SPIN Club fundraiser: reusable snack bags

The SPIN Club is running a fundraiser for the next few weeks. We are selling reusable snack bags made by Colibri; a Manitoba-based company. There are 3 sizes to choose from and 10 super fun fabrics!

The best part is that 50% of the sales are returned to the SPIN Club. All the proceeds will be donated to "Free the Children" in support of education in Nicaragua.

Thanks for supporting this fundraiser, and in turn
. . . the environment!

Frenergy!

Last week we did an art project in our class for the WSO! We were given the chance to create art that we made listening to the music that the orchestra will play in February. The song is called Frenergy, by Canadian composer; John Estacio. We think it sounds very good!

We painted what we heard while the music played. Some people painted 2, 3, or 4 paintings! We rate this art 5 out of 5.

By Jack and Mackenzie A

Pay special attention to the music of our video . . . it is "Frenergy" by John Estacio, the song we painted to! Look for movement and energy in each piece of art! Enjoy! You can check out our art on Artsonia! I dropped off all of the artwork at the WSO office today. Fingers crossed some pieces are picked to be featured in a slideshow during the concert!

A Dinorific TWAS!

Keeping busy during indoor recess!
This week was super busy, however, the week felt a little long with all the indoor recesses! We were kept busy with lots of fun things in AND outside our classroom . . . with gymnastics club and intramurals starting up!

One thing we started working on is our paper blogs. I was so impressed with the creativity of the students. Each student is naming their paper blog . . . some are using their names, some are using a hobby. It's so cute! The paper blogs are the first step as we venture into student blogging with "Kidblog". Soon, each student in our class will have an online forum to publish their work! More details will follow.

Today, our art was a complete success, as many students rated it 5 out of 5! We created paintings as we listened to "Frenegy" by John Estacio. That song will be played at the WSO when we go in February. Some of our art may even be featured in the concert! Some students were channeling their inner Jackson Pollock . . . paint splatters were EVERYWHERE! Ha!

On Monday we had music we started a new song for the music festival. We also had read to self. It was fun.

On Tuesday we had gym. We did gymnastics. We also had French.

On Wednesday we started our paper blog. It was fun. We also had early dismissal.

On Thursday we had laptops. We also had gym.

On Friday we will have art. We also had T.W.A.S.

Reading takes Flight!

Today, we entered in the "Reading Takes Flight" contest offered by the Winnipeg Jets. We brainstormed the top 5 reasons why a player should visit Room 31 during "I Love to Read Month" in February. Here's what we came up with:

- We're special - we held a JETS assembly when they made the playoffs and were even filmed by CTV!
- 17/23 of us always watch the games and LOVE watching you win!
- Our whole school supports the Jets . . . lots of us wear jerseys on game days!
- Our community (East St. Paul) REALLY supports hockey!
- We want to be inspired by hearing your journey to become NHL players!

I have entered this contest for the last few years, so we're crossing our fingers again! Last year, 13 classes were visited and quite a few were from our division! We have to wait until February to hear if we are one of the lucky classes!

You can increase our chances by filling out a ballot HERE.

Quotable Quotes!

This week, I added 2 new quotes in our room. I had a local artist, Kal Barteski, create a favourite quote of mine in her amazing script and vibrant colours. I just love it! I then found a cute "play on words" which I framed and placed in our classroom. The students noticed both right away!

It made me think of how I don't want the quotes just to become part of the wall, and get ignored! So today, students had to choose 3 quotes and explain what it meant to them, then give an example of the quote in action. It was super neat to see how mindful the students were! There were over 20 quotes to choose from posted along our walls! Whoa!

Here are their thoughts . . .

Aidan - Quote: "It's okay to not know, but it's not okay to not try." Meaning: To try my hardest!

Brogan - Quote: "Wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it. Right is right even if no one is doing it." Meaning: If something is wrong, then you don't have to do it just because your friends are.

Carter B - Quote: "No act of kindness however small is ever wasted." Meaning: Doing something kind is always worth it. The smallest thing can brighten up someone's day.

Carter Grace - Quote: "Can one good deed from an ordinary girl change the world?" Meaning: Anything is possible.

Corbin - Quote: "When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind." Meaning: Be kind to all even if they're not kind to you.

Donavan - Quote: "The time is always right to do what is right." Meaning: You can do the right thing.

Dylan - Quote: "Just be YOU." Meaning: Act and be yourself and don't follow other people.

Gina - Quote: "Your actions speak louder than your words." Meaning: Treating others with kindness.

Isabella - Quote: "Of all the things you wear today, your smile is most important." Meaning: Your smile will make someone's day.

Jace - Quote: "Do the right thing even if no one is looking." Meaning: Do the right thing and no one has to see you do it.

Jack - Quote: "Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference." Meaning: Come to school happy.

Kaitlyn J - Quote: "Just be YOU." Meaning: I can just be ME!

Kaity S - Quote: "When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind." Meaning: Being kind to everyone you see.

Katrina - Quote: "Today is where your book begins. The rest is still unwritten." Meaning: Write your future, live your life.

Keaston - Quote: "Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak, but also to sit down and listen." Meaning: Having courage to stand up in front of a crowd.

Laine - Quote: "The time is always right to do what is right." Meaning: It's always the right time to fix your wrongs.

Mackenzie A - Quote: "Can one good deed from an ordinary girl change the world?" Meaning: Everyone has a chance to do something amazing, even if it's tiny.

Max - Quote: "Just be YOU." Meaning: Be myself. Play my own role, not others'.

Xavier - Quote: "Your actions speak louder than your words." Meaning: Including others.

Happy New Year!

We've had a busy couple of days, getting into the groove of school again! It was so nice to hear about everyone's adventures over the Christmas break!

We worked on some awesome art to celebrate the start of 2016. Be sure to check it out on Artsonia!

Today we got to make New Year’s firework art. We made the art by making 2016 tracers and chalk pastel. First we made tracers with hard paper and then taped it onto our paper. After that we made lines with chalk pastels (short lines). Third some of us did extra fireworks because they felt like it. Fourth we peeled off the numbers and then some people outlined it with sharpie. And then we were done. WE REALLY LIKE IT WE RATED IT FIVE STARZZZZ!!!!
