Life Lessons

Over the last few days, Room 31 students wrote some life lessons that they've learned from their years in elementary school. I think these will continue on with them into Middle School and beyond! Enjoy!

Abbey - Well, the human body, because when I grow up I want to be someone that digs up dinosaurs.

Adam - To always listen to other people's thoughts.

Aimie - Carry kindness around the world by being nice.

Andrew - Don't be a hypocrite, always knock on doors, don't be mean to ugly people because they might look good when they grow up (Kindergarten). Your real friends will help you when you feel down (Grade 2). Impossible is nothing (Grade 5).

Angela - I've learned to never stop trying your best for what's right. I have been trying to do my best. I also learned that don't be a bully, be a friend instead. Be kind to people . . . treat others as how you would want to be treated.

Aria - keep your hands and feet to self. Be a friend, not a bully. If you have more friends, it's more fun.

Brett - Try hard, listen well, walk quietly, and have fun.

Caeden - Be true to yourself and be kind to everyone even if you don't know them.

Dobie - Always listen to what you're trying to learn because if you don't, you won't learn anything. Impossible doesn't mean anything to me because you never will want to give up.

Jaedan MV - Be nice. Keep your hands and feet to self. Walk quietly in the halls. Share!

Jayden C - Don't shout in the school.

Jason - Always walk with "marshmallow feet" when you're in the halls, or else the doors will close.

Jessica - I have learned to tell all my friends not to run in the hall or they will bump into my wheelchair and hurt themselves or me.

Karley - Marshmallow toes - walk silently in the halls. I learned it in Grade 1.

Leif - Marshmallow shoes - when you had to walk really soft.

Liam - Be respectful, responsible, and safe. Don't be a hypocrite.

Matthew M - Be kind and polite. Use manners. Don't be rude. Sharing is caring.

Matt P - Try not to step on kids toes because I know it can hurt and maybe break or fracture them.

Sydney - Include everybody so that they feel like they belong.

Tyler - Marshmallow toes - walk quietly in the hall.

Reflections of Grade 5

Today, we did a different type of TWAS . . . instead, the students wrote reflections about their year. Please be sure to check out the posts on Kidblog. There are so many great memories from Room 31! Here's Angela's . . .

This was the best year...well one of the best years i've had at school. Hmmmmmmm.....where should I start? I have an idea! I am going to first run through a few of my favourite things about our class.
Now, I might make mistakes with some of the things we did because I have a bad memory.
first of all....I LOVE ALL THE ART WE DID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This year, it felt like every few weeks we got a new awesome art job to do by Ms.Wasney. I like the art ideas she comes up with so much because they are all different than the one we did the week before. Not just that but also that they are all cool and stuff but also because they are have different challenges in them. One thing may be hard for someone, yet for another person that is just plain easy. So by the amount of art jobs we did this year (I'm guessing 12) I think everyone got a chance to do something that challenged ourselves. We didn't just do that plain old kind of art that is just drawing, we also did art like optical illusions and some with water colour paint and much more. I am not even going to run through all the art jobs we did but I will mention a few...The birthday cake art was cool, the optical illusion art was amazing, and the earth day art was also very awesome.
Now i'm going to talk about the SMART board. Now this was every ones favourite, for me, not just because of the attendances, but me, Abbey and Aria got to do something special on the SMART board that no one else got to do was...........................Here I will give you a hint.... :)  :)  :)  :)  :)  :)  :)  :)  :) X10000000000. If you did'nt get it, here is a quick run through. Everyone else was at home because of the grade 5 farewell earlier and the 3 of us got to doodle on the SMART board. It just started with Abbey drawing a snake coiled around a tree, and then I tried to draw a dragon, but it sadly failed. Then I tapped on the marker option choices and I picked the creative pen. I chose the happy face one and I tapped the sceen and I saw a :) staring at me. Then Abbey and Aria joined, after about five minutes the whole screen was covered in happy faces!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then we saved it as "Hi" but don't tell Ms.Wasney.
Now I'm going to share one of my favourite memories of school......
When me and Aria were milk selling on one of our very first days, I told Aria something funny and I didn't mean to but, She was drinking some juice and she sprayed it all over the room. It wasen't a pretty sight and luckily no one was there. We tried to clean it up, but I just kind of disappeared into thin air. It was weired, but I just had to bring up that funny moment.
Here are some of the things that will help me in the future......with some of my favourite sayings.
-Be kind to everyone, and everyone will be kind to you
-Give a man a fish, eats for a day. Teach a man how to fish, she eats for life
-Be a friend, not a bully
-Two cats are fighting, one is bad, one is good. which cat wins? the one you feed. (you have to think about this one to understand)
Now here are some of the things I am looking forward to Robert Andrews-
-Meet new friends
-Join band
-Go to the art club
-Learn new things
-Try new things
-Get to know a new school
-Much more
I hope you like my last TYAS (This Year At School)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)  :)  :)

