TWAS

We've had another great, but busy week of school! Today, we had the most perfect weather for the Terry Fox Run and 2 fire drills!

Lindsay is sharing her TWAS on the blog this week . . .

TWAS September 28th 2012
Every day this week sometime in the day we would have some people do summer sharing. We do summer sharing because Ms.Wasney would like to hear what we did over the summer. Every month we do Month in review. Month in review is where we put down stuff like what we would work harder on next month or what you though you did well on stuff like that. We also did an art project called pointillism. Pointillism is a picture where you chose anything and you can only draw it with dots nothing can have lines. On Friday we had 2 fire drills so that if we have a real fire well now what to do. This week we had four thing out of the class Music, Gym, Library and Choir. On Friday we had the Terry fox run I got to Alberta. A couple days a week we have French. But ms.Wasney is not the one who teaches us French Ms. Davis does. On Thursday we had two subs Mrs.Cattanyi in the morning and Mrs.Binda.

Month in Review!

Every month, I like to  have the students do a self-assessment about our school activities. The students have to write about things they enjoyed, things they wish we would do, things they were good at, things they need to work harder on, and a goal for the next month. This is a nice way for the students to take responsibility for their learning. After brainstorming, we realized that we have done LOTS during this first month of school!

Zach won the draw and was willing to share part of his Month in Review on the blog:

Month in Review
This month, I enjoyed million dots, book nooks, Terry Fox Run, Terry Fox writing, first fire drill, 25th anniversary, name art, choir, gym, music, and library. I like the name art because it was fun.
I wish we would go to the computer lab soon.

Name Art!

During the first few weeks of school, we worked on Name Art. It was a very cool art job that looks way easier than it actually IS to create! We had to alternate the layout of the letters of our names . . . the first letter had to touch the left-hand side and bottom of the page, the second letter had to touch the first letter and the top of the page. We had to keep up the pattern, and then make fun designs in the open sections on the paper. Finally, we had to colour it all in! This artwork was featured in the display case (near the office) during Open House and BHS's 25th Anniversary Celebration. If you'd like a closer peek at our artwork, you can check out our Artsonia site by clicking HERE. If you can't see your artwork, it means that your parents haven't given permission for your work to be featured on Artsonia yet. Please make sure they do! On the site, you can even purchase items with YOUR artwork on them! Here's a fun video of the process of our Name Art:

Camp Arnes!

On Monday, September 17th, we headed off to Camp Arnes for 3 fun-filled days! Luckily, the weather cooperated for the majority of our time there. We were busy, busy, BUSY! We enjoyed many daytime activities, such as; Climbing Wall, Cooperative Games & Initiative Tasks, High Ropes, Instincts for Survival Game, Orienteering, and the popular Zip Line! In the evening, we had a Hayride, Fire & Bannock, Human Foosball, Inflatable Arena, and lots of outdoor choices for Free Time. It was such a fun experience! Hope you enjoy the video!

What was your favourite part about camp?

TWAS

Today, the students had a fun surprise of doing their OWN attendance on the SMARTBoard! They had to find their name on the white side and slide it over to the red side. When they did it, their attendance magically changed from "______ is absent" TO "______ is here". A BIG thank you to Mrs. Tresoor for sharing it with me to use in our classroom!

It felt like a short week at school because we spent 3 days of it at Camp Arnes! Nick agreed to share his TWAS on the blog this week.

