Handmade Ornaments for Sale!

This week, on Wednesday and Friday, Mrs. Tresoor and I had SPIN Club kids come to before-and-after-school sessions to create ornaments to sell at our Winter Carnival taking place next week. The ornaments are $2 each and all the proceeds will be donated to WE Schools' education initiatives in Nicaragua. There are 5 different designs to choose from and they are all ADORABLE!

Shout out to my Dad for spending last Sunday with me to cut and drill all the ornaments. :)

We hope to sell ALL 245 ornaments! Bring your wallet on December 12! We will be selling them just outside of the library between 5:30 and 7:00pm.

We sure scared hunger!

The SPIN Club ran the "We Scare Hunger" campaign at the end of October. This week, Winnipeg Harvest picked up the donations of food and it weighed a total of 333 pounds! Thanks for supporting this activity.

Mr. Altomare recently met with representatives from Abundant Life Lutheran Church. BHS will once again be collecting food for hampers for our area. Last year, the church provided 64 hampers at Christmas. Some information was shared with families today . . . check your email!

SPIN Club at WE Day!

Today, Mrs. Tresoor and I took 22 Grade 5 SPIN Club members to Bell MTS Place for WE Day! It's always an inspiring day to look around at the crowd of 15 000 students and teachers and appreciate all the messages of hope, kindness, and empowerment.

You can't buy a ticket to WE Day. You EARN it. So the work from last year's SPIN Club allowed us to attend today. Talk about paying it forward!

A highlight was at the end of the day while waiting for our bus, the founder of WE Schools and WE Day, Craig Kielburger stopped to snap a pic with us!  :)

Be sure to look in an upcoming newsletter for our thoughts on the day!

Super SPIN Club!

Last Friday, Mrs. Tresoor and I dropped of 374 pairs of socks at Mosaic Newcomer Resource Network. We've been donating the socks there for the last few years.

Our "We Scare Hunger" campaign will be wrapping up next week. And we have received LOTS of food! We're looking forward to weighing it to see the final totals.

Yesterday, the SPIN Club was featured in a special WE Day insert in the Winnipeg Free Press! The article talked about our "Kiss a Goat" campaign from last spring.

SPIN Club members are heading to WE Day on Tuesday, October 30th, and are asked to be at the school by 7:50am!

Then, we are starting up our next campaign with WE Schools . . . we will be collecting non-perishable food items for "We Scare Hunger" until October 31; which will be donated to Winnipeg Harvest.

SPIN Club kicks off Socktober!

Once again, the SPIN Club is collecting NEW pairs of socks for "Socktober". This is a Kid President initiative and we have ran the campaign for the last few years. Last year, we donated over 200 pairs of socks to Mosaic Newcomer Resource Centre, and in return received hand-written notes from the new refugees that had received the socks.

We will be collecting socks until October 12.

Thanks for your support!

Best Monday ever!

We had an adorable start to the week this morning! Tara from 10 Acre Woods brought 6 week old Sheldon to BHS for our "Kiss a Goat" Assembly! Mrs. Palamar won by a landslide, but then she pledged $50 on the spot for the 2nd and 3rd place winners to also kiss the goat. Soooooo, Ms. Jeffery and I got to smooch Sheldon too! Soooooooo cute!

Thanks for your support in donating to this fundraiser! We raised $414, which allows us to purchase 8 goats for families in need through WE Schools.

Who will KISS A GOAT?!

The SPIN Club has introduced our newest campaign with WE Schools. We are participating in "We Create Change" and asking for students to purchase a ballot for $2 for the opportunity to vote on 20 staff members to kiss a goat. Every $50 raised purchases a goat for a family in need. When we ran this 3 years ago, we raised $360, and Mr. Hargreaves was the "winner"! Hahaha

An assembly will take place on Monday, May 28 to announce the winning staff member and how much money was raised. I can't wait!  :)

SPIN Club update!

Thank you so much for supporting the recent SPIN Club fundraiser with Colibri, a Manitoba based company. The proceeds of $520.50 have been sent to “We Schools” in support of education initiatives in Nicaragua.
It's been great seeing some Room 31 students already using the bags in their lunch kits!

A Cinnamony Week!

We've been super busy this week! The stage was delivered on Tuesday and we have already had a few practices in the gym! And with the gym being used, phys ed classes are outside. Today, the students got to ski! We did a cute craft with our Kindergarten book buddies. Every child is creating a snowman tea light holder/candy dish. They turned out adorable, and all have different personalities! We also drew names for Secret Santa that starts on Monday!

Mrs. Tresoor and I have also been working with SPIN Club members before and after school to make tree ornaments to sell at the Christmas concerts next week. Room 31 smells delicious!  :)

It was also an emotional week, as a funeral was held for Mr. Hargreaves, who passed away last week. He was the head custodian of BHS for over 20 years. I already miss our chats and being teased by him. Did you know one year a student dressed up as him for Halloween?! He was a fixture at BHS and will be missed. Do you remember when he had to kiss a GOAT?!

