Month in Review

Wow! February seemed to FLY by! We were quite excited about filling up our "R Chart" this week. We are working at being respectful in and out of the classroom. So, we try to fill in circles on a chart that we have on our wall. We can always get "bonus" circles for receiving a compliment! We decided to celebrate by wearing pjs, watching a movie WHILE having free time with the netbooks. Wow! Aren't we great at multi-tasking?! We always do a self-assessment at the end of every month, as well as set a goal for the next month. These will be shared with parents at Student-Led Conferences in a few weeks. Thanks to Renee for volunteering to share her write-up on the blog!

Here we are in our comfy pjs!
Month in Review brainstorming!

Wow Renee! Great job at keeping your fingers on the "home row"!

Month in review
This month we had pyjama day because we filled up our R chart. I wore my pyjamas. This month we also had a field trip. We went to the science gallery. It was really fun. There were lots of things to do there. I liked the pulley chairs and the shadow pictures. Elder Jules came to our school this month. He told us a story about wolves. We also had a math test and a science test. We started our novel study final projects. I am doing a scene re-enactment with Haley and Emmy. The book we read was called owls in the family. It was a good book. We did mapping in S.S. we made a map of our class room, a map of our school yard and a map of how we get to school.

Science Design Projects

Last week, we finished sharing our Design Projects. The Grade 3s had to design a game or toy that used gravity or magnets. The Grade 4s had to design a musical instrument that changed pitch and had a volume control. We were all really impressed with the designs. After the presentations, we were able to try them out. It was a super fun way to spend Friday afternoon!

Here is Robbie playing "Ode to Joy" with his water xylophone! Check it out:

TWAS

For a short week, it sure was a busy one! We had an awesome field trip, wear a readable shirt day, hot lunch, music festival practice, finished sharing the science design projects, and even managed to squeeze in 2 tests as well! *Whew!* I think we're all looking forward to the weekend! Oh, wait a minute . . . not Ms. Wasney . . . who will be scrambling to write report cards!

Thank you to Ryan for volunteering to do TWAS on the blog this week!

TWAS                                                                                                                                               In Novel study final projects me and Colin are doing a diorama and we just painted a bit and put on the hay today so on Tuesday were going to paint the sun and trees on because we wanted the other paint to dry so that it wouldn’t mix or anything! Yesterday we had a math test and it was kind of easy surprisingly and just raced over some people were on the 1st or 2nd page and I was on the last probably because I finished the subtracting and regrouping and the word problems I got done very fast! on Wednesday we had are science test I also kind of raced through it fast because sometimes I could be really quick doing my work! on Wednesday as well we went on a field trip to the science gallery at the Manitoba museum were we got an hour of free time and one of my favourites were the pulley chairs and that space shuttle repair thing and that meteor rock was surprisingly heavy I don’t know why. After are hour of free time we had are sound presentation with Kevin and he is always so funny and I like his moustache it’s cool and it was also wear a readable shirt day and I completely forgot about it but I ended up wearing one anyway even though I forgot it was weird.  When we did S.S I think yesterday we had to draw how we get to school from your house! In gym we played this fun game it was fun! In music really all were doing is practicing for the music festival. Today most of the class had Subway because it was hot lunch but I didn’t order because it didn’t have all the toppings I have on my sub so my mom just went to the place and ordered and plus I wanted a cookie and drink!!!!

Science Gallery Field Trip!

Today, we went to the Science Gallery at the Manitoba Museum. We had a full hour of exploration time and then we participated in a program on Sound. It was a super day! A BIG thank you to Mr. Friesen and Mrs. Loewen for joining in on the fun! I hope the video reminds you of the great time we had!

During the presentation on Sound, we learned about pitch, vibration, and sound waves. Here is a video of Michael, Aidan, and Alyssa demonstrating what pitch is all about! Can you tell what song they're playing?

Dress Like a Book Character Day . . . and TWAS!

Today was "Dress Like a Book Character Day" as part of our celebration for I LOVE to Read month! I was surprised that several students in the school had NO idea who I was, and then others told me that there is a "Where's Waldo App"! Well . . . . before Waldo was an App, he was in a BOOK!

Haley volunteered to do her TWAS this week on our blog.

