Outdoor Classroom Day!

All month long, we have been doing David Suzuki's 30x30 Nature Challenge; where we try to spend at least 30 minutes a day outside of our classroom. Lucky for us, the weather has been cooperating!

Today is "Outdoor Classroom Day" and more than one million students from all over the world are getting involved! We walked down to the pits (a round trip of 4km) and did a "paint swatch scavenger hunt". It was so much fun! We even saw some baby goslings, 2 turtles, and lots of birds, geese, and ducks! We then stopped at Memorial Park on Bird's Hill Road for snack and free time!

It was a fantastic morning!

A week full of NATURE!

It was a beautiful week for the 30x30 Nature Challenge! We managed to get outside every single day! We even ate lunch outside today. We did lots of science, division, poetry, and finished off an art job this week! All of these pictures are from our class instagram account. You should follow us at: @mswasneysclass
Here's Carson's TWAS from his Kidblog account:

Hi guys today I will tell you about my week but I will update you on everything I do outside since we are doing the 30x30 nature challenge.
Monday,
We got new spots and I made the seating plan ( and a few others) but anyway I am seating with Braden, Nicole and Dylan. This is good because this is the first time siting with a girl ether then Jace. We also had a Music Monday assembly, it was so lit because we played the songs that got us a gold medal in are WSO concert and after the songs we got a big appreciation from the rest of our school. Outside We did the Respiratory system and we had to count our breath and stuff like that.
Tuesday,
In science we started the muscular system and their  were lots of activities to do, first we had to hold a book straight out and it was so hard, then the next activity was a wall sit it was the best one, everyone got around minute but me Brogan, Jace and Carter W stayed up in-between  two minutes and Four and a half minutes. We also had gym, in gym we did basketball, it was so boring but after we got to play a game but we could NOT pass, it was so weird but it was still a game. Outside we went outside with our book buddies but I'm in focus group so I practiced for our new video

Wednesday,
We had art step 4 and for it we finally got to do the fabric part and we had to make circles with fabric, it was so fun but it was hard to cut the circles. We also had music, in music we had Mr. M (Mrs. Knolls husband) was in and we math music bingo it was so dumb because you would have to sing it the get a point. Outside we did division and it was the starting of our division subject.
Thursday,
We had outdoor gym and its so fun since Ms. Rand wasn't here and we played soccer the whole time. It was girls vs boys and it wasn't really fair since we won 5-0 and it was a great time and I got so close to letting a goal but I dove and it just hit my hand and hit the post then I got up and Kate was taking a shot I just went to the side and finally got a hold of it I booted it and we scored!!!!!!!!! We also did the nervous system and its so cool how you control your right side of body with the left side of your brain and the opposite for the right side. Outside we did acrostic poems, it is almost like a name poem
Friday,
We did a ABC poem and it so easy but I cant explain how hard it was. I got stuck for so long but I got a rhythm and it was so fun but I had to leave early because of focus group, one of mine is......
At
Baseball
Carson
Dived
Enthusiastically
For
Georges
Home Run

Yeah it took a long time, I hope that now you know what it is. We also had gym, in gym we did basketball and we practiced our dribbling and in the game we got to dribble and the teams were so unfair but my team won still( because Michael wasn't trying.) At the end of gym madlynne looked like she was hurt, it looks like she will be ok. Outside we did a division math sheet, its so easy but we have to do remainders and its hard to get used to.

A "Wacky" TWAS!

30x30 on Wednesday
We had a fun week kicking off the 30x30 Nature Challenge, working on Mother's Day things, and ending the week with a school-wide wacky day. BHS students have been earning puppy paws for being safe, respectful, and responsible. The puppy paws have been posted along the hallways and we recently reached our 2nd bulldog. Our school looked pretty wacky today!

Here is Katrina's TWAS from her most recent Kidblog post:

Heeeeeeeeeey, guys! Guess what time it is, TWAS TIME!!!
Monday, Today it was the start of a new month (may) so you know what that means. New spots and name tags! I am sitting by My friend Max and also sitting by Xavier. Pretty good I guess! We also had a 30x30 challenge. (SO. MUCH. FUN.) And we did read to self. I read a book called amulet.
Tuesday. We had computer lab and I worked on my social study's because last month peaceful girl named Katrina was working on her social study's project an she was almost finished and then... BOOM! Her computer died on her and none of her work saved so she had to restart. Sad story. Right? Anyway, back to TWAS. We also had gym and we practiced badminton with balloons and then once we were ready, we could use birdy's.
Robert Andrews visit on Thursday!
Wednesday. Today we got to do a 30x30 challenge again and we did our mothers day envelopes and I sat beside Max and Carter grace and then she started making this weird Texas comedian voice and then I stated saying: "Well that's on Fleek"!!!! So yeah. We also had French, and, it was rough.
Thursday. We had a super cool thing that happened and it was called a Robert Andrews band presentation. They played music with... CHAIRS. CAN YOU BELEVE IT. ( okay maybe you can because you saw it) It was SUPER... DUPER... COOOOOOOL! I want to try that! We also had book buddies and we played out side the whole time! Thank you Ms. Wasney for letting us do the 30x30 challenge!
Friday. Wacky day! Today was Wacky day! I wore like, five billion braids and when I took my hair out and it was all curly. I also wore a cowboy hat. Awesome. And then for our 30x30 we did a word search and then we played on the play structure after.

30x30 Nature Challenge

Last year, Room 31 participated in David Suzuki Foundation's "30x30 Nature Challenge", which encourages people of all ages to get outside and enjoy nature for an extra 30 minutes each day for the month of May! You can find out more about this challenge by clicking HERE.There are neat “daily tips” that can help you with some ideas for activities outside!

Day 1 - Read to Self
We will be participating in the challenge each day at school  . . . it might be simply taking our work outside of the classroom, getting active, or appreciating our surroundings. All Room 31 students are responsible for finding ways to be outside on the weekends!

Looking forward to a fun month of May, and hoping the weather cooperates!

Take a pic = give shoes

Today, as part of our 30x30 Nature Challenge, we headed out and took a picture of our bare feet! The shoe company, Toms, is known for giving a pair of shoes to someone in need with every purchase.

They have a promotion (until May 21) on Instagram that if you post a picture with #withoutshoes, they will donate a pair to a child in need. You can read more about it HERE.

It was fun to feel nature beneath our feet!  :)

30x30 Nature Challenge: Review

I think I like the 30 by 30 Nature Challenge. It’s kind of difficult because it’s getting cold, windy and only sometimes it’s nice out. Most of the time I go for walks with my dog or if it’s really nice out I’ll go on the trampoline. This Thursday was rainy so we couldn’t go outside, but only in the afternoon it was not rainy and really cold.

I totally forgot to fill my sheet out for how many minutes I went outside for but I went outside for at least 20 or 25 minutes a day. I’ll try to remember what I did then I will try to fill it out!

I think this 30 by 30 challenge is rated 4/5 stars in the cold weather and 5/5 in the warm weather!

Monday - field trip reflection!

Tuesday - Mother's Day envelopes!

Wednesday - Math & envelopes!

Friday - a chilly read-aloud!
