Goodbye and Good Luck!

Whew . . . we made it! Thanks for a fantastic year Grade 5s! It was an emotional roller coaster of a week, with LOTS of tears today at the end of the day. I feel so lucky to have been your first and last teacher at BHS for many of you. You all hold a special place in my heart and I know the world has great things for you. Be sure to keep me posted on your life at R.A., and beyond! AND, you are welcome to volunteer in my classroom when you have the day off school!  :)

Have a fantastic summer! Remember to . . . be silly, be honest, be kind.

Today, we wrote down some life lessons we've learned from our years in elementary school. Enjoy!

Austin - There's nothing I can't do or accomplish as long as I have my buddies!
Brayden - Don't play tackle football in a schoolyard.
Carter - Don't bug my brother.
Chelsea - Don't let Alyssa eat ANY Skittles!
Cole - Don't hang around people who get in trouble because you will get in trouble.
Emily - Don't prank your sister. Don't wear socks when you play tag, because I slipped and hit my butt on the floor and it really hurt!
Emmy - Don't go across the monkey bars if you don't know how because I fell on my back and got the wind knocked out of me!
Gavin - When I was playing basketball, I wasn't looking at the ball, then I got hit in the head!
Hailey B - Never put your hands on the stairs when people are walking down.
Haley J - Don't honk your bike horn because Grade 2ers will get mad.
Hannah - Always wear good walking shoes when you know that you're going walking. Also, be careful with hammers . . . it's not a pretty scene when something goes WRONG!
Jayden - Be careful around lamps. My brother had to have surgery and get stitches in his eye!
Lucas - I was biking with my dad and I went in front of him and my tire hit his and he fell.
Madison - I learned that you should never give up because then you will never know how it ended up.
Taylor P - Never play around wooden chairs because you could fall. Never stand on a bucket to get a glass vase off the top shelf or they will all fall on you. Don't run in flip flops because you will trip and fall on your face. It would not be very fun.
Taylor T - Don't stand on a pail to get a vase on the top shelf.
Ted - Always keep things neat and tidy.
Trystin - Never get stitches ever again because I got a towel stained with blood.

If you would like to share a life lesson, leave one as a comment!  :)

Grade 5 Farewell!

Today, we had our Grade 5 Farewell. It was bittersweet; as these students were also my Kindergarteners! It was an excellent afternoon . . . full of visiting, pizza, lemonade, cake, and awesome t-shirts to sign! Congratulations to all of you for a fantastic year! Thank you to Alyssa for representing 5W as our class valedictorian. Here is her speech:

Hi, I’m Alyssa and I’m the valedictorian for Ms. Wasney’s Grade 5 class. I am here to talk to you about all of our opportunities and memories at Bird’s Hill School. There is a boy in our class named Austin. He means the whole world to my class and I. He has taught me to never give up when things get tough, he’s also taught me a lot of things about friendship and that it’s okay to be different. We were lucky to have the opportunities to work closely with Austin and to help him meet his goals. Our friend Hailey L is a one of a kind bundle of joy. She is always seen with a smile on her face even on a gloomy day! Hailey has been a very nice friend to all of us here in 5W. We are all looking forward to making many more new special memories with Hailey and Austin next year.

In Kindergarten, one of my favourite memories was walking to the East St. Paul fire hall and then getting stuck in the rain! In Grade 1, lots of us enjoyed being Hailey L’s buddy in Mrs. Grywinski’s class. In Grade 2, we all agree that having caterpillars in the classroom was amazing and so much fun to watch them grow and change into butterflies! When we were in Grade 3, we had a travel fair. Everyone got to choose a country to research. Then, we all made backboards with all of our facts and pictures. We even brought in food that went with our countries. We all loved that experience! I researched the country Italy. We also used marshmallows and toothpicks to learn about structures. It was fun to build  . . . . and to eat! The field trip to Stonewall Quarry in Grade 4 with Ms. Dodd’s class was the highlight of the year.

Did you know that some of us have had Ms. Wasney for 2 or 3 years?! For most of us, Ms. Wasney was our first teacher and now she is our last teacher at Bird’s Hill School. She has been the best teacher ever! We all really like her and her sneezes! She has the best sense of humour and is one of the best people at art. Some of us including me, had her in Kindergarten, Grade 3, and now in Grade 5!

This year, we even got to go to Lazer Runner and were surprised with ice cream cones at Skinner’s! It was the best field trip EVER!!!!

