Happy Halloween!

I just love Halloween! We had a great time decorating pumpkins that were donated to our school last week. The students came up with some really creative ideas! In the afternoon, we headed to the gym for the parade of costumes! Wow! What a turnout of families to check us all out! It was awesome to see the amazing costumes from students and teachers! We returned to the classroom and enjoyed some delicious treats from some very generous families! What a super day! I hope you all have a safe time trick-or-treating out there! Stay warm!

Month in Review

Month in Review
This month, I enjoyed doing art! We did thanksgiving leaves and autumn silhouettes and pumpkin decorating. I liked making the posters and raising money for UNICEF. We had a UNICEF assembly and we sang a UNICEF song. I liked Book Buddies because I like reading to my buddy. Sage is very cute! I liked when Ms. Wasney read us "Holes”, now, she’s reading a book called “Wonder”.

WE Day!

Woohoo! The show's about to start!
Yesterday, Mrs. Tresoor, Mrs. Dehn, and I were fortunate enough to take 27 Grade Six students down to the MTS Centre to participate in WE Day with 18 000 other students! It was an amazing event! WE Day is a concert to raise awareness for social justice concerns around the world. It is a kick-off for students to initiate local and global fundraising efforts within their schools to be carried out during the year. You can learn more about the presenters we saw by clicking HERE.

Last year, Mrs. Dent Scarcello had great participation in her "Me to We" club, and we want to carry on with that enthusiasm. We opened the club up to Grade 5 and 6 students with the understanding that, due to age restrictions, only Grade 6 and up can attend WE Day. Mrs. Tresoor and I were so impressed with the interest from the students, especially our Grade 5 students! We had so much excitement from the Grade 6s that we even had to request that they research a presenter that would be at WE Day Manitoba because we only had 27 tickets for students! Upon returning to the school today, several students wrote thoughtful reflections about their experience at WE Day.

Now, as a group of Grade 5s and 6s, we need to decide on a name for our club and a focus for our local and global fundraising initiatives. I can't wait to see what WE will accomplish this year!

Here's a video of the WE Day Dance, which we all have been practicing! Isn't the energy in the MTS Centre phenomenal?! Wow!

This day was inspirational, memorable, and so very special. I am both pleased and proud that I was able to participate!

TWAS

A surprise delivery of
pumpkins!
Today, many students are expressing how tired they are! I had to remind them that it is their first 5-day school week for the entire month of October! While we were working on our TWAS, Mrs. Dehn stopped by to ask for help carrying in over 80 pumpkins that were donated to our school! It was quite the surprise!

TWAS-Oct.26, 2012
This week at school we had a UNICEF assembly and we did a song. We kind of messed up at the beginning and started to get better through the song.  We had a video about what UNICEF is about and it was about 5 minutes I would say. So far bird’s hill school has raised $345. In the morning we have been keeping everyone updated on how we are doing on the announcements and I was the first day with Kyla. It isn’t that hard it was actually fun.
In math we had a large number quiz and it was pretty easy because we have been doing all the stuff during math periods anyways. Today we had our mental math paper where we had to write answers without writing it out to help. I was the first one done and Jack was about 5 seconds after. We also got our patrol membership card which is like a V.I.P pass that can let you go to the movies or wheelies and stuff like that. On Tuesday we had our bus evacuation and it was fun learning what to do if something ever happens. Grade 5’s couldn’t patrol them though but I can next year.
Book Brag Board . . . students
share about the books they're
reading to get their classmates
interested!
In ELA we learned about a book brag board. It’s a board where you write down a book and say what is so awesome about it. We have also been doing reading strategy’s that will help us for when we are reading. We just finished reading the book holes. It was a really good book. We also started to read a book called wonder. It is about a boy with a messed up face and is going to school. In science we did weather and climate and we need to put them into categories. We had Mrs. Malawski for that. We also had social studies and we learned about the land bridge. I finished after about 15 minutes. It was kind of hard.
For book buddies we taught the kids a owl poem and then helped them make a owl. Dylan’s owl was so cute. His owl had tiny eyes and wings that stuck up. It was so awesome how it turned out but I just put some claws on his feet.  In French I finished my personal sheet and it was hard finding the words though.
In gym we played Pac-man. There are puppets and you have to stay on the line without getting tagged. We also played sponge bob square pants and you have to get across bikini bottom without getting tagged and I was Patrick. We also had choir and it was fun. We have super singers and I was one of them and I got a nib. It was a great week.

Hoo, Hoo! A fun owl activity with our Book Buddies!