Enjoy the pictures . . . they are from our Instagram account!

SPIN Club update!

The SPIN Club was excited to run “Socktober” once again! Bird’s Hill School donated 236 pairs of socks for families in need! The socks were dropped off at Mosaic Newcomer Resource Network earlier in November.
We also participated in the “We Scare Hunger” campaign during the last two weeks of October with “WE Schools”. Winnipeg Harvest picked up over 270 non-perishable food items!
Thanks for supporting these campaigns!
Be sure to look for the SPIN Club’s table in the front foyer during the Christmas concerts! We will be continuing our tradition of selling handmade items to raise money to build a school in Nicaragua.

SPIN Club goes to WE Day!

"WE makes doing good, doable!" - Craig Kielburger

Attending WE Day is definitely one of my favourite teaching days of the school year! Today, Mrs. Tresoor and I took 16 Grade 5 SPIN Club members to Bell MTS Place to join 16 000 change-makers from Manitoba. The day is always an inspiring one and the purpose of attending WE Day is to get us pumped for a year of social justice. Tickets are NOT bought. They are earned. So, a shout-out goes to students from last year! Once again, we had great seats . . . especially since we are the youngest students to go! Hope you enjoy the video!

What inspired you the most?!

Once again the SPIN Club will be collecting NEW pairs of socks for "Socktober"; a Kid President initiative. Last year, BHS donated 464 pairs of socks to families in need through a variety of local organizations. We will be collecting socks for the first 2 weeks of October.

A successful Water Walk!

It was an amazing end to our week today! All the grade 5s participated in a 4km walk to collect water from the pits on Bird's Hill Road. It was really warm out . . . definitely the hottest day we've had yet this spring! Thanks to Mrs. Tresoor, Mrs. Dyck, Ms. Ross, Mr. Lewis, and some parent volunteers for joining us on the walk!

Today for our exit questions today, I asked:

- How many jugs did you carry?
- Would you want to do a water walk again?
- What did you learn from the experience?

The answers I got were terrific! I think the weather helped make the activity truly feel authentic! And, overall students expressed appreciation for what we have compared to what kids lack in other parts of the world.

Thanks for supporting this activity through pledges! We will gladly accept them on Monday as well! The SPIN Club will be forwarding all money to "WE Schools".

SPIN Club is planning a Water Walk

The SPIN Club will be running one final campaign of the year with "WE Schools". We will be doing a "Water Walk" and collecting pledges. Each Grade 5 student has been invited to participate in a 4km walk to carry a 4 litre milk jug to the pits (off of Bird's Hill Road). After filling the jugs with water, we will walk back to BHS.

Mrs. Tresoor and I hope that this activity will show that for some people, getting water isn't as simple as just turning on a tap! Girls in some countries walk 6km every day to fetch water and are unable to attend school because of this chore!

If you'd like to join us for the walk at 2:30 on Friday, June 2, please contact me at kwasney@retsd.mb.ca.

Thanks for your support!

Snowflakes by the SPIN Club!

We've had some awesome groups of SPIN Club members come before and after school to make beaded snowflakes this week. A BIG thank you to Mrs. Small for the fantastic idea . . . and training Mrs. Tresoor and I on Monday night! We will be selling the snowflakes outside the library during the afternoon and evening Christmas concerts on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. They are $3 each, or 2 for $5. All proceeds are going towards our global initiative with "Free the Children" - building a school in Nicaragua.

The snowflakes look lovely on a tree, in a window, or added on a gift!

Thanks for your support!

SPIN Club helping out Shamattawa youth!

The SPIN Club is collecting used running shoes to donate to the community of Shamattawa, MB. The shoes will be used for youth volleyball and basketball clubs. All sizes are needed and appreciated!

As well, Ms. Jeffrey's Grade 1 & 2 class is collecting non-perishable food items for Winnipeg Harvest. If BHS brings in 200 items, we will have a school-wide pj day!

Thanks for your support!

SPIN Club goes to WE Day!

It was an amazing day to join 16 000 difference makers at the MTS Centre for WE Day! Mrs. Tresoor, Mrs. Dyck, and I took 35 Grade 5 SPIN Club members to be inspired! There were so many fantastic speakers and performers! When we returned, the students wrote reflections about their experience. We were blown away from what they shared! We are so looking forward to a year of helping others locally and globally through "Free the Children".

Socktober Update!

Today, members from the SPIN Club stayed in at the afternoon recess to count socks! It was a tough job! After school, Mrs. Tresoor and I double-counted all the socks just to make sure of the numbers. Our grand total is . . . (drum roll, please) . . . 464 pairs! That is AWESOME! Stay tuned to find out how those socks will help out families in need!

Thanks for supporting this fundraiser!
