TWAS

We've had a very busy week to end the month of January. The students really enjoyed learning a new way of doing multiplication using distributive properties . . . which is getting them ready for algebra (believe it or not)! We started thinking about an European Explorer to research for Social Studies. Today, it was a fantastic Friday with Hot Lunch and Art ALL afternoon! We worked with Mrs. Kulyk to illustrate wooden tiles with the animal from our pourquoi tales. We had to paint in the style of Norval Morrisseau. The tiles look amazing and I can't wait to see the entire installation up in time for the 100th anniversary of BHS! Here's Brayden's TWAS for this week . . .

Brayden and his tile.

On Monday we had gym.  In gym we had to present our teams gymnastics routine for our test. The people on my team were Ted, Lucas and myself. We had to do some rolls like a log roll an egg roll and maybe a backwards roll. We also had to do some other stuff like a cartwheel and a teddy bear stand you could also extend your leg all the way up till you point to the ceiling then roll out.

The longest line: Heart Art
On Tuesday we had art. In art we had to do this thing called the longest line heart art. First we had to take out a sharpie and make some lines and not let it come off the paper. Once your done that you get a heart tracer and you trace the heart as many times as you like with a pencil then colour in the heart with two different colours in between the lines. Then you’re finished.

On Wednesday we had word work. In word work we had to find different words with the letters niretpecnoit. The big word was interception we took a long time to figure the word out but someone did. Ms. Wasney even gave us quite a few hints and we still did not get it for a while. I wish that I could find the big word once.

On Thursday we had book buddies. I read to my book buddy. I read to him a couple of books. I read a book from our classroom and a couple from his book bin. He also read a couple. I like reading to my book buddy.

Today in the afternoon we will have art the whole time. I like art, well I sure like it better than math.

The longest line: Heart Art

Check out the art on Artsonia!

Guess what? We just did the Longest line Heart Art! First we got a thick sharpie and piece of white paper. Then we took the thick sharpie and made a swirly line and we never took the sharpie off but we started on the edge of the paper and ended on the edge of the paper in a different spot. When we were done that we took heart tracers and traced around them in pencil on our page. Then we coloured them in, and traced around them in sharpie. Some of the circles had to be one colour and the other circles had to be a different colour and the two colours could not be beside each other. We only used two colours on each heart. But if we messed up we would do three colours. We tried to use Valentines Day colours. It was lots and lots of fun doing this kind of art.

TWAS

Chelsea and her City Skylines art!

On Monday we wrote more of our Pourquoi Tales for the first hour of the day. After recess we had music. After we got back from music we had math- working on multiplication. After lunch (because we did math until lunch). We had art- City Skylines. It was soooooooo much fun! I loved it! First, we had to take a strip of cardstock and trace little buildings with a ruler. Then, we took a black piece of construction paper and chalk pastels and we ‘brushed’ the pastel upwards over the cardstock to make little buildings. Then, we ‘smushed’ the pastel to make it look like the northern lights. Then we took a white pastel and made ‘windows’.  After last recess we read to self. We had a BONUS GYM CLASS WITH MRS. TRESOOR'S CLASS!!! We got the bonus gym class because our entire grade got no blue slips.

On Tuesday we had Pourquoi tale writing with Mrs. Augusta. It went on for an hour, but it felt like a thousand years. Some of us were getting really bored and were starting to fidget, and we had to stop because the bell rang for recess when Mrs. Augusta was in the middle of talking. After recess we worked on math- Arrays and multiplication. After lunch we had French. It also felt like an hour. After recess we had gym. It felt like FOREVER. After recess we had science, we learned about Force, Push and Pull. After science we had winter wonderland with Mrs. Tresoor’s class.

On Wednesday we had word work-astronauts and international. After recess we had more boring music. After we did some more math. After lunch we computer lab and we worked on math games. After last recess we had an hour of health-personal safety.

Gymnastics practice at lunch recess.
On Thursday we had math- correcting and arrays. We did this for about an hour, so after recess we had Gym and Girls had choir. After the girls got back we had Book Buddies. One of my buddies was away. L. After lunch we had an hour of French, where we played cards and memory. I was playing go fish with the memory cards with Hannah, and she was pretending to be a robot and while she was doing that I threw the cards at her gently so they landed in her lap. After last recess we were working on science.

Today, for the first hour of the day, well for the girls because the boys had boys choir the girls, right now are typing up TWAS and the boys just got back from choir. Later on we have science, read to self, gym and Pourquoi tale writing.

Writing with a purpose!

For the last week, we have been writing our own Pourquoi Tales. This is a school-wide project as part of the AAA program. Every class will publish a collection of Pourquoi Tales in a hardcover book. The books will be stored in the school library so that all students will have the opportunity to withdraw the books at any time. We will also be working with a local artist, Mrs. Kulyk, to create tiles to illustrate our writing. These tiles will be showcased in a permanent display in our school.

Today, I showed another awesome way we can write with a purpose . . . The Winnipeg Jets is once again holding their "Reading Takes Flight" contest. As a class, we will submit a letter explaining why OUR class should win the opportunity to welcome a Jets player to visit and read to us during "I Love to Read Month" (which is February). I have entered this contest twice before, and am crossing my fingers that the third time is the charm!

Day of Pink t-shirts

Today, order forms are being sent home for Day of Pink t-shirts.

The Day of Pink takes place on April 9th. It all started in 2007 when 2 high school students in Nova Scotia took a stand against bullying in their school. The students asked all of their peers to wear pink to school after they heard a male classmate had been bullied for wearing a pink shirt. The Day of Pink campaign brings together schools and communities throughout Canada to wear the shirt and stand together against bullying.

This year, at Bird's Hill School, staff, students, and families have the option of purchasing a t-shirt for $5.00. Order forms are being sent home today and are due back on Tuesday, January 28th.

Thanks for your support!

City Skylines

Check these out on Artsonia!
In our class we are working on an Art called City Skylines. This Art was very messy. The first step was to make a template that looked like buildings out of red paper. Then we took chalk pastels, a piece of black construction paper and our template. We had to take our template and put it on the black construction paper. We had to use any pastel and trace the template. Then we had to smoosh the pastels upwards. After that we took a white chalk pastel and made little windows so it looks like there are lights on. If you wanted you could add a moon at the top with white and yellow chalk pastels.