Grade 5 Farewell!

Today, we had our Grade 5 Farewell! For the last few days, students have been busy working on their "Farewell Posters". I really love this end of the year activity. All of the Grade 5s are required to complete 5 lists to include on the posters. Then, they are each given a plain white poster board. The next part is all about personalizing the board! It's so neat to see how each student "jazzes" up their poster to showcase themselves with loads of creativity! What an awesome keepsake!

Students were totally excited for the Farewell ceremony that took place at 1:30 today. A BIG thank you to several students for helping with set-up in the morning, and clean-up this afternoon! The highlight was seeing everyone having classmates and teachers sign the shirts! See a video of the afternoon below!

Thank you to Mrs. Dent Scarcello for taking beautiful photos of each of the Grade 5s and creating a slideshow to share their memories of BHS.

Thank you to Jason for representing 5W as our valedictorian! Here is his speech:

My parents suggested that if I get nervous as I start my speech, to de-stress the moment, I should imagine all of you in your underwear . . . nice Happy Face boxers, Mr. Tustin!

Good afternoon friends and family, ladies and gentlemen, Mrs. Palamar, and the most excellent staff of teachers of Bird’s Hill School For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Jason Scott and I am honored to stand before you as class valedictorian for Ms. Wasney’s Grade 5 Class. I am proud to represent my fellow students and friends as we wrap up our time at Bird’s Hill School and move on to middle school.

As I began to think about what I was going to say today, I took a moment to look back at my kindergarten class picture. We’ve come a long way since back in the Fall of 2009! Mostly, we were strangers, meeting for the first time. We may have been shy, scared, perhaps had missing teeth and still had baby faces. Now, we are on the edge, the very edge of turning into teenagers!

In our last year, or class, Ms. Wasney’s class, had some good fun! Some of my classmates attended the WE Day concert. Our Christmas concert was a lot of fun and curling was the activity of the winter. The teachers got a lucky break our team, “Legends on Ice” (me, Brett Matt P, and Liam). A big shout out to Mr. Hargreaves for spending mornings and nights working on the rinks. The last event I’ll mention was our overnight stay at Camp Arnes! It was a lot of fun and I bet Mr. Anderson and Mr. Tustin still haven’t caught up on their sleep!

I’d like to now turn to the message I’d like to give my classmates. From an early age, not long after I started school at Bird’s Hill, a certain quote by Muhammad Ali has stayed with me and one I return to often:

“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who
find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to
explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a
fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare.
Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

27 years ago, in Winnipeg, a child was born. Who knew he would become a 3 time Stanley Cup winner. Will there be another Jonathan Toews within our classroom? Impossible is nothing.

28 years ago, again in Winnipeg, a child was born. Who knew she would end up playing for Canada in the Women’s World Cup! Desiree Scott is an inspiration to all young soccer players Impossible is nothing.

Of course, I chose athletes, but what will YOU aspire to be? A doctor, an artist, a teacher, a coach? How about a police officer, maybe an actress? But if you have any doubts, remember, Impossible is NOTHING.

