30 x 30 Nature Challenge

Thanks to a teacher friend, I found out about the David Suzuki Foundation's "30x30 Nature Challenge", which encourages people of all ages to get outside and enjoy nature for an extra 30 minutes each day for the month of May!

We will be participating in the challenge each day at school . . . it might be simply taking our work outside of the classroom, getting active, or appreciating our surroundings. All Room 31 students are responsible for finding ways to be outside on the weekends! A letter will be sent home with more details.

Hope you enjoy this video . . .

Kiss a Goat?!

The SPIN Club is super excited for our next campaign with "Free the Children"! It is called "We Create Change" with the focus on raising money to buy goats for families overseas. Each goat costs $50 and helps a family gain financial independence.

Today at an assembly, we introduced the campaign to the school. We will be selling ballots for $2 for students to vote on a staff member to KISS A GOAT! Believe it or not, 12 staff members volunteered for this!

A BIG thank you goes out to Ms. Claydon, Mrs. Chubey, Ms. Davis, Mrs. Dent Scarcello, Ms. Dodds, Mrs. Gregg, Mr. Hargreaves, Ms. Knoll, Mrs. Palamar, Ms. Rand, and Mrs. Tresoor for putting their names forward! Make your vote count!

A note and ballots will be sent home next week. The ballots and $2 donation are due on May 6.

A T. W. A. S. of a kind!

I am super excited that our Kidblogs are up and running again. The students are loving it too! You can check out everyone's posts HERE. Thanks to Angela for sharing her TWAS on our class blog! All of the pictures are from our Instagram account . . . you should follow us!  :)

This week went by really quick. But it was really good and fun!

On Monday, we had a science quiz for our second term of science which was: Simple Machines! On Sunday before I went to bed, my mom helped me with the review. She would ask me questions on the review and I would have to answer them. One example is name all the seven simple machines. Which actually since I was tired, I couldn't remember all of them which freaked me out! But later on Monday, when we did our test, I could remember NO problem! .......Except for the levers......

On Monday. We got to something very fun and exciting in gym class. We.....got.....a.....extra....BOUNUS GYM!!!!!! But the funny part is I forgot why we even got it! Me and Aria and a few other fellow classmates all played on our own Mat Cars on one side of the gym. One of the most funniest part of our extra gym class was when we all fighted over the rubber pigs! It was so funny! Me and Aria found a secret compartment in the double mats where we could hide our creatures. You exspect me to tell you where that was!?!?!? NO WAY!!!! Thats our plan and we are not going to give it away.

On Tuesday, We started our term 3 science  topic......THE HUMAN BODY!!!!! I'm kind of excited for this term becasue its really facinating to learn about yourself and how you work. On Tuesday, we just started the intro, but there is yet more to come! On the intro, we had to jot down what we already know about the human body and questions we have. I had a lot of questions, thats for sure. I would really want to know how our stomach takes out the nutrients out of our food. That allways questioned me. On the back of the paper we had to put the different fancy science questions in the right area. There where about six boxes and one for breathing, the other for mucles, and so on. Later in the week, when we marked them, I got a lot wrong, but at least I tried my best!

On Tuesday, we had gym. I'm not sure if I really enjoyed this class, well some of it. I think this was  the class that we used giant playing cards for our warm up. And we practiced for our basketball term. I do not like bastket ball, but sometimes I do. Its kind of funny how my likes and dislikes change so quickly. I think we actully did two warm ups, one for bastket ball, and the other for well, I don't know, just for the rest of the gym class. The basketball warm up, we had to like do a shuffle thing sideways across the gym. From the clostest line, then back, then the next one, and back, and then the next one after that, then back again! It was so annoying!!!!!

On Wednesday, we walked to Robert Andrews to watch their play called, Hair Spray. It took us about..... Uh, half an hour to walk there. It was super cold and my head was dizzy. My ears where feezing, AND IT WAS WINDY! But the cool thing was it that we walked on Earth Day :) ! Now onto the play....It was good, but al little confusing sometimes the speaker went crazy loud! On the way back to school, It was really warm out.

