A "Thankful" TWAS

Thanks Max! YUM!
The students worked in the computer lab for the first time on their TWAS on Thursday. I was away at an in-service and returned to school on Friday to find that several students eagerly completed their work with the substitute! I really wasn't sure how the typing would go! Ha! Laine is sharing her TWAS this week . . .

This week at school was awesomeJ

On Monday Max brought a BIG cookie that max and his mom made it was so yummy:P. Also we did I am thankful for on our papers we put down everything we are thankful forJ
On Tuesday we did pumpkin art after it was done drying we wrote in thin tip sharpie what we were thankful for!

Word Work Wednesday
On Wednesday we played all around the world. It’s a game where the teacher says a math question and the first person to answer it wins and goes to another person. Also it was early dismissal and we got out at 3:10.

Fun Attendance!
On Thursday today in gym we played doge ball and there was another class in there so it was like war. And we are doing TWAS today.

Fall Leaves in the Wind . . . Amazing Art!

I absolutely LOVE fall! And I adore this art we did over the last 2 weeks, especially because each piece of art is totally unique. Students were asked to collect at least 5 non-crunchy leaves. We traced them onto watercolour paper, and carefully added the detail of the veins. Then, all the pencil lines were traced over with a Sharpie. Next, students used oil pastels to colour in their leaves, layering shades, if they wanted. Finally, the sky background was painted with liquid watercolours. You can see the art on Artsonia by clicking HERE. We've received loads of compliments from everyone that sees the art in the hallway!  :)

First TWAS of the year!

At the end of every week, the students will work on TWAS (This Week At School). Today, students were asked to choose 2 things from each day from the past week to write about. I think it's a great way for the students to share about all our classroom activities. Each week, a student will post their TWAS on our class blog. Eventually, students will be posting on their own blogs via Kidblog (details to be shared in the future). This week, Xavier is sharing his TWAS. He had double the work because he had to type out all of the writing from his Writer's Notebook!

Monday
Picture day
The class all got pictures and the class waited so long to get their picture.

READING STRATEGY
We were learning a strategy like go back to the period and read again. And like to sound it out.

Gym
We did flag football and skipping. We did skipping so we could test our health. For flag football we were throwing the football to a partner.

Socktober with the SPIN Club!

Mrs. Tresoor and I held our first SPIN Club (Support People In Need) meeting of the year yesterday. The club is for interested Grade 5 students that want to help others. I was so pleased to see 27 students attend the meeting! Wowza!

We participate in campaigns throughout the year with "Free the Children"; a Canadian organization. Last year we organized "Socktober" within the school. Socktober is an initiative started by Kid President. The staff and families of BHS donated 373 pairs of new socks to Nova House; a women's shelter in Selkirk, MB.

This year, the SPIN Club will once again be collecting pairs of NEW socks to be donated. Please send them in during the first 2 weeks of October.

Thanks for your support!

Here's Kid President's latest video about Socktober (which was launched today):

Book Buddies, a Pep Talk, and the Terry Fox Run!

We've had an awesome week in Room 31! We met with our Grade 2 Book Buddies from Mrs. Henry and Mrs. Dent Scarcello's classroom for the very first time. We will be getting together every Day 4 to do a variety of activities. It's so great to see the older students be the "big buddies", when they once were the "little buddies"!

We watched Kid President's "Pep Talk for Teachers and Students". We then brainstormed with our table groups all the attributes we want to "be" this year. Then, students created their own lists to aspire to!

Here's the video:

We really couldn't have asked for a better afternoon than today . . . the weather was perfect for the Terry Fox run! Several students from Room 31 volunteered to help with set-up, directing traffic, or even ran with a younger student. It's so nice to see 4/5W take on some leadership jobs at BHS! Way to go! It was really touching to read all the stickers that the students wore to state who they were running for.

Have a wonderful weekend! Be sure to bring your smile on Monday . . . it's PICTURE DAY!  :)

Open House BBQ

Thanks to so many families for making our first ever Open House BBQ a success! It was a beautiful night to spend outside and devour a hot dog! I loved seeing families sitting together on the grass; visiting and enjoying the playground!

If you didn't get a chance to sign up to provide treats for one of our class parties, and would like to, please contact me!

I also heard lots of "oooohs and aaaaahs" when parents saw our Name Art out in the hallway. You can check out the creativity in our Artsonia art gallery by clicking HERE.

Thanks for supporting your child's learning!

Summer Sharing, Dot Day, Smile Cookies, and Fire Drills!

Well, we made it through our first 5 day week of school! Yay!

On Monday, we began our Summer Sharing. We first brainstormed what is important during presentations . . . for both the speaker and the audience. This activity has been an awesome way to get to know one another better, as well as great public speaking practice! It sounds like everyone really enjoyed the summer!

Tuesday was "International Dot Day" and we did some neat Dot Day activities. We determined that it would take our class just over 3 hours to create one million dots! The students also explored with a neat app to make their dots come to life!

On Wednesday, Room 31 students were treated to "Smile Cookies" from Tim Hortons in support of the Children's Hospital. It was a delicious treat! We also had our first library class and the students were eager to sign out books.

On Thursday we started our science unit. The Grade 4s are learning about animal habitats and the Grade 5s will study weather.

Today, we did a super fun team building activity. The cheers of success were awesome to hear during the morning! We also had our 2nd fire drill in 2 days!

Remind: a cool tool for school!

On Friday, September 11th, a "Room 31 Information Package" went home with the students. One of the handouts had information about "Remind". This is a one-way messaging tool that helps teachers share important updates and reminders with parents. You can subscribe by text or email, or with the Remind app. All personal info is kept private.

Thanks to Mrs. Dent Scarcello for sharing this neat tool with teachers. Room 31 families used it last year starting in January and it was awesome!

I encourage you to sign up for it!

First week fun!

We've had a whirlwind of a first week in Room 31!

On Wednesday, we had a school-wide assembly. It was great to get together  and welcome some new faces to BHS . . . staff and students. We have 2 "new to BHS" students in Room 31 and I have been so pleased to see how friendly and helpful everyone is to our new boys! Well done!

Yesterday, we had an introduction to the Smartboard; which the students loved. They even got to try out doing their attendance on it!

Today we snuck in a super neat "Name Art" job. This year, artwork created by the students will be posted on an online art gallery called Artsonia. Please find a permission form and info about this in a package of notes sent home on Friday, September 11th.

One of the perks of being some of the oldest students in the school is leadership jobs! Already this week, 4 students have been lunch helpers for the Kindergarteners and Grade 1s. Training for patrols will take place on Monday morning, and the Peacemakers will be starting to be on duty during recesses in the next few weeks.

A BIG thank you to Mr. Hargreaves, Mr. Bishop, and Ms. Beal for getting the school in tip-top shape over the summer. You can actually see your reflection in the floors! Wow!

All of these pictures are from our class Instagram account. You should follow us! @mswasneysclass

Have a fantastic weekend! Hope you get a chance to enjoy the beautiful weather!

Welcome to Room 31!

I am always excited at this time of the year. And even now, as a teacher, I have a hard time sleeping on the night before the first day of school!

Over the last few weeks, teachers have been busy getting their classrooms ready and catching up with one another! Lots of BHS staff had great summer adventures to share about!

Today, BHS staff had a full day of learning to inspire fresh ideas.

I hope you're looking forward to a super year, as much as I am!

See you tomorrow!

- Ms. Wasney  :)
