Marble Runs!

$TEP RIGHT UP TO TRY THE NEW MARBLE RUN!!! ONLY 0 doller$ AND 0 CENT$!
it'$ made out of...cardboard, $tring, and the top of a water bottle.
it I$ pulled by gravity.
criteria: the marble I$ not touched by me, it ha$ to change $peed and direction.
It use$ linear motion. It is balanced because it'$ not falling over!
I would give my project a 4 1/2 out of 5 $tar$.

Science Design: Rain Gauges

Today we finished our science design. We made rain gauges. This is stuff you need to make the rain gauge me (Faith), Emma and Jordan used: a jar, ruler, screws, sharpie and hot glue. Here’s how you make it: cut the ruler so it can fit up and down on the jar. Glue that on with hot glue. Then take your screws and put sharpie dots on the bottom of you jar where you want your screws. Then glue your screws on. Now if you want you can decorate the jar. Then you are done! Just stick it in the ground and wait for it to rain. I really like how ours turned out! You should try it at home!

Marble Runs!

We have had a great time designing and building our Marble Runs for our science design projects! We shared our projects with Mrs. Dyck's Grade 5s and checked out theirs as well! What I love best is that no two projects are ever the same! It's so cool! Here's Michael's review of the project from his Kidblog account:

Hi, today I will be telling you about my science design, how I made it and a bunch of different stuff so to start off I will talk about some of the criteria.
1. set a marble in motion
2. make the marble change direction/speed
3. make the marble come to a controlled stop
next I will tell you what materials I used, I used a cracker box, toilet paper roll, duct tape, masking tape and boxing tape, I also used a chicken fingers box. now I will tell you what was the hardest part and easiest part were, so the easiest part for me was designing it but the hardest part was getting everything too work but in the end it all turned out. now I will tell you what I would do differently next time, I would make my project more complex so that it would be longer and look bigger and be awesome. if I had to rate this project I would give it a four and a half, because it worked well but I could have made it better. thanks for reading please leave a comment by: Michael

Introducing our next Science Design Project!

It's my favourite time of the year . . . SCIENCE DESIGN! This one has to be the best one of Grade 5! Students will have to create a marble run either on their own, or with a partner. To get inspired, I love showing the video of Caine's Arcade. A young boy designed and created a whole arcade out of cardboard! His imagination and enthusiasm is contagious!

Hope you enjoy it!

Science Design Project: Weather Vanes

In the last few weeks we have been working on and finishing weather vanes for science. For the design project we were working in groups. All groups have been working really hard to get these finished. All weather vanes are now tested and finished. The criteria we needed to follow were:
  • The weather vane indicates four cardinal wind direction (N,E,S,W)
  • Must be able to withstand two different wind speeds Low and high
  • Must be reliable during numerous tests
  • Uses only the materials provided
  • Design should promote the sky diving co.
  • The log book should be neat and have all questions completed

We thought it was so-so because we were working in groups and it was hard sometimes to work together.

We had a good time making these weather vanes!!!!

Science Design!

Last week, we finished our science design projects and tested them out on a hot and sunny day! The students had to create and build a "sun protection system" with ONLY newspaper and tape! I loved that each and every design was different! Enjoy the video below!

Here is Coen's post from Kidblog:

So in Science Design we made hats and helmets out of ONLY newspapers and tape. I worked with Dylan. We were supposed to make the exact same hat, but my visor fell over and became a mouthpiece.
We were done in about two or maybe three days.  Ours stayed on perfectly when we tested them. I think we did really good!

Field Trip to the Manitoba Museum!

On Tuesday, May 10, we went to the Manitoba Museum for a field trip. The first place where we went was the planetarium. Our host’s name was Hilary. We saw a planetarium lightshow and learned different things about light. After that we got to make a kaleidoscope. To make a kaleidoscope you need to tape 3 mirrors together in a triangle and then you need to put the mirrors in a toilet paper roll (that is the same length as the mirrors) and tape them in (taping the sides). When you are done you can decorate it if you want to! After we made a kaleidoscope we went and ate lunch.

