TWAS

Haley's all set to share her
portfolio!
Step 1 of our art job!
This week at school (Monday) we did step 1 in art. We did Birch trees. Step one was: we had to put tape going the long way on a piece of paper. Those were the trees. We could put 1, 2, 3 or 4 maybe more trees if they can fit. We also put branches on the trees. I did 2 trees.   Then we painted the sky. Before we painted we had to make sure the tape was pressed down good so that the paint wouldn’t leak under the tape. The colours we used were magenta, dark blue, turquoise blue, fuscia and violet. I used turquoise, dark blue and violet. Then while it was still wet we put salt on it to make a texture when it dries. We also did portfolios. We had to write out reflection tags for each subject. Except for health and music. Those two were optional! Then we went to the computer lab. We did All the Right Type. It’s a really cool and fun typing program to teach students how to type properly!

Step 2 of our art job!
On Tuesday we did step two of our Birch tree art. We had to brush off all of the salt in the garbage can. Then we had to take off the tape pulling it towards us. Some paint leaked through but then Madison said that it looked like frost on the branches. It did look a lot like frost. Then we had to put black stripes on the trees with a black oil pastel. When we were done we had to use a grey oil pastel as a shadow on the tree. But we could only put the shadow on one side of the tree otherwise it wouldn’t look good. Then we did more portfolio stuff. We did a two minute multiplication paper. We had to do as many as we could in two minutes. There were 60 questions on the paper. I did 31 questions. I got one wrong though. Then we did a handwriting sample. We had to write everything in handwriting. The thing we had to write was what we liked in term 1. Then we had gym. We played a game called capture the pin. It’s like capture the flag except with a pin.

On Wednesday we had word work Wednesday! The word was Scoreboard. We had to make smaller words from that word. But first we had to figure out the big 10 letter word. Hannah figured out the big word. Then we did math. We all played a game called around the world. Someone would start and go to someone in the classroom. Then Ms. Wasney would say a multiplication question and who ever got it right would get to keep going around that table. If they beat everyone at that table then that person would pick a different table and if they made it to every table then they made it around the world. I made it to 2 tables. Nobody made it around the world though. Then we did a classroom clean-up. Some people cleaned the library bins and some people did the board games. Other people cleaned their tote trays. I cleaned my tote tray. It was kind of messy.

On Thursday we are doing TWAS on the netbooks. Then we had a Christmas concert choir practice. We are singing two songs called “Masters in this Hall” and “Aidemus.”Then we are going to do our portfolios. We will share them with a partner. Some people have their parent teacher today and some people have it tomorrow on Friday.

On Friday we have NO SCHOOL!!!!!

Portfolios

The finished Comic Life posters!
GUESS WHAT?! THIS WEEK WE ARE GETTING READY FOR PARENT TEACHER. IN GRADE 5 WE USE BINDERS FOR PORTFOLIOS, WE ALSO USED COMIC LIFE FOR OUR PORTFOLIOS. OUR TEACHER MS. WASNEY PRINTED OUR COMIC LIFE IN COLOUR AT HER HOUSE. COMIC LIFE IS A POSTER WITH LOTS OF PICTURES AND SPEECH BUBBLES. WE CAN DESIGN OUR OWN COMIC WITH IT. THEN WE HAD TO PUT ONE CHOICE FROM EVERY SUBJECT IN OUR PORTFOLIOS EXCEPT HEALTH AND MUSIC WAS OPTIONAL. WE HAD TO WRITE REFLECTIONS FOR EVERY PAGE WE PUT IN. AT THE BEGINNING OF SCHOOL MS. WASNEY TOOK A PICTURE OF US ON OUR FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, WHICH IS ON THE FIRST PAGE OF THE PORTFOLIO. OUR PORTFOLIOS ARE VERY ORGANIZED AND VERY NEAT. WE THINK OUR PARENTS WILL LIKE THEM.

Birch Trees in Winter Art

On Monday we started an art piece called Birch Bark Art. It is when we got some masking tape then we trimmed it and made them look like trees. When we were done the trunks of the trees we used our scraps and made branches then put them on. And put it on the white paper then painted our sky over it and we also put salt over top of the paint to make it look better. Then when the sky dried on the paper we pulled the masking tape off and it would look like white Birch Bark trees. Then after that we put black oil pastel marks for the birch bark. Then we used a grey oil pastel and shaded in one side of the tree so it would look like a shadow. And if we wanted we could use a Q-tip and dipped into white paint and dabbed it onto the paper to make it look like snow falling. When we finished it all we left it overnight in our classroom and let it dry out. Then the next day they looked amazing!!! Ms.Wasney put them up on the wall for the parents to see at parent teacher.

TWAS in pictures!

We have had a VERY busy week! It was so busy today that we didn't even do TWAS . . . I technically only saw the Grade 5s for one period - at library! On Monday, several students participated in a tri-school volleyball tournament with Dr. Hamilton and Maple Leaf. The girls played at BHS and the boys went to Dr. Hamilton. On Tuesday, we started working on our portfolios. We wrote a review of the first term in Grade 5. I was pleased that so many students gave Term 1 a 4 or 5 (out of 5) star rating! On Wednesday, we did MORE portfolio work by creating a Comic Life of photos from the first term. This is probably my favourite portfolio job . . . I can't wait to see them all printed in colour! I had to laugh when Carter referred to me as the paparazzi! Hmmmm . . . do I take too many photos?! Yesterday, we worked on art reflections and started picking some work samples to include in our portfolios. Our Grade 1 Book Buddies came to our class for a visit and to read a few books. Today, the patrols headed to Wheelies for the morning and had a great time! We finished off the week with French, gym and library. We are almost finished reading "How to Steal a Dog". It has been a fantastic book so far! LOTS of us are curious about how it will end!

