T.W.A.S àApril 27, 2012
In ELA this week we had so much doing we did are last poetry. You have to make up your own poem then what ever it’s about you would have to do it in the shape of the poem like I did a poem that was about a paw print it said some paw prints are small and some are big in the shape of a paw print. All of them were very creative the poem was called concrete poem. In math we did some multiplication booklets we are colouring these math board games to make them colourful and we did are first time of doing multiplication bingo I’m really happy we stared this week because it was really fun. In S.S we did backboards I didn’t start on my back board yet but I really hope that my back board turns out the way I want it to. I love the back boards  they worked so hard so I hope we can have some fun with them at the fare. We also got to do comic life we had to go on to Google type in your region or country go to images get some pictures that you like save them you go to comic life you drag your pictures in to some boxes comic life is where you get to play around with and stuff but with the net books it harder to do but still fun. On Tuesday we had a fire drill good thing it was nice out but we weren’t out for long properly it was the shortest time we been outside for a fire drill are class stayed outside intill recess. This week we had gym music and library what a busy week. On Wednesday the grad fours that were in hand ball had a tenement at dawn wood they were undefeated it was awesome and the other grad 4 class the kids that aren’t in hand ball came to are class because the teacher went with the hand ballers.

Concrete Poetry

Today, we had our final poetry lesson. It's one of my favourites because it really shows off the creativity of the students! A concrete poem has a special shape or design. The poems are written to display the shape of the topic or they can create a visual effect with the words. I was really impressed with all the fun ideas the students came up with! Way to go!

An idea + a handy dad = a very cool art rack!

My dad built this awesome drying rack for us! The students were very impressed with how perfect it turned out . . . measurements, screening, "invisible" nails, and a tidy paint job! It will be perfect for when we have messy art that needs a place to dry. In the past, I would just lay out the artwork across any available surface . . . so there would be stuff EVERYWHERE! All the counters would be covered! Now, our classroom will be a tidier place! We are all excited to try it out! I know this because I was bombarded with questions about when we're doing our next art job! Ha Ha Ha!

Another surprise guest to Room 5!

We had another surprise guest to our classroom just before hometime today. Bella, one of Ryan's 3 dogs, stopped by! She showed off some tricks for us and was so friendly! It was a great way to end the week . . . with puppy kisses! Hope you like the video!

This week we did poetry we did haiku poems. It was easy for me. We also started are times in math it was hard and easy for me.  In our region research I am done and now I just need my pictures and I can start my backboard. The grade fives and six’s put on a spring concert of a bunch of old songs from the old days. My favourite part was when Markus was M.C. Hammer. On Wednesday Mrs. Dent Scarcello brought her baby to see the class and our class gave the baby a present. In gym we  had the class outdoors it was fun.

Perfect Poetry!

I love working on the poetry unit with students every year because by the time we're nearing the end, so many students express how much they enjoy it! This week we learned about limericks and haiku poems. I have a shirt that I love to wear this time of the year. I like to think that if the students can understand the shirt, then I know that they understand haiku poetry!

Research, research, research!

I love this time of the year! We are very busy working on our Travel Fair projects. The Grade 3s are researching countries and the Grade 4s are researching a Manitoba region. This afternoon has been a whirlwind of activity . . . students typing, cutting, pasting, and creating! I can't wait to see the finished backboards, but love seeing the work progress every day! We will be having a "mini-folklorama" event where we will display our work for classes to see, and then our parents will be invited in after school to view the displays. This is always super fun . . . some students even bring in food to taste test!

TWAS

Yesterday, several students said that they weren't planning on coming to school today because it would be Friday the 13th! Luckily, everyone showed up for the day! Here's Aidan's TWAS . . .

TWAS APRIL 13 2012
This week at school we did a lot of ELA. One of the job is we did poetry. we did alphabet poems, 5w poems and lots of other stuff. In math we are doing multiplication and I think it is easy same as some other kids in my class. And renee’s bunny came in because it was easter the day before and the bunnys name was smokey and she was so cute. And we had internashanal pink day to support a kid in junior high that got beat up because he wore pink to school. And in art we did this cool art job that we made the earth out of paper towel and we used eye ball squriter and it was so weird to use one of those things. In gym we did a soccer thing out side and it was really fun and we got to have a game at the end of class. And in socal studies we are doing our research but some of the other kids are done already. And for music we went and watched the grade 5s do there spring concert and we joined the dances.

Earth Day Writing + Art = Great Reflections

With Earth Day approaching, we have been doing some writing and fun art. A BIG thank you to my mom for donating a bunch of fabric scraps and buttons to our classroom! We ended up making some beautiful flower art; which was a fun and creative way to reuse some items. You can see this artwork on Artsonia, by clicking HERE. Yesterday, we "painted" with food colouring and eyedroppers to make our very own earths! (It was so cute that the Grade 3s remembered doing a similar activity for colour mixing when I taught them in Kindergarten!) I was really impressed with the students' writing about how to reduce, reuse, and recycle everyday at home and at school. We made a class book of their reflections. We hope you enjoy the video about the Earth Day art we have created over the past week!

International Day of Pink!

Today, we all wore PINK with pride to take a stand against bullying. In 2007, a student in Nova Scotia was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. Two bystanders saw what was happening and then stopped the bullying. The next day, pink shirts were handed out for students to wear. Now, on the Day of Pink, people wear this colour to remind others that anyone can be bullied . . . but, if we stand together, we can make bullying stop. In our class, several students wore pink, plus we made wristbands to wear for the day.

Eagles + Poetry = Our 50th Blog Post!

This week, we have been watching the Decorah Eagles during part of our morning. They always seem to be feeding during this time, so we really get a great view of them! Recently, we started a poetry unit that has been lots of fun, and today, we learned about cinquain poems. Faith was inspired by the eagles today and wrote the following poem:

eagles
cute, fluffy
flying, sitting, standing
I love watching them!
birds

This post also marks our 50th for our blog! To celebrate, we are enjoying some monster cookies! YUM!

Beautifully Organized Book Bins!

Here we are sorting through the books!
During the last week of school before Spring Break, we spent almost a full day organizing our classroom library. It was a BIG job, but one that really needed to be done! The students went through the old book bins and decided on books to keep and books to donate. We then organized the books into Fiction and Non-Fiction and then into genres. I bought some snazzy new book bins and made up labels. We all think our classroom library looks WAY better now! Thanks for your hard work!

Ahhhhh, all organized and ready to read!
