Winter Olympic Activity Day!

Today was such a fun day! We had our Winter Olympic Activity Day, thanks to the planning by Mrs. Rand and a small committee of teachers. Unfortunately because of the weather, we were forced to stay inside, but we still managed to visit 12 different stations throughout the day! We started off the morning with a parade of flags and opening ceremonies - with the lighting of the Olympic torch and raising of the Olympic flag. The grade fives were excellent leaders with our Kindergarten buddies from Mrs. Henry's class.

Hope you enjoy the video!

I love to read month starts!

We've had a fun week in Room 31. On Tuesday, we had an assembly and Anthony was drawn to spin the wheel. He won "flashlight reading", which we did today. It was awesome! Wednesdays in February will be spirit days, so this past week we had "Hats off to Reading". Everyone participated in our class! We also did loads of science for our forces and simple machines unit. We did some writing, math, french, and even fit in some beautiful art! Mrs. Rand is keeping us busy with learning some olympic sports in gym! So fun!

Here is Gabby's TWAS from Kidblog (the pictures are from our class instagram account):

As the wind blows is where one person stands in the middle and asks a question, if you like what they asked then you move to another chair. If you don't like it you stay and one person will be in the middle and then they ask the question. We also shared something we are looking forward to and a challenge. That was my Tuesday.
On Wednesday we had hats off to reading. We could  wear a hat to school and I did. we also had BHS reads. I am reading Fitzgerald-trout still and I am on  chapter 10. We also had gym. We did biathlon. biathlon is skiing and shooting. We took our shoes off and skied in our socks and then we had to throw a bean bag in a hoop. It was a fun gym class. That was Thursday.

A yummy end to the week!

We were able to start presenting our projects on weather this week! It was so fun to see everyone's research and hard work! We also managed to finish up our amazing art project (which are posted on Artsonia). And today, Chantal brought in brownies to celebrate "chocolate cake day", which is tomorrow! It was a delicious way to end our week!

Here is Cami's TWAS from her Kidblog account:

MONDAY
on Monday we had art and we talked about an art project originally created by Paul Klee and he worked with triangles, squares, and some other shapes and we made a city inspired by one of his pieces of art. To make the project we used pencil, sharpie, a stencil or ruler, and water color paint! the first step was to make your building with a ruler/stencil and a pencil and make pretty square and triangle designs and some of your own to make it unique and make a circle somewhere above. The second step was to take a permanent marker or sharpie and trace your pencil lines and after the marker dries you erase the pencil lines. After the third step is to paint the sky and castle/buildings with the paint (we kept our castle and sky 2 different tones <cool> <warm> colors.) Then we took permanent marker/sharpie and went over the lines that were there to make sure they weren't colored over or faded... and we are done. The artist calls the piece "castle and sun" but I made mine castle and moon.

TUESDAY
On Tuesday we had science and we were not researching about our weather topics (our science unit is weather) but we are presenting our presentations and we have 5-6 presentations everyday but I presented on Tuesday and Tuesday is the only day with 6 presentations because we did not present on Monday and we have 23 students in the class so if you divide it by 4 you get groups of five and one left over and you cant divide a presentation so on Tuesday we have 6. I presented about tornados and what tornados do, cause, how they develop, some interesting facts, and more! On Tuesday we also had BHS and my favorite books to read are mockingbird, it is very interesting and if I could give a rating for how much I like it I would give it an A+.
WEDNESDAY
On Wednesday we had French and we had a paper with boxes including questions in French and we went around the class asking a whole bunch of people the questions and depending on if they said yes or no (in French) I would fill their name in the box and I did not finish so I had to work on it on another day. We also had extra recess earned by Maxx!!! and I enjoyed extra time outside and I pretty much stayed on the swings because they are so much fun!!!
THURSDAY
On Thursday we had time to finish up work we have not yet finished and I got to finish my Wednesday work so I quickly asked a few more people some French questions and I was FINALLY DONE!!! On Thursday we also had math and we talked about patterning and I got all the question right and I was really proud of myself and I know patterns are important because its helpful to predict what's going to come next and etc.
FRIDAY
Today is Friday and today was chocolate cake day and Chantal brought brownies... its pretty much a type of cake to me!!! the brownies were so good with a slight sprinkle of sprinkles. Today we also had TWAS and that is what I'm doing right now and I'm very happy you checked out this weeks TWAS and that will rap up This Week At School.

We've had a busy week of wrapping up our science research projects. I'm really excited for the students to present them next week! We finished our graphing unit in math with a pop quiz and started patterning. Today, we worked on a beautiful art job, modeled after artist Paul Klee. It's taking loads of patience, but I know the end result will be worth it!

Hello 2018!

Wow! We're so happy that the week didn't start out as cold as it's ending! Unfortunately, we've had indoor recesses and bussing for the last 2 days. It's been awesome getting back into the routine of school and hearing all about the holidays. Before Christmas, we had worked really hard on our paper blogs. This week, we were able to do the final step: commenting. And then we got to try out Kidblog for the first time on Thursday! Notes went home with information for families about joining Kidblog to allow posts to be seen. Please click HERE for the link. From now on, students will post their weekly TWAS write-ups every Friday. We will also use the blog as a way of sharing other learning experiences from Room 31. So exciting!

Here is Haylee's first TWAS from her Kidblog account:

On Monday we did 3-2-1 sharing about our Christmas holidays. What you had to do was share 3 fun facts, 2 things you will miss about the holidays, (now that they are over) and 1 thing that surprised you. I shared about how I got an iPod, a drone and MUCH more! I also shared about how I would miss staying up late! Another thing we did on Monday was Library. I took out a book called "The thing about jelly fish" It looks like it is a good book.

On Tuesday we did a new art project. We made 2018 firework art!  What you had to do first was draw and cut out bubble numbers for stencils. The numbers you had to do were 2, 0, 1, and 8 since it is now 2018! Then we put tape on the back of each number and then stuck them on to a piece of blue paper. To make the fireworks we used chalk pastel of two different colors for each number. All you had to do was make little lines from your stencil. so the numbers would stand out. Then we took the tape off and added sharpie! Another thing we did was BHS reads. I am reading a book called OCDaniel. It is really good

On Wednesday we did paper blog commenting. What we did first was put our paper blogs on our desk. Then we walked around the classroom and read each others paper blogs and wrote comments on sticky notes. I got 4 comments. Another thing we did on Wednesday was science research on the laptops. We are researching different kinds of Weather disasters. I am researching about Droughts.

On Thursday we helped our little buddies log on to the laptops. It was so cute! We also got to play math games with them! I am with a boy named carter in kindergarten and with Emily in grade 5. Another thing we did was our Kid blog intro! We learned how to log on make an avatar and type our first post!

On Friday/today we did our first TWAS on kid blog!/The post I am doing now! I was so excited to type up my 2nd post! Another thing we are doing is presenting our French scripts! My partner is Ciera!