TWAS-Sept. 21,2012
This week at school we;
Went to camp Arnes! The boys stayed at Poplar Grove. In my room was Nathaniel, Cameron, Riley, Colin and Ryan W..The girls stayed at Cedar lodge. Most of the food was good. My favourite food was spaghetti. My favourite activity was Zipline. I went second on it. To get up you climbed up these thin horseshoe like things. At the end there was tires so you would not hit the pole. You had to wear a chest harness AND a leg harness. The leg harness was for climbing and chest harness was for the actual Zip. We arrived in 3 busses, one for Grade 5 and one for Grade 6. The last one was for ALL the luggage. It was so crammed in the luggage bus but lots of open seats in the grade 5 bus.
Got a new student! Her name is Carly. The fourth new student in our class this year. 1 is a boy and 3 girls. She moved in from Washington. She stays at our table with me, Jack, Kyla and Brooklyn. She is kinda quiet
More French with Ms. Davis. We did a sheet on history of French. We also did a sheet where we worked together in table groups to figure out what the clipart and spell it in French. We got 2 things. It was my name is and happy birthday.
Music. All we really did was the grade five review on music notes and sort our binders.
A attendance sheet on the SMARTBoard. When you walk in all the names say _______ is absent. Then you use your finger to slide in to the red box and it changes into _______ is here. Then at the end Ms. Wasney will do the attendance and mark down whoever is absent.
We had more number of the day. To decide the number of the day you would roll dice on the SMARTBoard. Then you would do stuff like multiply by 100 and count back by 5’s and sum of the digits and a lot more stuff.
A camp Arnes project. I’m doing a brochure. So I did a really good logo of camp Arnes on the front cover. You have to do a poster, a newspaper article or a brochure so I did a brochure. We would write about the food and activities and stuff like that.

Welcome Carly!

We returned to school after 3 days at Camp Arnes to be greeted by a new student to our classroom! Welcome to BHS Carly! I know you will fit in great with the kids in Room 31! The girls are very happy, as they were feeling a little outnumbered by the boys!

I hope you enjoy the video of our first day pictures! I was lucky enough to snap one of Carly today. The students had the option of using a frame and making a funny face, or just a regular pose. I got the idea from my sister's photobooth business! We had lots of fun being silly!

TWAS

Our brainstorming on
the SMARTBoard!
Well, we finished our first FULL week of Grade Five! YAY!!! Every Friday, we will be writing a TWAS (This Week At School) letter home to share with our families. It's a nice way for parents to learn about what's taking place in our classroom and at school. I randomly drew a name and it was Memphis! She agreed to share her TWAS on the blog. This was really funny to us, since Memphis is quite the expert at it already . . . seeing as though she was in my 3/4 class last year! This was our first time using the Netbooks this year!

T.W.A.S à Sept 14, 2012
This week we did In ELA we did are doing read to self I am reading dear dumb diary it is really like it so far. And it is three book’s in one I am on the second book. In math we are doing number of the day and we played around the world but I did not get to. And we get to play a math game after we do are number of the day but I did not get to play one. Book Nooks

In our classroom, we have a variety of comfy spots to do our work. Students are welcome to grab a clipboard and work anywhere around the room . . . as long as they aren't distracting others from their work. I always like to say; "you're not glued to your seat/desk"! To make it fair, we have a way of keeping track of who gets what each day. Choices include: comfy cushions, carpet squares, 2 butterfly/camping chairs, a black moon chair, a share chair (which is a director's chair), a rocking chair, "Free Choice", at your desk, and even "Ms. Wasney's chair". So far, this system is working wonderfully! We have a person that rotates the names along the list at the end of each day. Several students make a point of checking out the list to see what chair they will be getting next! I'm hoping this enthusiasm stays throughout the year!

What has your favourite Book Nook been so far? Which one are you looking forward to trying out?

Fantastic First Few Days of Grade FIVE!

This is an interactive name tag . . . students
had to show their favourite place on earth, someone that
taught them something, best thing
about school, and something they love to do! This
was an awesome way to learn more about one another!
Well, it's the end of the 2nd day of school . . . the students are long gone and I thought it was a perfect time to FINALLY post something on our blog! Did you know . . . Mrs. Tresoor and I were in the school in August PAINTING bulletin boards in our rooms?! Since I changed grades this year, it meant changing classrooms too! You can check out Mrs. Tresoor's blog to see some painting pictures by clicking here. I am just loving the colours and the "fun feel" of Room 31!

Yesterday, we enjoyed getting to know one another. We have 3 new students to BHS in our room, so I know that they will fit in nicely with the friendly kids we have at the school!

Today, we tried out the SMARTboard! This is totally new for ME, as well as the students! It was super fun to work on the Temperature Graph, and to learn the "tricks" of using the SMARTboard! We will be exploring with it everyday and learning together.
