TWAS

On Monday we had picture day. I had a green background. I wore a grey and a pink polka dot dress. I love having picture day. We also had library. I took out a book written by Jeff Probst. The book is called stranded. It is about these people who are stranded on an island. We also had gym. In gym we went outside and we played recess games. I played 4 square.

On Tuesday we had music. In music we played on the drums. We played alligator pie. It was easy. We also had writer’s workshop. We brainstormed about why do writers write, and where can we find writing. There was a lot of where we find writing. We also had Ms. Whitney as are substitute teacher in the afternoon. I love having Ms. Whitney as our substitute.

On Wednesday we did our first reading response. It was a new and different experience. I like doing reading responses. We also had word work. In word work we had to figure out the eleven letter word. None of us new it so Ms. Wasney told us we should write it in are agenda’s to stump our parents. Haley J and I were the only ones who came back to school the next day knowing what it was. The eleven letter word was lumberjacks. We also had the Terry Fox Run. I ran to five provinces. It was a very hot day outside on that day. Ms. Wasney also brought smile cookies for our class. Ms. Wasney is AWESOME!

On Thursday we had science. In science Ms. Wasney read us a book. It was cloudy with a chance of meatballs. We had a worksheet about it and we got to write our own stuff and then we got to draw are own type of weather made out of food. How awesome is that. We also had Ms. Whitney as are substitute teacher in the morning. That was awesome! We also had computer lab in computer lab we did All the right Type.

On Friday we did T.W.A.S. We did classroom expectations for a matrix. And we are having choir.

Writer's Workshop

Yesterday, we had an amazing brainstorming session during our Writer's Workshop! I was so impressed with the participation of all the students! I couldn't help but smile when one table group came up with the idea of record labels as a place where we can find writing! Just where exactly have they spotted those lately?!

On Tuesday we did Writer’s Workshop. We had to brainstorm about why writers write and where we can find writing. Each table group worked hard together. Our class got to share their ideas table group by table group. Some table groups shared just where they could find writing, while the others did both. When we were finished Ms. Wasney printed off all of the ideas on different wordles. One wordle for where we find writing, and one for why writers write. Then we glued them into our writing journals. We came up with 110 ideas for where we find writing. WOW! And for why writers write we came up with 29. In total we came up with 139 ideas altogether. We had a lot of ideas shared for the assignment, but while each table group were sharing, the others thought their ideas were awesome so they wanted to put them down. Each table group had a lot of fun doing this assignment. Ms. Wasney was happy with all the ideas we came up with too. We all hope to do another fun assignment like this again soon!!

International Dot Day

September 15th was International Dot Day, in recognition of the 10th anniversary of Peter H. Reynold's book, "The Dot". Mrs. Dent Scarcello shared some info with staff about various activities to do to celebrate the day . . . first challenging teachers to wear polka dots on Monday! We pretty much carried on the dot theme all week . . . working with a million dots in math and doing pointillism art, which was quite a challenge! A BIG thank you to Mrs. Tresoor for coordinating a fun math game and working with the Grade 5s on the Colar Mix App to create dots that came to life! Check out the video to see the dots totally jump off the page!

Here is Emmy and her Name Art.
This week at school… On Monday we had a second round of the first day of school! The reason why is because we used to be a 4/5 split but there was also a 3/4 split, But the other grade 3 class had 28 kids! So they decided they would have no split classes for the 2013-2014 school year! It was crazy!!!! We played a game called find someone who… likes to stay up all night at sleepovers was one of them! Another one was find someone who wishes they were taller. I got asked a lot!! On Monday it was dot day. We played a dot day math game. It is a game where you try to make a square. It’s kind of like connect the dots. We got treats from Emily and Haley. Emily brought us cookies because her birthday was on Monday! Haley brought jolly ranchers from her mom's wedding.

On Tuesday we did number of the day. Our number of the day was 113. Some of the things on the paper were tally the last 2 digits, count forward by 2’s and count backwards by 2’s. In French we learned to say how you doing. It wasn’t that fun because we learned it in grade 4! In science we did a kwl about weather. It stands for know, want to know and learned.

On Wednesday we did a schonell spelling test. The 100th word was accommodate. We did word work. We had to make words out of some letters. There was one big word with all the letters it was alphabetical. In music we did recorder work. We worked on a song called home by Phillip Phillips. It is a little tricky though. In writing we did a heart map. The heart map is where you write thing that are close to you and are not so close. The middle of the heart was things that you love. I was a peacemaker on Wednesday. My partner was Hannah. We had no problems.

