A Churchill Adventure!

This past weekend, I went to Churchill with my sister to celebrate my upcoming birthday (it's a big one)! Teachers are allowed to take 2 personal days per year, so I took Friday and Monday. As sad as I was to miss Halloween with the students of Room 31, I LOVED my adventure in Churchill! This is one of the best times to see polar bears, as they are waiting for Hudson Bay to freeze over. The town of Churchill is in their migration path. By mid-November, they will be out on the ice and not seen until spring.

Within an hour of arriving and renting a truck on Friday, we saw a "bear lift". This is when polar bears are transferred from the polar bear jail to a remote location on the tundra. Bears are placed in jail when they have put the town of Churchill at risk. Some bears stay in jail for up to a month! The one we saw looked like a mother and a cub. It was perfect timing!

We saw our first bear while driving around! It was soooooo awesome - he was just strolling along a road! We also saw the wreck of a ship from the 1960's called the MV Ithaca. It looked so neat. Apparently, when the tide is low, you can go closer to the ship! We also found Miss Piggy - a cargo plane that had crashed in 1979. Luckily, no one died, but the wreckage of the plane remains on the rocks. It was named Miss Piggy because of it's huge amount of cargo room, and the fact that it once transported pigs!

On Saturday, we went out on the Tundra Buggy to see the polar bears! We saw a mom with 2 cubs, a male that came up super close to check out our soup that we were having for lunch, and another mom with one cub. It was amazing to see them in their natural habitat! We also saw a ptarmigan; which is a bird with feathery feet, and a fox!

Yesterday, we went dog sledding! It was so much fun and the dogs clearly love their "job"! The dogs were so friendly and excited! While we waited for our turn, we could visit with the dogs, or feed the whiskey jacks!

It was a trip to remember!   :)

Monster Selfies!

We made Monster Selfies for Halloween! The stuff we used was: water to wash our paint brush, tracers for the eyes, pencil to design, sharpie to go over, water colour paper and salt.

The first step was to draw out the shape of the monsters, then we traced different sizes of eyes, then we had to trace in sharpie, then paint it. When it was dry, we brushed off the salt and we thickened up the sharpie. It was hard but easy to do. Now you can make your own monster selfie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Wonderful Week!

This week, the students of Room 31 typed up their TWAS, instead of writing it in their writer's notebooks. This is one of the first steps towards publishing work on "Kidblog"! TWAS is generally done on Fridays, but this week we did it on Thursday, as Friday was a provincial in-service day. It is a summary of the activities from the week. Students are asked to write about 2 things for each day. We are also practicing "catchy titles" for our future blogs!

Here is Lucas' TWAS for the week!

Multiple Intelligences
On Monday we had science. We are learning about the properties of air. We learned a lot just by watching videos! It is a very interesting subject. We also had a survey about what kind of smart we are. I ended up being art and wonder. One had like ten people! It was CRAZY and MINDBLOWING!

On Tuesday, we started a paper blog. It is extremely fun. I am doing a ton of designs on mine. It is very cool. It will take me awhile to finish it but I will be proud. Then we did a school-wide writing job. We had to write about something we would never forget. I wrote about getting my dog Cooper. He is so silly.

French Bingo!
On Wednesday we had silver sneaker in gym! That is when you get to play anything you want. I played spongy polo. I was really sweaty. I was drenched in sweat. It was super fun. We had science again (it is not a bad thing). We learned about air fronts. I shared a text book. We had to draw some pictures on our sheet from the book. I do not mind science.

On Thursday we did a cool piece of art. We drew a MONSTER! We did our own designs on them. After we drew them we covered the body in water. Then we painted them with water colour paint. Then we covered the background in water and painted that. It is very fun. I love art! We are doing TWAS right now! I like TWAS BETTER in the computer lab. I like TWAS because it makes us remember what we did to become a smarter kid I hope we continue to do TWAS.
Monster Selfies!

On Friday I do not know what I'm doing. I will probably play Wii U and Roblox and work on an art project I am doing . . . I will show you it someday.

A Cloudy Classroom!

This 4-day week flew by! By the sounds of it, lots of us had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!

On Tuesday, we saw our Book Buddies from Mrs. Henry's class, we did math, gym, an art reflection, and did the coolest science experiment! We made a cloud in a jar! So fun!

On Wednesday, I headed out with 6 Room 31 students to the divisional flag football tournament at Kildonan East. We had 34 Grade 4 and 5 students represent BHS. It was a pretty blustery day! A BIG thank you goes out to so many parents for coming out to cheer us on . . . and for bringing hot chocolate and treats! YUM! When we returned, we headed to the computer lab and then to music.

On Thursday, we did BHS Reads, had a class meeting, did a writing prompt, learned about the water cycle in science, did the strength-a-thon in gym, and did some math.

Today, we did BHS Reads, started some Christmas songs in Choir, did a writing job to get ready for Kidblog, visited the gym, and worked on TWAS.

The Dog House Canteen was open for 2 successful days this week. And the SPIN Club started advertising for our first campaign - Socktober! Thanks to Rhyann who brought in socks before the campaign had even officially started!  :)

SPIN Club launches SOCKTOBER!

The SPIN Club is officially launching Socktober, a Kid President initiative! Last year, BHS donated 557 pairs of NEW socks to families in need! We even received thank you letters from new refugees that appreciated the donation from us!

The Socktober campaign will run from October 17 to 31.

I'm thankful for YOU!

We've had a busy 4 day week! I've been so impressed with how the students of Room 31 are loving "BHS Reads" and our "Read to Self" time! This group of kiddos truly love reading!  :)

We started off the week with a new attendance on the Smartboard (always a hit), new spots, and new nametags for our desks. We have been doing LOTS of place value in math and loads of science. We even fit in a fun leaf art activity!

Today, the students had the day off, but teachers were able to choose a workshop for the morning. I headed over to Kildonan East Collegiate to learn about coding with other RETSD teachers. Then, all the BHS staff joined up for a school-wide in-service for the afternoon. It's always interesting when the teacher becomes the student! Ha!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Take time to think about all the things you're thankful for!

Ms. Wasney  :)

The Dog House Canteen is back!

Today, the Dog House Canteen re-opened for the school year! We will be open every second month, with proceeds going towards a variety of charities. For the month of October, we will be donating to Ronald McDonald House.

We will continue to sell popular items from last year, along with a few surprises! The Dog House Canteen is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 12:15 to 12:35. Everything is $1.00.