On Wednesday, we also had Library. I re-newed my Karate book, and, uh, and....oh yah! I remember now. I and Aria got A Dinopedia book. About a week ago, Abbey brought her Dinosaur book and she opened to a random page and that was the dinosaur you where for the day. I and Aria also kind of did that in the library with the dino book. It turned out that I was a little bird chicken thing and Aria was a T.Rex!

On Thursday, We, well I for one had Mad science in the morning. When my mom woke me up I could sure feel the difference of how tired I was. I could barely get out of bed. The first class was simple, and kind of weired. We learned about the digestive system which perfectly fits in with our term topic in science.  Every class we get a take-home project. This one, well was weired. We basicly got a human stomach in a bag. At home, we are supposed to pur water and gross stuff in the bag, let it sit over night, and push it out the other end! I`m bad at explaining, but trust me, its worse then it sounds.

On Thursday, We had TWAS which I am doing at home right now at 5:03 pm. I am actually doing it on my tablet, isn't that weired? This was my second TWAS to put on the my blog. Hmmmmm, what else to say....Ok, figured something out to say. First of all, I can't wait to get working on more weekly TWASes on here. Second, uh, well....I forgot.

On Friday, I have no idea what I'm going to do. But I think Aria might come over....maybe. the reason I never know what I'm going to do the next day is because I am not one of those kind of people that plan ahead. I'm the kind that just goes where ever life takes them. That's how I enjoy it the best unless it's not my cup of tea to be taken where life tells me, but other wise, I just go with the flow. If Aria does come over, we will probably play outside in my HUGE backyard. then maybe later, we might play Minecraft or make a fort under my bunk bed. What ever happens, I will try to enjoy it. 😊 :)

A "newsworthy" TWAS!

Book Buddies on Monday!
This week flew by really fast. On Monday we did some earth day art. Ms Wasney got shaving cream in a cookie sheet and mixed it with paint. Then we dipped a piece of paper in and took them out again. Then we scraped the shaving cream off and it made an Earth! I really enjoyed this art and hope we could do something like it again.
Black-out Poetry on Tuesday!
Fire Drill on Tuesday!
On Tuesday we went to the Library and got new books. Normally I wouldn’t talk about Library but this one was special. I got one of my favourite comics from the Library (besides Amulet) called Ghostopolis. It was about a paranormal investigator who accidentaly broke one of the rules and captured a ghost without visual contact. I really love this book and am currently reading it when i go to bed.
Wednesday: we went to a mini assembly. it was a practice for when CTV news comes to Birds Hill! (probably should have said this sooner but SPOILER ALERT!) so thats pretty much it so i will type about something else now. We did a letter writing intro so we can write a letter to someone from another school called a PenPal.
JETS assembly on Thursday!
On Thursday we had a JETS assembly and guess what… CTV NEWS WAS HERE. you knew that didn’t you… probably shouldn’t of said that earlier. So it was pretty fun having them here and we got to listen to the playoff anthem. After that we… oh wait it was also we are silent! Almost every student was participating. you had to wear a tag and be silent for almost a whole day!
TWAS on Kidblog for the 1st time!
And now the wonderful…amazing…FRIDAY! all the Patrols went to Wheelies. I have no idea what it is but it sounds pretty cool. so everyone that was left was joined by Mrs. Dyck’s class. so it was a pretty laid back day I would say. we got to do: Math bingo Free time Read to self and Math games. then when the Patrols got back we got to do a few things then come here (Here is the CPU lab by the way).
Well thats my T.W.A.S so… SEE YOU NEXT TIME!

UNICEF update!

Earlier this week, we received a framed certificate from UNICEF recognizing Bird's Hill School for being one of the top 3 schools in Manitoba for fundraising during the campaign in October, 2014. This is the 3rd year in a row that we've received this designation!

Way to go BHS!

Shhhhhhh! We are Silent!

