AAA Art inspired by Norval Morrisseau!

On January 21^st 2015 we worked with Mrs. Kulyk all morning. We learned about Norval Morrisseau and the type of art he was known for. Then, we got to create our own art! First we had to choose an animal from samples on the wall. And then we had to sketch out on a rough copy paper and do the details. The second step of this art is to draw it out on watercolour paper. Then we had to go over everything with sharpie. 

Another step was we had to paint to do the designs. The 2^nd last step was to bring it to a teacher and get it dried with a hair drier. The final step was to touch up your artwork with thick sharpie. We recommend this art to people that have a lot of time to do this art because this took us the whole morning. It just didn’t take us all morning we also did it in the afternoon!

AAA Art

On Friday, we had AAA art for the whole afternoon for our Pourquoi tale. It was in the style of Canadian Aboriginal artist: Norval Morrisseau. The first step was to trace your tile on the small piece of paper. Then you pick a sample picture of your animal off the board. If you could not find it you had to pick what Mrs. Kulyk printed off the computer. Next, you looked at the picture you had and drew it on the small paper. Once you were done you had to draw it on the tile. Then you had to outline it in Sharpie on the tile. After recess we went back to paint the tile that we did. It didn’t have to be realistic picture.

Writing with a purpose!

For the last week, we have been writing our own Pourquoi Tales. This is a school-wide project as part of the AAA program. Every class will publish a collection of Pourquoi Tales in a hardcover book. The books will be stored in the school library so that all students will have the opportunity to withdraw the books at any time. We will also be working with a local artist, Mrs. Kulyk, to create tiles to illustrate our writing. These tiles will be showcased in a permanent display in our school.

Today, I showed another awesome way we can write with a purpose . . . The Winnipeg Jets is once again holding their "Reading Takes Flight" contest. As a class, we will submit a letter explaining why OUR class should win the opportunity to welcome a Jets player to visit and read to us during "I Love to Read Month" (which is February). I have entered this contest twice before, and am crossing my fingers that the third time is the charm!

Pourquoi Tale

We all wrote are own version and we voted to see which one we would present or do. We decided to do “Why does the owl stay up at night?”. The three narrators were Nick M, Jack, and Nathaniel. And the main character in the story was owl. Owl had a nightmare and she didn’t want to sleep because she kept having nightmares. Then her friends told her to sleep in the day and stay up at night to hunt for food. So she decided to stay up at night.

One afternoon we made our masks. For my lynx mask, I used some fabric and one egg carton and the ears were made out of paper bags and I put some orange marbles for the eyes. For Zach’s moose mask, he used some pastels and cardboard. All the masks turned out so great!

On Tuesday we presented our story to classes. We watched other classes stories. We saw Mrs. Kohuts, Ms. Mitchells Mrs. Henrys and Mrs. Tressors classes. Mrs. Tressors class made interesting masks and Ms. Michells class had a really long story. And Mrs. Kohuts class was a cool presentation I thought. And Mrs. Henrys class had a really cool presentation.

Today, we will be seeing the Star Dome in the gym. I bet it will be good! Later, we will be sharing our story with our Book Buddies and watching their story!

AAA Story Telling

This afternoon, the entire school was busy presenting and watching Aboriginal stories. We worked very hard with Mrs. Kulyk to create the characters and backdrop for our story, "Nanabosho and Porcupine". Yesterday, we were invited to watch Mrs. Tresoor's class and today, we watched Mrs. Dent Scarcello & Ms. Dodd's, Mrs. Dyck's, and Mrs. Kohut's classes present their stories. We then had the chance to share our story to classes later this afternoon. It was fun to present to several different audiences! Here's a video of us:

Aboriginal Story Telling + Art = A FUN way to spend Friday afternoon!

Bird's Hill School has been lucky to receive a grant for AAA (Aboriginal Academic Achievement). Over the past few weeks, we have had a focus on Aboriginal story telling. We had Elder Jules and Mr. Cyr in to do a sharing circle and listened to a story about wolves. Recently, we worked with Ms. Qua on an Aboriginal story called 'Nanabosho & Porcupine', written by Joe McLellan & Matrine McLellan. The book shares the Aboriginal story of how the porcupine got its quills. And today . . . we worked with Mrs. Kulyk to make the characters for that story. We will be acting out the story for other classes in a few weeks. It was amazing to see the characters literally appear out of cardboard. I love the creativity of the students in Room 5!