After lunch we had a whole hour in the science gallery. There are lots of very fun things to do. The mirror room was cool but it could have been bigger. The pulley chairs were great but we wish they were more like harnesses. We also liked the tornado made out of water, air. There was also a talk and listen machine. You talk into it and whoever is at the other side of the room can hear you. After the time in the science gallery we got on the bus and came back to school.

EPIC DESIGN PROJECT OF SCIENCE AND CREATIVITY!!!!!!!

One day we had science but something that the title already gave away had happened and we were never the same, WE GOT TO DO DESIGN PROJECTS!!! Oonce, oonce oonce oonce. Sorry, got carried away there but now it’s back to normal so, two people are making this post but only Carter gets to type because I was here first but brogan will be help’n me out on this by com’n up with some ideas. The grade 4 students mak’n a bacon pancake, I was just kidding instead the grade 4s are making an instrument and the grade5s are making a marble run.

CRITERIA.

The criteria for both projects will be listed here.

Grade 4 criteria:

-Instrument must have a minimum of 2 pitches.

-volume must be adjustable.

-must be made out of recyclable materials, tape and can have hot glue.

Grade 5 criteria:

-Marble must start on it’s own once placed.

-Marble must change speed at least once.

-Marble run must be made out of the same materials the grade 4s used.

-Marble must come to a controlled stop.

Thanks for reading, please leave a comment and stay tuned for the next post!!!

We just want to say that this project was sort of difficult and very, very fun. We would rate this project 4 ½ - 5 (four and a half out of five) stars.

Caine's Arcade

Science Design . . . aka: The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

This time of the year has to be one of my favourites about being a teacher. I absolutely love watching the creativity and perseverance of students when they are designing and building their projects. For Term 2, the Grade 4s are creating musical instruments and the Grade 5s are making marble runs. The trick is that the projects have to be built with recyclable materials . . . everyday items that can be found in the recycling box! The video I showed today was PERFECT! It was filmed in 2012, and it's about a 9 year old boy that creates an entire arcade out of cardboard boxes. Amazing, right?! I hope you enjoy the video as much as I do . . . .

May you all have the imagination, patience, and creativity as Caine one day!  :)

A Happy TWAS!

We had a great week at school. We learned the "old-school" way of doing multiplication . . . and the students seemed to LOVE it! Ha! Our science units are pretty fun right now! The Grade 4s have been doing some experiments for sound. Check out this commercial that is all about kinetic and potential energy. It's geared for the Grade 5s, but everyone loved it!

Here's Aidan's TWAS that he worked on for Kidblog this morning:

On Monday we had gym. I forgot what we did but I do know that Ms. Rand was not feeling good. We also had a morning meeting. We all shared about our weekend. I had lots of sleepovers.

On Tuesday we made a tic-tac-toe game for our book buddies. It was a heart game board. We also had math. We did algorithms.

On Wednesday we had a writing job. it was about a glowing ball in a dogs mouth or was it a ball. We also had book buddies. We got to play the game we made for them!

On Thursday we had the worlds worst gym class #it sucked. We also went to the WSO. Sadly it was just the grade 5ers.

And now the moment you have been waiting for the one and only FRIDAY. Are you ready (say yes) good. Friday is... NOW. On Friday we had a assembly. it was cool because me and Max got to do the announcements. We will have our valentine party. It well be awesome. I know it.

Science Design

I absolutely LOVE teaching science . . . especially when it's science design project time! This one was no exception! It's so cool to see the imagination and creativity of students. This one was a challenge - they could only use tape and newspaper to create a "sun protection system". Wow! We had lots of variety in the projects!

The students have shared their experience on our Kidblog account. Read their write-ups by clicking HERE. This is Matt's review of the project . . .

Well for the past few days our class has been working on an Awesome Science Project.

