Winter Olympic Activity Day!

Today was such a fun day! We had our Winter Olympic Activity Day, thanks to the planning by Mrs. Rand and a small committee of teachers. Unfortunately because of the weather, we were forced to stay inside, but we still managed to visit 12 different stations throughout the day! We started off the morning with a parade of flags and opening ceremonies - with the lighting of the Olympic torch and raising of the Olympic flag. The grade fives were excellent leaders with our Kindergarten buddies from Mrs. Henry's class.

Hope you enjoy the video!

Winter is HERE!

Wow! Winter has arrived! It's only Wednesday, and the buses have been cancelled for 2 days already this week!

Just a reminder to be sure to dress for the blustery weather . . . especially since we will be going outside for phys ed classes for cross-country skiing!

Activity Day!

Today we had Field Day it was awesome. One of the reasons why it was awesome was because in the morning we got to run station, which was really fun. A few of the stations were baseball throw and another one was hockey shootout. They both were awesome. And one of the wet ones was water balloon catch and if you squeeze it, you get wet a lot. And another one we did was one of our favourites and it is baseball hit. How you do that one is all you have is a sponge ball and a sponge bat and then you put the ball on a cone and you try and hit the ball. But Dobie and Liam did not want a cone so we got him to pitch to us. Then once I went I got the record but when Dobie went he had to get the record I hope they beat it. That was about it for the morning but there was more activities but it would take super long to finish.

Now the Afternoon…
After lunch we got to play the stations but some people got to run a station and who it was is Dobie, Liam and Andrew. But half way through we ditched Andrew and went to play stations. But we did not use cards they used balloons till a kid popped them. Each station Liam and Dobie did not leave till we got gold. But one of the stations was baseball throw and it was really hard. Because they were softballs not hardballs. But Dobie’s brother was running that station and we both asked him if he can give us gold for free but he didn’t let us which really sucked. And Dobie and I wanted a drink before the stations open and we got one and the cool thing is that we were supposed only get 3 drinks but we got 4. And the best station was the water ones we got soaked! My favourite one was the water balloons and I probably got the most wet at that station because Dobie whipped a water balloon at me and then I punched it then splashed so much water on me. One other station I really liked was a Frisbee game where you dumped water on your head. But the idea of the game is to get water on a Frisbee and dump it in to a bucket and at the end you dump it on to your head and you would get soaked. Another one of the water station was bobbing for balls and then at the end you get to dunk your head in the bucket of water. Then after me and Liam finished doing some stations I went back to help Andrew with the station but Liam didn’t he just went somewhere else. And after we were done field day we got to eat popsicles they were really good.

The curling game of the year: Legends on Ice VS Staff

Well, it was the day many of us have been waiting for! The curling game of the year . . . at BHS, anyways! Ha! A team of Grade 4s versed a team of Staff (Mrs. Daraska, Mr. Hargreaves, Mrs. Henry, and Mrs. Knoll). And a team of Grade 5s (all from 5W . . . Dobie, Jason, Liam, and Matt P) versed Mrs. Dent Scarcello, Ms. Dodds, Mrs, Tresoor, and me! The ice was fast, the cheers were loud, and the enthusiasm was contagious!

Thanks to Mr. Hargreaves and Mrs. Rand for making and maintaining an amazing curling rink for all the students of BHS!

I have not curled since I was in elementary school, and it was with "jam pails"! I think I created a new technique . . . the penguin sprawl! Ha!

It was so much fun! Thanks for all the awesome signs, cheers, and high fives!

Registration forms were sent home today about the Art Club and Mad Science. Both clubs take place before school, starting in April. Registration and payment is due on April 8th. I'm hoping the keen kids of Room 31 think about joining!

As well, I am pleased to see SO many students signed up for mini handball and basketball! It's so great to see everyone get involved here at BHS! Way to go!    :)

Flag Football Tournament

ON THURSDAY GRADE 5S AND 6S WENT TO EAST SIDE EAGLE’S FOOTBALL FIELD TO PLAY FLAG FOOTBALL. WE ALL HAD DIFFERENT TEAM NAMES AND THEY WERE….LIONS, MRS.RAND WAS THEIR COACH, CHARGERS, MR.KUSyK WAS THEIR COACH, RAIDERS, MISS WASNEY AND MRS.GODFREDSEN Were THEIR COACHES. ALL OF THE BIRD’S HILL TEAMS WERE UNDEFEATED. YAY BIRD’S HILL!!!! WE PLAYED AGAINST A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT SCHOOLS.

