I first heard about the organization when I went out to Oak Hammock Marsh to see a snowy owl released earlier in February, after being in care since November.

Dog House Canteen is back for October!

October Staff: Evan, Maxim, Ben,
Chantal, and Haylee!
When the girls from the canteen were awarded the Young Humanitarian Award from the Manitoba Teacher’s Society in May 2017, the canteen received $1000. A large portion of that was donated to “Give Kids the World Village” in Florida. We also had a professional sign made up by local artists “The Travelling Sign Painters”.

The Dog House Canteen will continue to run every 2nd month, beginning in October. This year, we will have a variety of Grade 5 students work the canteen each month. Students signed up in Grade 4 for Leadership jobs for the 2017-2018 school year.

All items will be $1.00, with the exception of Menchie’s frozen yogurt, which will be $2.00, sold on the last day of each week.

For October, we will be open on the following days:

Wednesday-October 4, Friday-October 6,
Tuesday-October 10, Wednesday-October 11, Friday-October 13,
Monday-October 16, Wednesday-October 18, Thursday-October 19,
Monday-October 23, Friday-October 27

Dog House Canteen news!

Today at our year-end assembly, the Dog House Canteen girls were called up to receive the Young Humanitarian Award from MTS vice president, James Bedford. It was so nice to be able to share this with the BHS community! The girls received medals, and the school received a framed certificate. We will hopefully display it right beside the canteen!

Thanks for your support this year. The Dog House Canteen will be up and running during the 2017-2018 school year. Stay tuned!

Dog House Canteen update!

On February 3, the Dog House Canteen girls and I were invited to tour the Ronald McDonald House. Yesterday, the girls shared about the experience at an assembly. Here's their script that they wrote and read:

Hi, our names are Carter, Isabella, Livia, Katie, and Kenzie. And we are from the Dog House canteen! We are excited to share about our experience at the Ronald McDonald house. The reason we got the opportunity to take a tour there is because of your support in the month of October. Does anyone know what the Ronald McDonald house is for?
We got to meet an amazing little girl named Joy, she was born with a complication called cystic hygroma. It’s a growth on her chin to make it hard to swallow, eat and breathe. She has been staying at the Ronald McDonald house since she was born which is almost 2 years ago! They have celebrated her first steps, Christmas, Halloween, Easter, thanksgiving, valentine’s day and more. Every day she is there she is getting better and better! Your teacher can show you a video so that you can learn more about her!
Some facts we learned were:
-The number of families that stay at the Ronald McDonald house and family room in 2016:733
-The total of nights of comfort and accommodation provided by Ronald McDonald house: 5 600
- All services for families at Ronald McDonald house family room are free.
Guess what? We also got to walk over to the Health Sciences Centre to tour the Ronald McDonald family room! It was just like a house. We got to go in one of the three rooms to see what the rooms looked like. The family room is used for when children are very ill and their parents don’t want to leave the hospital. Thank you so much for being such a respectful audience and supporting the canteen!

School's out!

Today, we had a recognition assembly. I was able to brag about my Peacemakers and the SPIN Club members! And the girls from the Dog House Canteen revealed how much was donated to the Canadian Red Cross. A whopping $1205.95 has been sent in support of relief efforts for the fires in Fort McMurray.

This afternoon we had our Hawaiian-themed party. Thanks to Rebecca and her family for suggesting such a fun idea! Rebecca also brought in leis for everyone in our class! We had so many adorably delicious treats too! Thanks families!

Thanks for a great year! I know the world holds great things for you all! Please keep us posted with your summer adventures through Kidblog. The student accounts will continue to be active until mid-August.

Try to cross off a few things on the "summer to do list"! I know I'm going to try my best! Ha!

The Dog House Canteen!

Today was the grand opening of "The Dog House" Canteen! And it was a HUGE hit; complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony! (Way too cute!) The line up of customers was way down the hallway! I'm so proud of the initiative of some Grade 4 girls to re-open the canteen. The girls have decided that all proceeds will be donated to relief efforts for Fort McMurray. Wow! This is one of the reasons I love teaching . . . this day will be remembered by many and will inspire others to take a risk and try something new. I feel so lucky to be the teacher to help out with this venture!

Thank you to Carter Grace, Isabella, Kate, Katie, Livia, Mackenzie, and Rhyann for your dedication, organization, and of course, enthusiasm for taking this on!