Doves for Peace Art

In class, we have been doing an Art project called Dove Art. It is a Remembrance Day. Art. First we picked a stencil that we liked. Then we traced it and cut it out. Then we chose warm or cool colours. We were allowed to choose up to 3 colours or more. Then we took our finger and coloured around it and continued the pattern. When we were finished we wrote around the circles we made with our fingers what peace looks like, tastes like, feels like, smells like and sounds like. When we were done, we handed it in to Ms. Wasney and then she put it up on the bulletin board. It was a very fun art.

Designing a Weather Vane

Last week, we did a science design project. We had to make weather vanes. We could only use these materials: a wooden dowel, manila tag paper, I meter of tape, orange plasticine, 4 straight pins, ruler, 4 straws, scissors, markers and a pencil. It was a little tricky because those were the only materials we could use. The reason we needed to make a weather vane was because the local skydiving company needed a weather vane to determine the wind direction. This is some of the criteria for our weather vane: the weather vane needed to have the 4 cardinal wind directions (N,E,S,W), it had to withstand 2 different wind speeds, must be reliable during numerous tests and design should promote the local skydiving company.  We had to fill out a logbook and sketch out a design of our project. We worked in our table groups. Most table groups finished in two days. We also had to make names for our skydiving company. Emmy’s was UFO Skydiving and mine was Jumpin George’s Skydiving Palace. So then Ms.Wasney tested them with a hair dryer on high and on low. It was a very fun project!!!!

Peacemakers and Patrols of the Month Recognition

We sure have a caring group of students in Room 31! Several of us volunteer time as Peacemakers or Patrols (or both!). This week, Lucas was recognized with Alex as Peacemakers of the month for October. And today, Madison received a certificate for being a Patrol of the month for October. Way to go! Keep up the fantastic work. You are definitely role models for the younger students at BHS!

TWAS

This week, both Carter and Trystin volunteered to do TWAS on the blog, sooooooo, I cut and pasted their work. Carter's typing in purple, Trystin's work is in black. For a short week, we sure were busy!

This week at school we had no school on Monday!

Tuesday
This week at school I had I.B.L. in I.B.L I was studying tornadoes on a site called Wikipedia for kids. And so far I have at least half a page of writing. I also had gym. In gym we were doing a game called 123, why the game was called 123 is because the game has… 3 levels. And the first level was no defence and the second level was defence and number 3 was offence and defence.

On Tuesday we had math and we had gym. In gym we played a game and we had a science quiz. Then we did a dove art.

Wednesday
On Wednesday I had a science design project about how to make a weather vane and my table group had clay on the bottom with north, west, and east and south, and it has a wooden dowel for the pole and arrow made out of paper and straw with a pin to make it stay. And I also had an R-chart Celebration and I wore my p.j’s and at the end of the day we watched a movie called Hop and the movie was about the Easter Bunny.

On Wednesday we worked on a science design project. We had to design a weather vane. Ours worked. Ms Wasney tested it with a hairdryer!  And we counted money for unicef. And we had the R chart celebration where we watched a move called Hop. It was a good movie.
Thursday
On Thursday I had French. We were supposed to have a quiz, but the printer was not working and she had to move it to my birthday. So I just did bingo in French.

On Thursday we had gym we played a game called 123 it was fun.  And we had IBL I am researching tornadoes.  Then we had French and we played bingo. I did not win.

Friday
I also had math games and I played multiplication war with cards and we had book buddies and social studies.

Today, we had music, played math games and we have TWAS which we are doing right now. After recess, we have book buddies and social studies.

UNICEF update!

I absolutely LOVE running the UNICEF campaign each year with my students! Even though it's a busy time of the year with other fundraising events going on, sport commitments, and report cards sneaking up . . . it always brings a smile to my face to see kids helping others! We were kept busy creating posters, making morning announcements, and updating the graph each day. This week, we spent some time sorting, counting, and rolling coins. And now the students have reflected on the experience. I am always pleased to read that so many students truly enjoy helping others and feel that they can make a difference! That is AWESOME!

A special shout out goes to Ms. Dodds' class . . . they brought in so many donations that they made it OFF the graph! Our class came in 2nd, and Mrs. Tresoor's class rounded out the top 3 for fundraising this year! Woohoo!

Here's a short video of pictures. Keep an eye on the growth of the graph!

R Chart Celebration!

Today we had our first celebration for filling up our R-chart. We had decided to do a P.J. day with the netbooks and wacky hair and a movie! We are watching Hop the movie. It is really funny. We all voted as a class to watch the different movies kids brought, and in a total vote of 18, we picked Hop. We are having so much fun in our PJs, but we have to change for Gym! We are enjoying ourselves and with our wacky hair it looks like some of us girls JUST got up. Only one boy wore P.Js…. Carter! Shout out to you because you were the only boy who wore P.Js! We will work hard and fill up another R-Chart!