I would like to recognize all the staff in the school. If we have successes in life, whether it’s throwing a ball right, singing the right note, speaking another language, learning about our country and its past, knowing what 20x5 is, or maybe just reading a good book, it’s because of our great start at a great school . . . Bird’s Hill.

I need to wrap things up now, I’m craving cake. Thanks to all my classmates for being there when others need them; that’s great friendship! Thanks to all the parents for putting up with all of us crazy kids. Bird’s Hill School . . . thanks for the memories, experiences, laughs and lessons.

I hope to see you all at Robert Andrews in the Fall. I hope you have a happy and safe summer! Thank you!

Science Design

I absolutely LOVE teaching science . . . especially when it's science design project time! This one was no exception! It's so cool to see the imagination and creativity of students. This one was a challenge - they could only use tape and newspaper to create a "sun protection system". Wow! We had lots of variety in the projects!

The students have shared their experience on our Kidblog account. Read their write-ups by clicking HERE. This is Matt's review of the project . . .

Well for the past few days our class has been working on an Awesome Science Project.

It was so fun to do and some of us had partners and I did have one and that was Brett. First we started with drawing out what we wanted to protect us from the sun. We decided that we were going to make a tent. At first our tent started of as a dome on the paper than we started to work on it. When we had a little bit done we thought that the dome would not stand so we change our idea to make the tent rectangular. When we had that idea done we started to do the rectangular tent. Oh a I forgot to tell you that we were only allowed to use Masking tape and newspaper. Brett and I started to do it and it took a long time to get the base done but when it was we double checked it to see if it was strong enough to hold the rest off the tent. We had to add one more thing and we were ready to start making the base for the walls. When we started that we said that there is no way we are going to finish on time so I worked on one side and Brett worked on the other. And by the way that made it go a lot faster.

When we were done the base for the walls we started on the roof. The roof was the hardest because we had to make sure it was nice and Strong but also really lite so it didn't bring the whole thing down. When we finally finished the top we got to started wrapping it with newspaper. That did not take that long but it took a bit. When we finally finished that we were done.

The next Day in the second period we got to go out and test them. Ours was pretty much destroyed because it barely fit out the door. We had to do a few touch ups and than we went in it and it did protect us from the sun. When Ms. Wasney took the picture it was time for the fun. And if you don't no what the fun is, well it was destroying it.

And that was the end of our science design. I rate this 5 out of 5 stars.

Activity Day!

Today we had Field Day it was awesome. One of the reasons why it was awesome was because in the morning we got to run station, which was really fun. A few of the stations were baseball throw and another one was hockey shootout. They both were awesome. And one of the wet ones was water balloon catch and if you squeeze it, you get wet a lot. And another one we did was one of our favourites and it is baseball hit. How you do that one is all you have is a sponge ball and a sponge bat and then you put the ball on a cone and you try and hit the ball. But Dobie and Liam did not want a cone so we got him to pitch to us. Then once I went I got the record but when Dobie went he had to get the record I hope they beat it. That was about it for the morning but there was more activities but it would take super long to finish.

Now the Afternoon…
After lunch we got to play the stations but some people got to run a station and who it was is Dobie, Liam and Andrew. But half way through we ditched Andrew and went to play stations. But we did not use cards they used balloons till a kid popped them. Each station Liam and Dobie did not leave till we got gold. But one of the stations was baseball throw and it was really hard. Because they were softballs not hardballs. But Dobie’s brother was running that station and we both asked him if he can give us gold for free but he didn’t let us which really sucked. And Dobie and I wanted a drink before the stations open and we got one and the cool thing is that we were supposed only get 3 drinks but we got 4. And the best station was the water ones we got soaked! My favourite one was the water balloons and I probably got the most wet at that station because Dobie whipped a water balloon at me and then I punched it then splashed so much water on me. One other station I really liked was a Frisbee game where you dumped water on your head. But the idea of the game is to get water on a Frisbee and dump it in to a bucket and at the end you dump it on to your head and you would get soaked. Another one of the water station was bobbing for balls and then at the end you get to dunk your head in the bucket of water. Then after me and Liam finished doing some stations I went back to help Andrew with the station but Liam didn’t he just went somewhere else. And after we were done field day we got to eat popsicles they were really good.

