WE Day Manitoba 2013!
Today, Mrs. Tressor, Mrs. Dehn, and I had the pleasure of taking 27
Grade 6 SPIN Club members to the MTS Centre to join 16 000 other
"difference makers" from Manitoba to WE Day! You cannot BUY a ticket to
WE Day - you EARN it! It was a phenomenal day . . . full of inspiring
messages and heart-felt words of hope. This first video is a slideshow
of pictures to give you an idea of what the day was all about!
The second video is for you to experience the energy and enthusiasm taking place when all 16 000 people were doing the WE Day Dance at the SAME time! So cool!

Peacemakers Visit Primary Classrooms
We are super lucky to have lots of Peacemakers in Room 31! Last week; Emmy, Alyssa, Haley, and Taylor volunteered to type up some information about Peacemakers to share with the Kindergartens, Grade 1s and 2s. We are finding that the younger students don't really know what Peacemakers are all about! Today, the girls visited one of the Kindergarten classes and tomorrow, they will visit the other Kindergarten class and the Grade 1s and 2s. Here is a video of what they are sharing with the students . . .
Thanks for your help girls! - Ms. Wasney :)

TWAS
This week at school (Monday) we had a recycle presentation. It was in the gym. The people that presented were Kent and Dana. Their stage names were Gus and Gerti. Two people in each class were in the presentation. They had a little line to say. It was really cool! Then we did a math quiz review. I got one thing wrong. Our class is also in charge of UNICEF! We watched a video and then we made posters. We could have a partner or work by ourselves. I worked with a partner. My partner was Emmy. We still haven’t finished our poster yet.
Math Journal Flip Chart |
On Wednesday we did word work. We do it on the SMARTboard. The word was 10 letters. We have to make smaller words from the 10 letters, but we also have to try and unscramble the letters into a word. The word was Interviews. Then we had music. Ms. Daraska was our substitute teacher for music. We did a music review for a test. Then we had computer lab. In the computer lab we did All the Right Type. It’s a program to teach us how to type properly. Some kids did something else. I was one of those kids. Four of us wrote a script for peacemaking to tell the Kindergarten, grade 1’s, and grade 2’s about peacemaking. It was Taylor P, Alyssa P, Emmy and me. We also reached our class goal for UNICEF. It was $105.00.

The Water Cycle
Last
week during our science class we learned about the water cycle. This is how it
goes. When it rains it is called precipitation! Next when the sun gets so hot
it evaporates the water that is on the ground and turns it into a vapour which is a gas. And it
becomes a cloud. This is called condensation. Condensation is when the
water vapour cools and turns back into water droplets. The cloud gets heavy and then it rains or snows. And it goes over and
over again! It is important to have a water cycle because without the water
cycle there would be no water so nothing could survive.

TWAS
On Monday we did writers workshop. In
writers workshop Emmy and I created a really funny Halloween list. We also did
a number of the day. It was our last time doing that sheet for number of the
day. We also had French. French was okay but not my favourite class.
On Tuesday we had science. In science we
learned about the water cycle. First the water cycle starts with precipitation
the water comes down out of the clouds and the sun heats up the water which
is called evaporation then it turns into vapour gas. Then the 3rd part of the cycle is condensation turns the gas into clouds
then the cycle starts over. We watched a video. The video was very educational
in a fun way. We also had math. The math was a math journal. We got to make a
place value chart. That was fun.
Thanksgiving Leaves |
On Wednesday we had art. In art we did a
piece of Thanksgiving art. We made a leaf out of construction paper. Then we
wrote five things we were thankful for. I wrote I was thankful for: food, shelter,
friends, family, school. It was really fun but hard. We also had 2 FIREDRILLS!!!
Book Buddies! |
On Thursday we had T.W.A.S. we will also
be having music. I am also really excited for book buddies!! We will also be
having a Thanksgiving assembly!! Over all this is an awesome week.

Pointillism Art
In school we did an art job called pointillism. Pointillism is where
we get a blank sheet of paper and make a picture on it. Using only dots, no
solid lines! It was so weird that the two of us did the same picture without
even knowing! We both did mountains and sky and grass. It was really hard
because it took forever and we had to bring it home for homework! When we
stood farther back from the pictures it looked more like a picture not dots!
But when you are closer it looks like a lot of dots and it is hard to tell what
the picture is. It was really cool to see everyone’s neat pictures!

Education for Change Speaking Tour
Today, we had 2 special guests from the Free the Children organization visit BHS. Tina and O'Neil are speakers that are visiting 9 schools in Manitoba as part of the Education for Change Speaking Tour. BHS is the ONLY school in our division to receive this amazing opportunity! The Grade 5s and 6s were an engaged audience for a whole hour! We learned about social justice issues, with a focus on the right to an education for children all over the world. Then, for the remainder of the day, 24 Grade 6 S.P.I.N. Club members participated in an amazing workshop. The day was full of inspiring messages and super team-building! We are pumped to start our year of campaigns with Free the Children . . . raising awareness and funds!
TWAS
This week, TWAS will be shared in pictures! I was at school, but in a workshop with some S.P.I.N. Club members all day. So, the students of Room 31 had to do TWAS the old-fashioned way . . . with paper and pencil. This means there was no student available to type up an entry!
This week was busy and brought a whole new month, which means a fun attendance . . . squeals of excitement all around! A new month also means a new seating plan; which the students designed on the SMARTBoard - so fun! We had bus evacuation and met with our Grade 1 Book Buddies for the first time. We made up secret handshakes to do each time we see one another - so cute! Today, all the Grade 5s and 6s were invited to the gym for a presentation from the Education for Change Speaking Tour, courtesy of Free the Children. BHS was the ONLY school in the entire division and one of nine schools in MB to receive this awesome opportunity! Woohoo!
And don't worry, we also managed to fit in some school work this week too! Ha Ha
All of these pictures are from our Instagram account! Follow us @mswasneysclass . . . it's a fun way to see what we're up to!

Classroom Expectations
As you may know, Bird’s Hill staff has worked hard to create behaviour matrices for various areas in our school(playground, lunchroom, and bus loop). A school-wide initiative this year is for all teaching areas to create a matrix of expectations (including the gym, music room, and library). As a class, we created this classroom matrix for Room 31. Please ask your child to explain it to you!