This week at school in ELA we are doing our final projects. Renee, Emmy, and I are doing a scene Re- enactment. We are doing the scene where Billy brings Wol in the house and Ophelia screams because she didn’t know that Billy had owls. In math we made a calendar. We had to put the days of the week and any activities. It was fun! In social studies Elder Jules and Mr. Cyr came to our library and sang a song and we had to think of a wolf. He also taught us about the seven sacred teachings. We had a sharing circle and we had to tell our name and our favourite colour. Also we read a book called Nanabosho and porcupine. We had to write about the beginning, the middle, and the end. Then we had to draw a picture. It was fun! In science the grade 3’s did an experiment with static electricity and the grade 4’s did sound waves. The grade 3’s used balloons and combs. On February 14 we had our valentine’s party. It was also my birthday! I picked a notebook from Ms. Wasney's gift box. I brought in a vanilla and chocolate cupcake cake. It was very good! Today was dress like a book character day. I dressed like a ninja from magic tree house night of the ninja’s. Ms. Wasney dressed like Waldo from where’s Waldo.

Super Science!

Over the last few weeks, we have been doing some awesome science experiments in our class! The Grade 3s have been learning about Magnets and Gravity, and the Grade 4s have been learning about Sound. We would like to send out a HUGE thank you to Emmy's mom, Ms. Booth, who has been a fabulous volunteer in our classroom during our science explorations! She helped out so much with the Grade 3s during this time, which I really appreciated. I hope you enjoy the video!

What has been your favourite part of science this term?

I Love to READ Month!

For the month of February, Bird's Hill School has been celebrating I Love to READ Month. Mrs. Dent Scarcello created a month-long challenge with literacy activities, which was sent home in calendar form at the end of January (and can be found in the February newsletter). This week, we have been having D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) once a day. We also coordinated a fun bulletin board idea where each class received a giant heart and the students had to write what they love to read! It has been neat to see students checking out the hearts on the GIANT bulletin board across from the library!

We are looking forward to "Dress like a Book Character Day" . . . next Friday, February 17th!

Today, Felicia volunteered to be recorded by Mrs. Dent Scarcello as she read "Bear Feels Scared". You can listen to it here. The reading has been recorded onto a CD and will be used in the primary classrooms. Thanks for being a great role model Felicia! I know your sister in Kindergarten will be excited to hear your voice in her classroom!

TWAS

We will be having a busy day tomorrow, so we will not get a chance to do TWAS on our usual day. We decided to work on TWAS while we were in the computer lab today.

Michael volunteered to do his TWAS on our blog.

TWAS à Feb. 9
In novel study my favourite character was Wol in the owls in the family also we have one more chapter! In math we are doing math word problems and our math booklets. In science grade 3s are making compasses and grade 4s tested pitches it was really really fun! In social studies we did mapping the class room and the playground it was a little hard then I got used to it. In music / gym: music first we are leaning different songs and rhymes it is really fun and we are using our recorders more often. In D.E.A.R. Which stands for drop everything and read it comes fast when they do it on the PA but it doesn’t matter to me much. 3/4W loves to read! Which is a huge heart and we sign it with our favourite books I picked DIARY OF A WIMPY KID its by Jeff Kenny he’s a great author and he’s the number 1 author in new york city! I could’ve picked 2 books but I was good with one. And Ms.Wasney made a heart poster for every class in the school also she made a silver paper for the school board right by the entrance but sadly it got ripped It was really mean but I think Ms.Wasney will fix it so it stays good I just hope that the kid that did never does it again.

More Writing Fun!

Yesterday, Alyssa brought in a piece of writing that she did at home in the voice of her new dog Maxx. I think she was inspired by our recent Novel Study job and Emmy's writing in the voices of Railay and Wilton! I'm so excited to see the enthusiasm for writing by the students of Room 5! Woohoo!

It sounds like Maxx found the perfect family!

TWAS

TWAS   Feb.-2-12
This week at school we did ELA. And in ELA we did novel study. We are doing “owls in the family.” My favourite job in it is……… The one where you are like Wol, Weeps, Murrey, and Bruce. I chose Wol.  And in math, we are doing measurement, addition, and subtracting with re-grouping. And in science the grade 3s are doing magnet experiments. And the grade 4s are doing sound and vibration experiments. And Emmy’s mom helped out. And in S.S we are doing mapping. And in art we did: different art then last time. What we did is: we cut a heart out and then we drew lines and then we put “X” on every 2nd peace of heart cut out. And in library there is a
Tipi!!! And in music we sung: walking in the air, the gypsy rover, Hine me tov, and Loch Lomand.

Heart Art

We are getting ready for Valentine's Day by making some fun art! Our artwork is displayed on a large bulletin board, just outside of the gym (the one that faces the front doors of the school). The students really enjoyed using oil pastels, watercolour paints, and SALT to create this artwork! You can take a peek at all of the artwork on Artsonia.
