We've had a busy, but emotional short week at school. Students enjoyed the day off on Monday while teachers were working on report cards all day.
On Tuesday, Room 31 kids LOVED having the entire morning to work on Science Design Projects . . . which have turned out fantastic! No two projects are the same! I love it! :) Hopefully we'll get a video up soon to share the entire process! Ms. Palamar visited our classroom with some sad news about the passing of Matt's dad. Our hearts go out to Matt and his family during this incredibly difficult time. Please see a note in your child's agenda (sent home today) regarding something that Room 31 wants to put together for Matt and his sisters.
On Wednesday, we had a school-wide assembly to wrap up "I LOVE to Read Month". It was super fun to listen to the "progressive stories" read aloud and really neat to have DEAR time in the gym with the entire school population! The students also had a "pop quiz" in Science . . . which I had warned them about the day before. Soooooo it wasn't really a pop quiz, was it?!
Yesterday was a low-key day . . . we created cards for Matt, played multiplication bingo, visited our Grade 2 Book Buddies, and worked hard during Music in preparation for the upcoming Music Festival. A few students attended the funeral for Matt's dad, as did I. It was a beautiful tribute. Some of you may know that I went to high school with Matt's parents, so I was really fortunate to have known Matt's dad, and be able to celebrate the amazing person he was!
Today was Hot Lunch - always a crowd pleaser! Ha! It was also "Dress like a Book Character day". Students worked on their European Explorer research as well.
And that was our week.
I'm appreciating that the days are getting longer, and looking forward to warmer weather! Do you think March will come in like a lion or a lamb?!
Thanks for being you.
- Ms. W :)

SPIN Club field trip to CMHR!
On
February 17th, the SPIN Club went on a field trip to the Canadian Museum
for Human Rights. We got a tour of half of the museum. The first thing we saw
was a huge room with a projector that projected onto the wall saying welcome in
different languages. We went on the elevator to get to different floors. There
was a glass window to see through and it went really high, and it was really
squishy in there. We went up to the Tower of Hope, and that was the highest
part of the building, and we could see great views of Winnipeg! We got to take
pictures of the parts of the museum we saw.
In one exhibit, there was a game that we played.
It was all about making positive choices and being an “upstander”. If on the
game it said swipe here, we would swipe with our hand because the projector was
sensitive to your shadow.
There were some ramps going down almost the
whole museum and it went really far. At the base of the museum, it was kind of
dark, but as we went up the elevators and the ramps it got brighter. Most of
the walls in the museum were made out of limestone that was really old. There
were over 1 000 glass panes on the outside of the museum.
We
didn’t get to see the entire museum, but we got to see most of it. There was a
rock stream that was beautiful; the water looked so fresh and clean. When you
looked up on the roof, you could see the snow on top of the glass.
This field trip was really neat. All the exhibits
and activities made us think about human rights and how we’re all the same and
deserve to be treated the same.

Thank you to Mrs. Dent Scarcello and Mrs. Dyck for joining us on this fantastic field trip! Thanks to Mrs. Tresoor for sharing her pictures so that I could include them in the video! Enjoy . . .