It was so fun to do and some of us had partners and I did have one and that was Brett. First we started with drawing out what we wanted to protect us from the sun. We decided that we were going to make a tent. At first our tent started of as a dome on the paper than we started to work on it. When we had a little bit done we thought that the dome would not stand so we change our idea to make the tent rectangular. When we had that idea done we started to do the rectangular tent. Oh a I forgot to tell you that we were only allowed to use Masking tape and newspaper. Brett and I started to do it and it took a long time to get the base done but when it was we double checked it to see if it was strong enough to hold the rest off the tent. We had to add one more thing and we were ready to start making the base for the walls. When we started that we said that there is no way we are going to finish on time so I worked on one side and Brett worked on the other. And by the way that made it go a lot faster.

When we were done the base for the walls we started on the roof. The roof was the hardest because we had to make sure it was nice and Strong but also really lite so it didn't bring the whole thing down. When we finally finished the top we got to started wrapping it with newspaper. That did not take that long but it took a bit. When we finally finished that we were done.

The next Day in the second period we got to go out and test them. Ours was pretty much destroyed because it barely fit out the door. We had to do a few touch ups and than we went in it and it did protect us from the sun. When Ms. Wasney took the picture it was time for the fun. And if you don't no what the fun is, well it was destroying it.

And that was the end of our science design. I rate this 5 out of 5 stars.

Manitoba Museum on a Monday!

On Monday, May 25, our class and the other class went to the Manitoba Museum. We went there to learn about the fur trade (social studies) and units in science. We got there and put our stuff in a big pull-out closet. Then we went our separate ways.

Our class first went to the Science Gallery. In the Science Gallery, there were pulley chairs you sat on the chair and pulled yourself up. Once you got to the top you let go of the rope and went down slowly. The yellow was the easiest the blue was medium and the red was the hardest. After about an hour we went into a room and did a lot of experiments. We did a lever, pulley, force, gravity spin. The force one was super cool because Brett in our class filled up the water in 4 cups. The lady had a tray with strings she put the cups in the middle and spun the tray around her head. The water stayed in the cup when she stopped spinning the tray, the water went everywhere!

We went for lunch. After that we headed up to the main museum to learn about the fur trade. We went in two groups. We learned about all different things. In one part there were cool things in a box like fur, snow shoes, dried up meat, tin cans, an axe, and more. We had free time we went on a boat which was a replica of the Nonsuch. We wish we had more time to do things. We had to wait for the other class and the grade 3’s. This field trip is worth five out of five stars.

Term 2 Science Design Project: Marble Runner

This week in science we have been working hard on our projects. We had to meet this criteria: it had to turn in some way, you could not touch the marble to get it going, it had to come to a complete stop, it also had to change speed. We had to only use recyclable material.

Every time we went to the art room we got lots done. When we were almost finished the other class was just starting. When we finished we had to work on our log books. The log books were one of the hardest things for some people. At the end no two projects were the same, and all of them looked really really cool.

We rate these project five out of five stars (sponsored by coca colaJ)

Caine's Arcade

It's that time of the year when the Grade 5s are busy with science design project! In Term 2, we focus on forces and motion and simple machines. This particular design project is my favourite of the whole year! Students have to use recyclable materials to create a marble run. The marble has to change directions, speeds, and come to a controlled stop. It's amazing what the students come up with! No 2 projects are ever the same!

This video is about an inspiring 9 year-old. I love sharing this with the students at this time of the year. May we all have an unstoppable imagination and never-ending determination like Caine!  :)

Science Design Project: weather vane

In the past few days for science we have been doing a project. The project is called a weather vane. A weather vane is something that tells what way the wind is going. The directions are south, north, east and west. The materials we had to use are: a wooden dowel, one meter of masking tape, plasticine, four straight pins, a ruler, four straws, manila tag paper scissors, markers and a pencil.

This project had to follow this criteria:
- The weather vane indicates four cardinal wind directions
- Must be able to withstand two different wind speeds
- Uses only the materials provided
- Design should promote the skydiving company
- The logbook should be neat and have all questions completed

One of the projects that a group built was a thing where there is an arrow in the middle of the wooden dowel and that’s the main part of the weather vane. We had to make up a name at every table group and the name of the table group we just talked about is called Wind Storm. Another table group named theirs was named The Air Traffic Control 500.

We give this project a 5/5 in stars. We say its five out of five because it was easy to work in a group of four and five people.