Today we participated in We Are Silent! The grade fours and fives get to participate in this event. The reason we are silent is because 31 million girls are not heard so we stay silent so then they can speak for their rights. Today a lot of kid’s bought tags for 1 dollar to participate in this event! We hope that you are staying silent! Let children that are not heard speak out!!!

We also did a writing job to talk about children`s rights. We had to answer some questions. Should children be granted the same rights as an adult? We also had to share our thoughts about some facts about what is happening to some children. Like here is one of them: “15% of the world`s children are engaged in child labour.” That means children are forced to work in factories! I hope you enjoyed reading this post!!!

It was pretty easy participating in We Are Silent!

GO JETS GO!!!!!!

Winnipeg Jets Assembly!

Today on April the 16th our Winnipeg Jets have their first playoff game in 19 years and our school has been celebrating big time and when I mean big time I mean BIG. The reason its big time is because CTV news came and videotaped all of our school yelling TRUE NORTH in Oh Canada and we also sang the new playoff anthem. Our class practiced that song so much and we had a few times the whole school practiced.

Jason, Brett, Leif, Dobie, Liam, Andrew, Caeden, and I all sang with our hands around each other and I think our class had to be the loudest by far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was pretty much how our assembly went and we also did the wave and chanted GO JETS GO And PAVE, PAVE.

Earth Day Art!

Next week we are celebrating Earth Day. So for a fun art activity Ms. Wasney had us do something really fun!! We took a cookie sheet and covered it in shaving cream. Yes, shaving cream! Then Ms. Wasney drizzled different shades of green and blue paint on top of the shaving cream. With a spoon she dragged the colors to make a pretty cool design. With the help of my buddy Aria, we put a plain piece of paper on top of the shaving cream and gently pushed down to cover the entire piece of paper with the shaving cream and paint. When we thought it was all covered we dragged the paper off to one side to smear all the color over the paper. We had to let the paint and shaving cream set for 5 minutes before we took a squeegee and removed the excess paint.

When it dried it left the most amazing design on my paper!! We cut a circle out of the paper and it looked just like the planet earth from up in space. With a red heart we left a message on our project. My message was "Recycle and reuse as much as you can!" We all chose something from our hearts to make sure that we take care of our planet. This activity really shows how we all support Earth Day and how we want to keep our planet.

Go JETS Go!

Well, the enthusiasm of the Winnipeg Jets making the playoffs took BHS by storm today! Lots of jerseys could be seen in the halls, we shouted "True North" during Oh Canada and heard an awesome song created by Ace Burpee and the folks at Virgin 103.1 at morning announcements. Here's the video . . .

Kidblog post criteria!

After a hiatus of almost 3 months, we are back up on Kidblog! Yay!

Yesterday, we went to the lab and had a choice of 3 things to post about (Spring Break, Spirit Week in Room 31, or Day of Pink). I was quite pleased with how many students completed their post in a short amount of time.

Today, before returning to the lab to finish up our post, we created criteria that we feel is important for all of our posts to include.

Thanks for following our blogging journey! Check out our Kidblog site by clicking HERE.

Stand for Respect!

On April 8th it was day of pink the day we stand up for bullying. Day of pink started when a kid in high school in Nova Scotia got bullied for wearing a pink shirt 2 other kids took a stand and bought 50 pink shirts and told everyone to wear it to stand up for bullying

Today we made pink bracelets for anyone who didnt have pink.

We did a day of pink activity! It was where our class picked slips some people got to be the bully, the bullied or the bystander. Then we had to share our feelings with the others in our group. Then we had to do a poem about what we would feel if we were an actual bully, bystander or bullied and most people shared what they wrote in their poem, they either read it out loud themselves or made Ms.wasney read it.

Overall it was another awesome Day of pink like always!

Decorah Eagles spy cam!

Spring is the time for new beginnings . . . especially in the animal world! For the last few years, a favourite website of Room 31 has been the live stream of the Decorah Eagles.

Just recently, three eaglets have hatched in Decorah, Iowa. The beauty of the live stream allows us to watch them grow up! It is amazing to see the nest up close and how the parents care for their young.

Can you tell the difference between the mom and the dad?