Kyla and her Book Buddy, Samantha!
Today Thursday October 25th 2012 we had book buddies . I really like book buddies they are younger cuter and really nice. my book buddy is Samantha she is really nice she is also really good at reading.  We did an owl craft and an owl poem that was cute and was really fun. She cut out the owl body the wings beak eyes and the feet. I trimmed the little parts that she missed and the toes that were supposed to be on the feet but otherwise she did awesome on her own! She glued the eyes on, then the beak, wings, and feet. She chose to do the wings up ward instead of down. We both agreed it looked cutest that way. Then she did the dots on the eyes. She did them small dots at first looked at them and then made them bigger.  She flipped then put her name on the back she has really neat and good printing too! We finished off book buddy time with reading books to each other. We read “bingo comes to school” and “fun jobs” I really like book buddies they are fun cause they can teach you as much or even more of what you teach them.

UNICEF Assembly!

Today, we hosted an assembly to kick-off the UNICEF campaign at BHS. Nathan and Kaylee welcomed classes to the assembly, then we sang a song with help from Mrs. Tresoor's class. It was to the tune of Queen's song "We Will Rock You", except the words were changed! Then, Carly and Jack shared some information about UNICEF and Nicholas and Ryan introduced a short video that we watched. Finally, Nick and Lindsay thanked everyone for coming to the assembly! I think it was a fun way to get the school excited about UNICEF!

Unfortunately, my camera did not work well during the assembly, so I was unable to take a video of the Grade 5s singing the awesome song! However, when we returned to the classroom, I had Room 31 students sing the song one last time and was able to get a video. Here it is (just imagine more kids singing, in front of the whole school, in the gym!):

TWAS

The new attendance on the
SMARTBoard!
Wow! Another 4 day week for students! Tomorrow, all teachers across the province are participating in professional development in-services of their choice.

This week, I was proud to introduce the UNICEF campaign to the students. For the last few years, my class has been in charge of UNICEF for BHS. Last year, the school raised $2500! Amazing! We were even one of the top 5 schools in Manitoba for fundraising! We have been practicing a song that we will be singing at the assembly that we are hosting on Monday, October 22nd. The song is super catchy . . . guaranteed to stick in your head for a few days! We will also be sharing information about UNICEF and watching a short video during the assembly.

T.W.A.S Oct. 18,2012

This week at school we did gym. In gym we did Great Wall of China. It’s a really fun game, it’s about a person goes in the middle and you half to run to the other side of the gym.
This is a really fun thing and we are in charge of it. It’s called UNICEF and it’s on Halloween. On Monday we are doing an assembly. We are also doing a song to go with it, it’s we will rock you but in a different version.
In S.S we are learning about the past. Also about archaeologists. It’s a little hard, we half to use a text book. In math we are doing large numbers place value flip card and large number word problem. We half to do a math quiz on Wednesday.
We also have book buddies at the end of the day today. They are coming to our classroom.
We also had French. French was fun. We did part 2 of our art job. Part 1 was really fun but part 2 was hard. We made autumn silhouettes out of construction paper. We did science. We did weather in our community.  We did library and we got to name the pugs for our classes. We also did writing strategy. In writing strategy we learned C.U.P.S. it stands for capitalization, Understanding , punctuation, and spelling.
We also did vision and hearing testing. We only did vision. We are maybe going to do hearing today.

Autumn Silhouettes

Last year, I admired this artwork that the Grade 5s created with Mrs. Tresoor and Mrs. Dent Scarcello, so I was super excited when Mrs. Tresoor suggested we try it this year! I absolutely LOVE how they turned out! Each piece of art is so unique, beautiful, and a bit spooky! Check out the video (I couldn't resist the fun music with Halloween on the way):

The artwork is up on Artsonia . . . be sure to take a peek!

In gym we played dodge ball and ship the shore and it was awesome playing the games.
In music we were singing Halloween and thanksgiving songs and the Halloween song was cool and the thanks giving one too.
And in French we were playing a bingo game and jack won 4 games but the teacher only let jack get two candies. And French was awesome.

Book Buddies!

Today, we started a very special tradition - Book Buddies with Mrs. Turner's Grade One students! We are hoping to meet once a week to read and work on special activities. This was super neat because many of the Grade Five students remember being in Grade One and having an older buddy!

Leave a comment and share with us what your favourite part of meeting your Book Buddy for the first time today was!

Book Buddies

Today we had   book buddies and I thought it was cool! It was fun to hang out with different people and make new friends! They were good at reading even though they had very soft voices. They were so cute and so nice!

They are in grade 1 and in Mrs. Turner’s class. I went out in the hall with my buddy Morgan, but some stayed inside the room. I knew Morgan from the Y program, so we got along really well.
It was a good experience to have book buddies. And it was so fun! I bet it will be the same much fun the next time to!

Summer Sharing!

In August, I sent home a postcard and a short note about Summer Sharing. Students were asked to bring in 5 things to share about their summer. Last week, we finally had a chance to hear about the fun activities all of us did over the summer! Wow! Quite a few students visited the United States . . . I'm surprised that no one randomly ran into one another! I liked seeing all the original items the students brought in to showcase their summer holidays.