Caine's Arcade
It's that time of the year when the Grade 5s are busy with science design project! In Term 2, we focus on forces and motion and simple machines. This particular design project is my favourite of the whole year! Students have to use recyclable materials to create a marble run. The marble has to change directions, speeds, and come to a controlled stop. It's amazing what the students come up with! No 2 projects are ever the same!
This video is about an inspiring 9 year-old. I love sharing this with the students at this time of the year. May we all have an unstoppable imagination and never-ending determination like Caine! :)
TWAS - Spooky or Sweet? Friday the 13th and Valentine's Day Party!
On
Monday we had Staff vs Students curling! It was fun but it was only a couple
kids from our class that did it because they couldn’t pick everyone. I wasn’t
picked. WAAAAAA! We got to make posters though. It was fun. I forget what the
teams were for the students and staff. The staff won the game though and I
wanted them to win. I don’t know what else to say though because I wasn’t doing
anything.
On
Monday another thing we had was gym. We practiced for the Fit-a- Thon. That is
when you take turns running for 15 minutes with you other 2 partners. We just
practiced so it wasn’t the real thing. That is all we really did in gym.
On
Tuesday we had MB Hydro presentation for the entire grade 5’s. It is about what
not to do when you are around electricity. I am now scared of it because I never
knew there was so much to know and not do. We watched a video too in the
library. The guy who came to talk about
it had a diorama and when it showed something wrong the person in the thing
glowed red and made a big, loud……. BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!!! The first time he did it, it scared me. I
think I burst out of the roof. It was a good presentation and something to know
to be safe.
On
Tuesday another thing we had was science. We learned about kinetic and
potential energy. It was cool. We also watched a video. It was even COOLER! It
started with a gear rolling and then the gear bumped into a bigger gear and
then all the things kept hitting something and it carried on the energy to the
next object. It was a car commercial but it was AWESOME! It was for Honda.
On
Wednesday we had Fit-a- Thon. For real this time not a practice. I was with Ang
and Jaedan M. We ran 43 laps altogether. It was fun and tiring. I don’t like
doing it that much but we have too. That is kind of it….. for this day because
I told you everything.
On
Wednesday another thing we had was a guest reader from ENERGY 106! His name is
Frankie Hollywood. He read us ‘Yuck. A love story’ I never heard of the book
but it was good. He recorded all our voices and he said he was going to put it
on the radio and everyone can hear it. I never heard it though.
On
Thursday we had new spots! I’m with Ang, Karley and Sydney. I think this will
be a good table for me. I am happy at this table. I wish I could stay here for
ever!!! So now I don’t know what to write about this day now.
On
Thursday another thing we had was book buddies. It was fun because we played a
game that our class made. We played tic-tac-toe. I let Carly win basically
every time. Angela joined our group for a while. After a while we read. It was
fun but they don’t get to stay long. I wish they stayed longer.
On
Friday we had I mean we are going to have a VALENTINES PARTY!!!
YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!! I am not
sure what we are going to do for the party. I bet a movie. I will have to see
when we do.
On
Friday another thing we did was type TAWS! I mean TWAS!!!!!!! I have 593 words.
Not anymore. I have now 600 words!!!!
YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!!! YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!

The curling game of the year: Legends on Ice VS Staff
Well, it was the day many of us have been waiting for! The curling game of the year . . . at BHS, anyways! Ha! A team of Grade 4s versed a team of Staff (Mrs. Daraska, Mr. Hargreaves, Mrs. Henry, and Mrs. Knoll). And a team of Grade 5s (all from 5W . . . Dobie, Jason, Liam, and Matt P) versed Mrs. Dent Scarcello, Ms. Dodds, Mrs, Tresoor, and me! The ice was fast, the cheers were loud, and the enthusiasm was contagious!
Thanks to Mr. Hargreaves and Mrs. Rand for making and maintaining an amazing curling rink for all the students of BHS!
I have not curled since I was in elementary school, and it was with "jam pails"! I think I created a new technique . . . the penguin sprawl! Ha!
It was so much fun! Thanks for all the awesome signs, cheers, and high fives!

First TWAS of February!
Monday,
we had no school, I played all day long with my dogs. It was a lazy-like day
for me.
Tuesday,
Mr. Careless came from Robert Andrews’s school and he showed us the Clarinet,
tuba, and other instruments and I’m thinking about joining band because I think
the instruments were cool. We also had a mini curling tournament with the other
grade 5 class. And if you were on deck you could go outside and play on the
little kids play structure, if you weren’t on deck and you weren’t playing a
game you could go inside the gym and either watch a movie or play indoor
curling.
New attendance for February! |
Thursday,
we had gym and we played a game called Stinky Socks. It is where you wrestle
and try to steal their kid’s socks. We did an art reflection and I really liked
writing it because I really love my art piece… and I love to brag about it.

Textured Hearts
Once again we were Ms. Wasney’s guinea pigs for this art! This art
took one week to do. Our first step was
to take tissue paper and crumple it up and slowly and carefully glue it on
paper.
Step 2 Ms. Wasney called us up for painting four at a time while
the other kids would be reading to self. The most popular choice was orange and
blue for the background. Then once we were done we put them on the drying rack
and waited for the next step the next day.
Step 3, we had to trim some of the tissue paper off the sides,
then we took an oil pastel and started to colour with the pastels on the side. Since
the tissue paper was crumbled, the pastel colour looked like veins.
Step 4 was on the same
day as step 3 after we did step 3 we had to do step 4 was making a heart with
paint all of them Liam`s was a circle shape. And we put them on the drying rack
for the next day.
Step 5 was the finale step; we took a black pastel and out lined the heart. Then
with a white pastel we made a shine affect
by shading one side of the heart, and with a black pastel, shade the other side
to make a shadow.
Step 6 for this step all we had to was take a black pastel again
all we did was the border of the page
Liam rates this art as 4 and a half out of 5.
Jason rates this art 5 out of 5!
