Once again, the SPIN Club is collecting NEW pairs of socks for "Socktober". This is a Kid President initiative and we have ran the campaign for the last few years. Last year, we donated over 200 pairs of socks to Mosaic Newcomer Resource Centre, and in return received hand-written notes from the new refugees that had received the socks.
We will be collecting socks until October 12.
Thanks for your support!

Brrrrrrrr! A cold end to September!
Brrrrrr! We actually saw some snow flurries this week out at recess! I really think that it is WAY too early for that! We worked on an amazing art project over the last three days. It had lots of steps, but they all look so beautiful . . . and each piece is unique! Please be sure to check out the art on Artsonia.
Picture Day was on Monday! Mr. Visch visited our class to explain what his job as a resource teacher at BHS is. He brought a whole bunch of neat brain teaser puzzles - he has over 40!
We met with our Grade 2/3 book buddies once again. We read together and played a math game. We have continued our work with place value in math and completed a fun science job.

Ending the week with a SMILE and continuing a dream!
We've had a busy week in Room 31! We continued with lots of "firsts" . . . Weekend Wind-up on Monday, meeting our Grade 2/3 Book Buddies, Word Work Wednesday, Cup-stacking Challenge, and TWAS today! We started working on place value in math and had our first science class. The Grade 4s will be learning about animal habitats and Grade 5s will be focusing on weather.
On Tuesday, we were surprised with donuts from Damien and his family as a thank you for looking for his missing glasses out in the playground on Monday.
Thank you to all the families for coming out to the Open House BBQ! It was great to meet new parents and catch up with the ones I know already!
Today, I brought in smile cookies from Tim Hortons. Mrs. Tresoor and I have been doing it for years! This year, all the proceeds (from sales in Winnipeg) go to the Children's Rehabilitation Foundation.
We also had our Terry Fox run this afternoon. It was a little on the chilly side, but the students did great! Some Grade 4s and 5s volunteered to be run buddies to younger students or to help along the race route.
Just a reminder that Monday, September 24 is Picture Day! Bring your SMILE!

Making our mark on Week 2
We've had a fun week in Room 31. On Monday, Damien's dog: Tim Bit stopped by for our first furry friend visit of the year! We have learned so much about one another during our Summer Sharing! We have also worked in groups for a pipe-cleaner challenge as well as to brainstorm attributes we want to develop this year, started a math job, began BHS Reads, had our first library class, and held a class meeting for the first time.
Today, we celebrated "International Dot Day" (which is actually tomorrow) by reading Peter Reynolds' book "The Dot", doing a challenging math job, and even sneaking in an art job modelled after the work of Roy Liechtenstein.
The weather cooperated this morning for our first fire drill of the year. Patrols had 2 sessions of training this week and will be starting next week! It's nice to see some Room 31 students take on leadership jobs in our school!
Looking forward to meeting you at the Open House BBQ on Tuesday, September 18 from 5 to 6:30. Don't worry if you haven't pre-ordered food, you will still be able to buy during the BBQ!

And that's a wrap on our first week!
We have been so busy learning about one another and the classroom. I really like this time of the year because our classroom community is being created and new friendships are being formed!
We have done quite a few activities to talk and share as well as get into the routine of school again! And even snuck in our first art job!
I'm looking forward to our summer sharing activity next week . . . a schedule was sent home today.

Welcome to Room 31!
We had a whirlwind of a first day! It was so fun to meet all the Grade 4s and 5s this morning. We took first day pics, worked on name tags, had an assembly with our new principal: Mr. Altomare, went to music, started my favourite read-aloud: Wonder, tried out the Smartboard, and chose a "growth goal" to display on our cactus bulletin board.
I must admit, my voice is tired from talking all day!
Looking forward to the rest of the first week of school with you!
Ms. Wasney :)