Over the years, we have all had opportunities to be in all sorts of different clubs, such as . . . chess club, WSO, MYRCA, SPIN Club, run clubs, gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, flag football, art, and many more! Thank you to Ms. Rand, Mrs. Ilchena, and all the other teachers that help with the sports clubs! Thank you to Mrs. Tresoor and Ms. Wasney for running the SPIN Club.

Each year, we have an Activity Day. Lots of us enjoyed playing at all the cool stations, and this year was the first year that we got to sign up for a station to run for the morning, then we got to participate in all the stations for the afternoon. Over the years, we have been lucky to have the opportunity to order hot lunch. Activity Day’s hot lunch is always a BBQ, and we even get to eat outside! Thanks to the very generous parent volunteers who arrange the monthly lunches for us!

The Patrols have got to go to Wheelies this year. We have all loved going there! The Peacemakers and the Patrols also recently went bowling. It was so much fun! Thank you to Mrs. Dyck for working with the Patrols and to Ms. Wasney for running the Peacemaker program.

In 2010, Mrs. Dehn came to Bird’s Hill to be our new principal. She has worked very hard to make our school one of the best places to learn and have lots of fun. She even took part in one of our Christmas concerts in the roll of Lady Dehn!

Each year, we have a Spirit Week and we get to do different things for each day. This year, Spirit Week was last week and we got to have backwards clothing and twin day, dress like book character or super hero day, neon clothing & crazy hair day, black & white clothing day, and Friday was jersey and hat day for our awesome activity day. All of us love participating in these fun-themed days!

On behalf of 5W, I would like to thank all the staff of Bird’s Hill for a fantastic final year at the school. We have many wonderful memories from our years here. We have learned so much! Thank you for giving us a start in our education!

I’d also like to thank all of our families for supporting us and helping us whenever we need it!

Activity Day!

Wow! Today was the last Activity Day and Hot Lunch at BHS EVER for the Grade 5s & 6s! It was nice to have family join us for lunch in Room 31. Thanks to all the parent volunteers that helped throughout the day. Somehow, Mother Nature held the rain off . . . and it sprinkled only at lunch! It was an awesome Friday!

Today was activity day! The grade 5s had to work a station in the morning. Haley was working at Water Polo and Madison was doing Tennis Keep Up. Our activities were outside and in the gym in the morning but right before lunch it started to rain, so we had to move everything inside. We had an awesome hot lunch! In the afternoon we got a chance to help work the face paint, but only if we wanted to. Haley signed up for face painting once and Madison signed up to do it twice. After we are done our shifts we can grab our score cards and go to an activity. Haley’s favourite activity was Basketball throw. Madison’s favourite activity was face painting and she got a cat. After activity day was finished, we got popsicles!!

Science Design Project!

We started a new project in science. You had to make a thing that looks attractive, protects you from the sun and withstand wind. You had to make it out of only two things: newspaper and masking tape. You also had to complete a log book about your design. We got to work in groups of two or three, or by yourself. I saw lots of creative ideas like some people made umbrellas, some people made tents, some people made hats. I think only one group made a castle. I made an umbrella and my partner was Carter. We finally got to test it outside.

Talent Showcase!

Wow! We have some amazingly talented students at BHS! Today, we were treated to 31 students performing their talents . . . and FIVE students were from Room 31!

Today we had a BHS talent show!! There were a lot of people in the show from grades 1-6. Most people played the piano but some did dance, gymnastics, and karate. From our class there was Jacqueline, Hannah, Emmy, Haley J, and I.  The talent show was so long that we had to go before recess and after recess. All of us played the piano but Jacqueline played the violin. Every so often they would call people up to get a prize for the spirit week draw. The talent show was really fun to watch.

Laser Tag . . . and a surprise!

Today we went to laser tag at Lazer Runner in Lockport. When we first got there we went upstairs to a party room to hear the rules. The person even showed us how the vest worked! Once we learned the rules the other class got to go play first in the room.  While they were playing our class got free time in the lobby. When their turn was done we got to go in and play. It was a Free-For-All the first time and it was really hard and yet fun. We both ran into walls. Then after our classes free-for-all game it was class vs. class and it was girls first. Our class was the red team and the other class was the green team. When we were facing the other team we realized that they liked going on the second level and so our class tried to avoid it. After the girls played, it was the boys turn, and the girls got free time again. After the boys were done we got on the bus and drove to our next stop.

Little did we know that the surprise was going to be ice cream at Skinner's! Jayden got a hard ice cream cone and it was cookie dough and Hailey got hard ice cream and it was Rolo ice cream. Then we went back to school and it was lunch recess.

It was a great field trip!
