Spirit Week and Surprise Sundaes!

This week was super fun in Room 31. It was awesome to see so many students participate in our "spur of the moment" Spirit Week! We managed a quick art job when Ms. Koehn stopped by for a visit on Tuesday. Wednesday was busy with a Buddy Activity for the entire afternoon with lots of different stations do visit throughout the school! Yesterday, we received some mail (bookmarks) from the Winnipeg Jets! Today, we said goodbye to Brady and hello to Spring Break with a "make your own sundae" party! We also celebrated filling up the "M Chart" by having a game day . . . lots of students brought in fun games to play with one another!

I hope everyone has a fantastic week off from school! I'm looking forward to hearing all about your adventures!

Final TWAS of 2014!

We've had a whirlwind of a week. Well, let's face it . . . the entire month has been a complete blur! Ha!

This week, we were busy with wrapping up our IBL research, working on a super fun snow globe writing and art job with Ms. Koehn, creating an adorable Christmas craft, and we saw our book buddies for a neat activity. Yesterday, we had a bonus gym class because we filled up our "O Chart" last week! Everyone had lots of fun, enjoying free time in the gym! Who knew "scooter mat" was a real thing?! Definitely not me! Ha!

Today, we had a school-wide assembly where we sang Christmas carols, stayed in our pjs all day long - watching a movie and eating LOTS of treats (thanks families!). Ms. Claydon's new puppy, Sophie made a guest appearance today too! She was sooooooo cute!

This week, Room 31 totally got into Secret Santa! We had the big "reveal" and I was surprised that so many students guessed who their SS was! Must be because of all the fantastic hints?!

Thanks for a wonderful first 4 months of Grade 5! Hope you have a fantastic Christmas break! I can't wait to hear all about your adventures!

Mad Science!

Yesterday, we had a 1 hour demo from Mad Science as a thank you for using our classroom for the Mad Science Club this year.

Yesterday we had a Mad Science demo.  We had to create a solution to help Mr. Eggbert go into his home which is a flask. Dr. Wow took construction paper and lit it on fire and then she put it in the flask and then she put Mr. Eggbert on top of the flask and then the flame took out all the air out of the flask and then the egg slid into the flask.  Then she showed us how to put a knitting needle through a balloon! Dr. Wow put Vaseline on the knitting needle and then put it through the balloon and it never even popped!  After she called up a volunteer, she picked Maddy first, then Nat to try the balloon and knitting needle trick. After that, we each made our own silly putty. It was super neat.

Surprise Visitor to Room 31!

Today at about 11:30, Railay came in for a visit. Railay is a Bichon Shih Tzu. When Ms. Wasney’s Mom brought in Railay she was very excited and started running around the room in a very crazy way. Everyone started racing to pet her. Ms. Wasney tried to take pictures of Railay but then she would run away or look away. Ms. Wasney had to pick her up and go around the room so everyone could see her. At about 11:45 she had to leave. It was fun having her visit!

Special Visitor to Room 31 . . . Tiago!

Today was the Volunteer Appreciation Tea to thank all the dedicated people out there that help out BHS in a variety of ways. My sister Leah had volunteered her time and awesome photobooth way back in February for I LOVE to read month, so she was invited too. After the tea, she stopped by the class with my adorable nephew to meet the students of Room 31. Nicholas suggested that we all get a picture together, so we did!

Today we got to see Ms.Wasney’s nephew Tiago! He was so cute, he loves to giggle and he made lots of funny noises! We all played peek-a-boo with him and we got a class photo with him when he was in his stroller. We’re guessing he likes to dance because he started to dance in his stroller. When he had to go he started to cry a little bit because he didn’t want to leave.

Hero Writing

Here are the Hero envelopes.
Over the last few weeks, the students have been writing letters to a hero. Today, several students were able to complete their good copy, decorate an envelope and take home the finished letter. I am looking forward to hearing the response from families about these heart-warming letters! Here's a summary of the process:

Here is Mrs. Augusta writing out
her letter to Daniel. We learned lots
about what good writers do doing the
writing process.
We started working on our hero writing on May 1. Mrs.Augusta told us tips about how to write our hero writing. She wrote to her son Daniel. She just wrote a rough copy so she could fix her mistakes and see how she did. And then we brainstormed about who we would do for our hero. There were a lot of options like: Dad, Mom, Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle, Aunty, Cousin, Friend, a teacher, and a Sibling.
Then we brainstormed qualities of your hero. Some of the qualities were Helpful, someone you could trust, smart, someone you look up to.
Then we wrote our good copies and made an envelope.
