also wrapped up our week-long filmmaking session with "Artists in the School". Randy and Leigh-Anne from "Tooz a Crowd" were working with students in Grades 2 to 5 each day. The films will be showcased at the Arts Celebration evening on April 26th.

This week also found us working with the iPads for math, doing a fun writing prompt, researching for our social studies project, creating some awesome spring art, and we fit in gym and music too!

Today, we chilled out with a movie (or two!), and didn't get to the computer lab. Students have some Kidblog homework over Spring Break . . . they need to write about the new spring art OR share something about their week off from school! I'm looking forward to hearing about your adventures!

Have a fantastic Spring Break!  :)

Thanks families!

A BIG thank you to all the families for coming out to Student Led Conferences over the last 2 days to celebrate a fantastic second term! The best comment is hearing that the students love being in Room 31; and I heard that over and over! That just made my day!

I love this time of the year because it's so awesome to brag about the students to their families! I just can't believe we are heading into Term 3 . . . the remainder of the year is going to fly by!

A very musical week!

Kaitlyn earned a Silver at the music
festival for her piano piece!
On Monday we practiced our music performance. The songs we were working on were A Splash Of Blue and Shepherd`s Hey. We also worked on our portfolios. These are the only things we did on Monday. I also ate lunch. It was good. I can`t remember what I ate though.
On Tuesday we had music again. We practiced the exact same songs. We had gym. We played handball. I started at defense and ended at defence. But I never got to be goalie. We had read to self. I read a book. The book was called 5 Stages and it was written by Dylan.
Report cards went home on Monday!
On Wednesday we had another music practice. I learned my alto xylophone part and I polished my tube part. We also got to share our portfolios with our fellow classmates. I shared mine with Corbin and he shared his with me. We cleaned our classroom for parent teacher meetings, too.
On Thursday we went to the MUSIC FESTIVAL at Lakewood school. All that practicing finally paid off! We got GOLD. We also had computer lab and I wrote this. We also got ice cream sandwiches and Oreos. The Oreos were gold and I got a vanilla ice cream sandwich.
Term 2 Comic Life for portfolios!
Our Grade 2 Book Buddies
sharing their portfolios!
On Friday there was no school.

A Golden Music Festival!

On Thursday, March 17, we headed to Lakewood School in St. James to compete in the Music Festival. The students in our class and Mrs. Dyck's class have been working very hard for the last few months to get in tip-top shape! They performed "Shepherd's Hey" and "Splash of Blue" as an Orff ensemble, as well as with other instruments and even a movement piece! During the last 2 weeks we had practices almost everyday! But all of that hard work paid off! They were awarded with GOLD! Yay!

Here's Jack's write-up, from his Kidblog account:

Today we went to the music festival. We got gold! I was dancing with 9 other kids.
I was not nervous. Ms. Knoll gave us golden Oreos and Ms. Ross gave us ice Cream
Sandwiches! Yum!

Lucky Art!

Last week we made a picture of a shamrock but not just any picture a picture of a 3D shamrock that was as simple as pie to make.

Steps:
#1. Trace a shamrock.
#2. Draw a dot under it.
#3. Draw lines with a ruler from the shamrock to the dot.
#4. Colour the shamrock in with a marker with a shade of green.
#5. Shade in between the lines with a pencil crayon with a green that looks good with the other green.
#6. Trace the outline of the shamrock and the lines in black thin tip sharpie.
#7. Repeat steps if you want to make another shamrock on page but if you do another shamrock connect the lines to the first dot. Do not make a 2nd dot.
#8 You are done!

If you want to know why I named this post luck in art it's because it looked perfect when I finished. Now that's luck in art!

TWAS in pictures!

TWAS will be shared in pictures this week, as we didn't do a formal TWAS on Kidblog. Students were busy working on their Term 2 Comic Life for portfolios today. All the pictures below are from our Instagram account. You should follow us at . . .  @mswasneysclass

We've had a super busy week! Two students returned from trips and shared about their adventures. We did some math, shared our design projects, social studies research, and of course loads of gym and music classes. We are busy preparing for the music festival, so we've been having extra practices! We did a neat kindness activity; where the students brainstormed things to say to others at the end of a day. We posted all the speech bubbles on a bulletin board by an exit door - they look awesome!

Yesterday, the gymnasts showed the entire school their warm-up and creative routines. They've been practicing since January! We also shared our science design projects with Mrs. Dyck's Grade 5 class, and they showed us theirs. It's so cool that no two marble runs were the same!

Today was a busy day with library, gym, computer lab, hot lunch and an afternoon full of stations! Ms. Rand organized a Buddy Activity day, and the older students were the team leaders. It was nice to see Room 31 students stepping up and taking responsibility in our school. The stations were soooooooo much fun!

A non-Monday TWAS

The students were lucky to have a 4 day week to settle into March! Wow! This year is flying by! Some students designed seating plans, so we voted on them, and changed spots on Tuesday. We wrapped up the science design projects this week . . . which is good, because our classroom is super cluttered with all the creations! We had an interesting assembly about Kindness this week. It was pretty fun because we watched videos created by the teachers about non-examples and examples of everyday situations. We did an amazing art job on Friday. I was so impressed with how well everyone did with it!

Here's Dylan's TWAS, from his latest Kidblog post:

MONDAY- today there was no school so I went to my grandparent's house for the day and we stayed home and played cards.
TUESDAY- today we got new attendance spots and nametags and I'm siting with Aidan. Also we worked on our science design and now almost everyone is done.

SPIN Club fundraiser = success!

Students were super excited to receive the Colibri reusable snack bags today! The prints of the bags are so adorable! It was an amazing fundraiser put on by the SPIN Club. A total of 239 bags were ordered which equaled $2002! The best part is that 50% of the proceeds will be donated to "Free the Children"; with a focus on education in Nicaragua.

Thanks for supporting this fundraiser . . . and the environment!