WE MET 2 WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBER PLAYERS NAMED CHRIS MATTHEWS AND AARON WOODS. SOME PEOPLE GOT AUTOGRAPHS OR PICTURES WITH THEM TOO.

HOW TO PLAY FLAG FOOTBALL IS ONE TEAM HAS THE BALL AND WHEN THE QUARTER BACK SAYS HUT AND THEY PASS THE BALL TO SOMEONE WHO IS OPEN TO TRY TO GET A TOUCHDOWN A TOUCHDOWN IS WORTH SEVEN POINTS. WHEN THE OTHER TEAM PULLS YOUR FLAG, THE PLAY IS STOPPED.

It was a great day!

Field Day!

Memphis’s point of view-
My favourite station was the water balloon station. Me, Reagan, and Faith were partners.
We passed the water balloon around in a triangle and it broke and splashed all over Faith! Me and Reagan ran the “Scoop It” station. We had lots of customers. This field day was SUPER FUNJ!
Maddy’s point of View-
My favourite station was water balloon station. Brooklyn and I were partners. We passed the water balloon to each other and it popped on me (Maddy). Brooklyn and I ran the “Soft Ball Throw”.J
Reagan’s Point of View-
So… my favourite part of field day was running the station with Memmy and being next to Renee and Faith. I, as you already know, ran the Scoop it station.
My favourite station however was the juice station, but since it wasn’t an activity, my favourite one other than that was Water Relay, cause I got wet. We saved our cups so we could have 3 instead of two, which was totally worth it.

Mini Handball Tournament

Today at 11:30 we got on the bus to go to the handball tournament. When we got there we split into our teams and talked about the transitioning. I was part of team A. I was part of team B. First we played against Lord Wolsely first. We won 6-4. First we watched their game then we played Lord Wolsely. We won 7-4. The second team we faced was Polson. We won 7-3. The second team we faced we won 8-4. Then we had a break. After that we played each other. It was a really close game. It was tied 6-6 but with 5 seconds Riley scored to make it 7-6. Then we played Polson we beat them 7-2. I scored 2 goals. We had a break while they played. We played Bernie Wolf and sadly lost 9-2. They were the only team that we lost to. We played the other Bernie Wolf team and we didn’t lose as bad as Michael’s team but we still lost L 7-4. Then after we got all our stuff ready and we left.

Gymnastics Club!

Lindsay, Amanda, and Brooklyn
showing off a handstand!
The gymnasts have been practicing routines, skills, and a warm up for the upcoming tumbling rally before school since January! The warm up is a song written and sung by Katy Perry called Firework and our creative routine is by One Direction called One Thing. Mrs. Ilchena made up the creative routine.
These are the skills that we learned they went by different levels. Level 1 forward roll tuck and you show teacher the skill and if its good them you get a check mark and then when you get the whole level 1 done then you move on to the next level of the skill. There are three levels for each skill.
There were also optional skills like the splits and a back handspring. They are really hard but Amanda can do them all easily. To do the optional skills, you have to stay in at certain recesses to be approved by Ms. Rand or Mrs. Ilchena.
Here is part of the creative routine,
shared during the assembly.
Today at school we showed the grade 1s, 2s and 3s our routine before the grade 4s, 5s and 6s. We only showed the grade 1s, 2s and 3s some of the skills and showed none of them to the grade 4s, 5s and 6s because there was no time so we only showed the routine and the warm up.
On Thursday we are going to the Kildonan East School Gym. The reason we are going to the school is to see where to go because we are going that evening for the real tumbling rally to perform for parents, grandparents, and the whole family.

Crazy for Curling!

For gym we had curling because there was a star dome in the gym. The rink was wet looking even though it was solid. It was so slippery that Mrs. Rand almost fell!
The boys went on the far side, and the girls went on the close side. We put the rocks in the snow so they could cool down because they were warm from being in a hot room. If we didn’t put them in the snow they would crack the ice.
We got to pretend to practice shooting the rocks and sliding on our tummies! It was fun sliding on our stomachs!
Then we got are rocks and the girls tried to shoot them closest to the button. The first time only 1 girl got past the hog line. Then the boys went. Most of them got past the line! Then we went over and over again! It was AWESOME!!!J