A very quick week!

This week at school went by fast before you new it it was already Friday but the typing wont go as fast.
Concrete Poetry
On Monday we changed new spots first thing in the morning. Its always fun changing new spots because you don't know who will pick to sit beside you. That's my favourite part I am now sitting beside Matthew, Jason and Dobie. I like it so far. Right after new spots we had gym and we were playing baseball until Mrs. Palamar went onto the P.A. and said the school was now in LOCKDOWN. Sure enough everybody ran to the girls change room oh and don't ask me why we have to go into the girls change room I don't no why the boys can't go int there own change room. In the afternoon we went to Robert Andrews just for a visit I can't wait to go there everything looks like a lot of fun. On the way back we walked back but on the way there we took a bus.
On Tuesday we had a science intro about our new design project made out of newspapers and masking tape. We need to make something that will protect us from the sun. Matthew and I are partners and we are making a tent I no sounds kind of complicated. At the end of the day we started typing about Camp Arnes and we all had to say a lot I think Ms. Wasney knew that they were gonna be like 2000 or 1000 words long. First we did a rough draft on loose leaf and they were like 10 pages long that's the most I've written in a long time. We all had to type them at the end too.
On Wednesday we started making our father's day art I hope dad doesn't read this just this part. The art is a mug with or dads  first initial with pointilism dots on it and they really look good I can't wait until he sees mine. Another thing we did  was build our science project a little bit. so far we just made the posts for the tent it will be pretty tough. Ican't wait to see what they will all look like when theyare all finished and done so we can test them outside and see how they do to keep the sun off our faces. I hope ours stays together.
On Thursday it was a pretty small class in the morning because there were lots of people missing and 4 people at the mini a thon. so there was like 8 people out of 20. We then started building our projects again but Matthew wasn't there because he was at his dads golf tournament. so I just built a few posts I don't think we will do our original design thought because I tried making one thing stand  and it didn't work out so good it just kept falling over with lots of newspapers stuck to it. So I think we will make a square base other than a round tent shape.
On Friday  we are just doing T.W.A.S right now. Then we are doing our science project I can't  can't wait finally assemble it. Then we will have our last library class then we won't be in the library anymore.

A fabulous time at Camp Arnes!

Wow! I had a blast at Camp Arnes, and I know all the Grade 5s did too! We were busy every single moment! A BIG thank you to Mr. Anderson, Mr. Tustin, and Mr. Krenz for joining us for the adventure. We really appreciated your help, expertise, and energy over the last few days! I am so pleased that the weather was amazing . . . especially after looking at not-so-nice forecasts before we left! We didn't have a single drop of rain! Yay!

It was really funny on Thursday morning when we all saw each other at school . . . everyone was sharing their "souveniers" from camp (which included: bumps, bruises, scratches, mosquito bites, and LOTS of stories).

Here are some favourite memories from everyone in Room 31. Please look for the students' camp writing up on Kidblog!

Abbey - My favourite memory was the pool, archery, and the walk on the lake! It was so beautiful on the lake. I wish we were still at camp!

Adam - My favourite memory is zip lining because it was the highest thing at camp!

Archery
Aimie - My favourite memory is zip lining, archery, challenge course - high ropes, and the walk to the lake. We saw a dead fish cut open.

Andrew - My favourite memory at Camp Arnes was when we went to the corrals. I found their baby kitten and I called it, and it came to me.

Angela - My favourite memory of Camp Arnes was the Instincts for Survival game. I was partners with Aria and we were omnivores and we both survived the great wilderness!

Ms. Wasney got really muddy!
Aria - My favourite part of camp was Instincts for Survival game. For some reason, it seemed like it was the Hunger Games! I was an omnivore and I survived the attack of the animals!

Brett - My favourite memory was the Instincts for Survival game. I was an omnivore.

Caeden - My favourite memory of Camp Arnes is when I went on the zip line because it was my first time on a zip line.
