Cloud in a Jar Experiment!

Yesterday, we made a cloud with a jar, pie plate, ice cubes and hairspray.  It was really cool. It was really foggy in the jar. It looked like a cloud when it came out. It looked like one of the foggy clouds. First we put hot water in the glass jar then we put the pie plate with ice cubes on top of the jar. then we lifted the pie plate up then we put hairspray in the jar to make the foggy cloud. The hairspray was acting like cloud condensation. To make a cloud, you need warm, moist air, cooling, and cloud condensation (like dust, smoke or air pollution.

Birch Trees in the Fall

Fall is definitely my favourite season! I have loved seeing the leaves change over the last few weeks. We brought the look of fall into our classroom with a beautiful art project. Thanks to Matthew for helping me take some photos for the video!  - Ms. Wasney  :)

This week at school we had Birch Tree art! It was so fun because at the end, the art looked really amazing. First we had to put the tape on. Then we put blue and green watercolor paint for the background. After that we waited one day for it to dry and then pulled off the tape. On the day it dried, we used oil pastel to color on the birch marks and the shaded side on all the trees. Then we put three colors of paint: yellow, red and orange with mini sponges to make some leaves.  Then we pulled the tape off for the frame. When we pulled it off, it looked really cool!!! It looks really cool on the bulletin board because it’s all black then you look at the art then it pops out at you!

International Dot Day!

On Monday the 15 of September we celebrated International Dot Day!
Here is what we did: we first read the book called “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds. The moral of the book is that only a single dot can make a big difference in art. So inspire others to try, try, try and don’t give up no matter how frustrated you are getting.

Then we did some math but first we read a book called “A Million Dots” by Andrew Clements illustrated by Mike Reed. It tells you facts like it would take 464,000 school-lunch cartons to fill a 20-by-40 foot pool (please pass the straws)! For Math, we had to see how many dots we could make in one minute, then we had to group them by 10s and count them up. It would take our class just over 3 hours to draw one million dots!

Another fun activity was colouring a circle. Then, we put the paper under the iPad and used the app CoLAR Mix to make the dots come to life. We also played a dot game with a partner. We can’t wait until the next International Dot Day!

This year, what do you want to BE?!

I worked on a back to school bulletin board in August with the theme; "What do you want to BE?". Yesterday, we watched the following video by Kid President. Then, the students worked in their table groups to brainstorm all the attributes they want to develop or enhance this year. It was awesome! I can't wait to add all their words to our bulletin board!

First Week Fun in Room 31!

Wow! What a whirlwind of a week, and the students were only here 3 days! We've had a super start to Grade 5! The students are a fantastic group of young people; already eager to learn new things!

We had an assembly on the first day. It was great for the students to put a face to the name of our new principal, Mrs. Palamar. We organized our supplies, took first day photos, and got to know one another through various activities. I started reading the book "Wonder" out loud during snack. It's about Grade 5 students . . . so pretty much the most perfect novel to read right now!

On Day 2, we did some "book shopping", tried attendance on the SMARTBoard, worked on an awesome team-building activity at our table groups, had an intro lesson on the SMARTBoard, and started an art job. The team-building activity was to create structures using cups, string and an elastic band . . . without using hands to actually touch the cups! The best part of my day was hearing the cheers when a table group accomplished a task. It was SO cool! Pictures to be posted soon!  :)

Today, we signed up for classroom jobs, learned how to do number of the day for math, wrote a review about our first week, and continued working on our art job.

It has been a great week, and that's all thanks to YOU. Have a fantastic weekend and rest up!

Ms. Wasney   :)