On Thursday we had choir I was a super singer. A super singer is someone who sings really good in choir. We did handwriting. I finished I think I am really good at it. We had a basketball player who played in the university of Manitoba come to our school. His name is Mr.O. He is really nice. We did something called classroom expectations. I did two one of mine were speak kindly.

On Friday which is today we typed up TWAS in the computer lab. We are going to do something called a million dots in math. I don’t know what that is though. Today I found out I get to sing with the WSO. I am really excited. We are going to do art called pointillism. I am excited to do art!!

Spot the Name!

I absolutely LOVE watching students be creative, so Art is definitely one of my favourite things to teach! We created this beautiful name art using Sharpies, pencil crayons and markers. We made unique lines and patterns in the spaces between the letters of our name. Can you spot the name of the artist in each artwork?

Be sure to check out this artwork on Artsonia!

First Day Pics!

Sorry for the delay in posting our first day pictures! It's been pretty hectic this week . . . especially since we had our 2nd first day of school on Monday! Hope you enjoy the video!

Round 2 of the First Day of School!

Today we had a "do over" of the first day of school . . . and boy, did we have a busy day! With 9 new students moving in, we learned lots about one another, the classroom, and routines. Luckily, I had my "Room 31 Experts" around to help me with the discussions! We were even surprised with some treats from 2 classmates! At the end of the day, we managed to fit in some art! The works in progress are looking awesome and I can't wait to see the finished masterpieces!

Fudgecicle Farewell to the Grade 4s!

Well, this has been an emotional 2nd week of school! It came as a shock to staff, students, and parents to find out that BHS would no longer be having combined classes this year. I had a hard time breaking the news to the students of Room 31 on Wednesday! After just one week together, we had really created a wonderful classroom community. It was amazing to see friendships develop so quickly! I am crossing my fingers that I will once again get a chance to teach these awesome Grade 4 students . . . hopefully next year!

At the end of the day, the Grade 4s moved over their supplies to Ms. Dodds' classroom. I know they will have a spectacular year with her! As a result, we will be welcoming 9 new students to our class on Monday. It looks like we get a "do over" of the first day of school! I'm looking forward to teaching this crew, as several of the Grade 5s were my Kindergarteners way-back-when! It will be fun to see how much (or how little) their personalities have changed over the years!

See you on "Round 2 of the First Day of School"!

"I am . . ." Name Art!

Woohoo! We have completed our first art job of the year! AND, it's all up just in time for Open House tonight! This art was an awesome way to get to know one another!

First, students brainstormed adjectives to describe themselves. Then, we drew wavy lines on a paper and printed in the words or phrases . . . making sure to touch both the top and bottom of the lines. Next, we traced all the lines and words with a black Sharpie and erased the pencil marks. Finally, we coloured in each section with marker, trying our best to go in one direction. The art turned out beautiful! You can see our online art gallery on Artsonia by clicking HERE.

If you cannot see your art on Artsonia, you need to have your parents sign up! The permission forms are going home tonight. Parents can return the forms to me, or simply sign up online using the special passwords on the slips.

Week One: Done!

Well, we made it through the first week of school! Woohoo! We spent the last part of the day writing reviews of the first week in Room 31. Some students even wanted to take their unfinished writing home for the weekend! Are these kids great, or what?! I've had the pleasure of reading their reviews, and I think you'll enjoy reading some quotes!

"This is my first week at Bird's Hill School. For the past few days, it's been really different!" - Aliyah

Attendance on the SMARTBoard!
"We do attendance on the SMARTBoard, and every month it's a different picture. This month it's apples and you drag them with your finger and put them into a basket." - Alyssa

"When I walked in the class for the first time on the right, there was a SMARTBoard. On the left, there was our class pet. In the middle, there is a quilt that Ms. Wasney's mom made. And all over the classroom there were colourful bulletin boards. I could go on and on and on about what we have in our classroom but I better stop there." - Aria

Our class pet . . . he's VERY quiet!

"Did you know we have another teacher that teaches us French? Her name is Mrs. Daraska." - Brett

"We even have a class pet, but he doesn't talk or fly because he's not a real bird. But what's good is nobody has to feed it!" - Carter

"So, what do you want to know? First week of school . . . LOVED IT!" - Chelsea

"We learned that Book Nooks are special chairs, mats, and cushions. Sometimes you even get Ms. Wasney's chair. I got it once already!" - Cole
Book Nooks are a hit with 4/5W!

Welcome to Room 31!

Wow! We had a whirlwind of a day! It was so awesome to meet all the fantastic kids that make up "Grade 45"! Our class is pretty special . . . I taught almost all of the Grade 5s Kindergarten way-back-when, AND six of the Grade 5s were my Grade 3s when I taught 3/4W! Time flies!

I am really looking forward to our year together!     - Ms. Wasney :)
