A Cloudy Classroom!

This 4-day week flew by! By the sounds of it, lots of us had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!

On Tuesday, we saw our Book Buddies from Mrs. Henry's class, we did math, gym, an art reflection, and did the coolest science experiment! We made a cloud in a jar! So fun!

On Wednesday, I headed out with 6 Room 31 students to the divisional flag football tournament at Kildonan East. We had 34 Grade 4 and 5 students represent BHS. It was a pretty blustery day! A BIG thank you goes out to so many parents for coming out to cheer us on . . . and for bringing hot chocolate and treats! YUM! When we returned, we headed to the computer lab and then to music.

On Thursday, we did BHS Reads, had a class meeting, did a writing prompt, learned about the water cycle in science, did the strength-a-thon in gym, and did some math.

Today, we did BHS Reads, started some Christmas songs in Choir, did a writing job to get ready for Kidblog, visited the gym, and worked on TWAS.

The Dog House Canteen was open for 2 successful days this week. And the SPIN Club started advertising for our first campaign - Socktober! Thanks to Rhyann who brought in socks before the campaign had even officially started!  :)

SPIN Club launches SOCKTOBER!

The SPIN Club is officially launching Socktober, a Kid President initiative! Last year, BHS donated 557 pairs of NEW socks to families in need! We even received thank you letters from new refugees that appreciated the donation from us!

The Socktober campaign will run from October 17 to 31.

Thanks for your support!

I'm thankful for YOU!

We've had a busy 4 day week! I've been so impressed with how the students of Room 31 are loving "BHS Reads" and our "Read to Self" time! This group of kiddos truly love reading!  :)

We started off the week with a new attendance on the Smartboard (always a hit), new spots, and new nametags for our desks. We have been doing LOTS of place value in math and loads of science. We even fit in a fun leaf art activity!

Today, the students had the day off, but teachers were able to choose a workshop for the morning. I headed over to Kildonan East Collegiate to learn about coding with other RETSD teachers. Then, all the BHS staff joined up for a school-wide in-service for the afternoon. It's always interesting when the teacher becomes the student! Ha!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Take time to think about all the things you're thankful for!

A picture perfect week!

Wow! I can't believe we wrapped up the end of September this week! On Monday, we anxiously waited our turn for Picture Day! We also had our first Class Meeting.

On Tuesday, we worked on a Heart Map . . . a neat thing to have at the front of our writer's notebooks for when we need an idea for writing. We started an art job as well.

On Wednesday, the students did a great job with Word Work Wednesday. We also did Science, where we discussed the "Flood of the Century" and even watched a few videos of it. The students were so surprised about the destruction and relief efforts!

On Thursday, we learned a new reading strategy, did Social Studies, and French! We also worked on an activity where students expressed attributes that we want to "be" this year. At lunch recess, it was the first Flag Football practice of the year!

Today, several Room 31 students went to Bird's Hill Park to participate in the cross country run. We met up with our Book Buddies in the afternoon.

Have a great weekend! Hope you get a chance to enjoy the beautiful weather!

We are looking forward to Monday . . . the Dog House Canteen will be back! During the month of October, all proceeds will be donated to Ronald McDonald House. Everything is $1. You can find a list of the menu in the BHS newsletter.

A week fit for a hero!

We have had a great week in Room 31! It was awesome to meet old and new families at the Open House BBQ on Wednesday night. Some of the best things I heard were how much a child was loving Grade 5 so far and how beautiful our classroom is! Awwwww! The students persevered at their first "Word Work Wednesday" . . . with a few hints, of course! Ha!

Thursday was a gorgeous day for the Terry Fox Run! It was extra special because there are 2 students in our room that have lost a parent to cancer. It touched my heart to see classmates name them as someone who they were running for. Several Room 31 kids helped out as leaders and buddy runners for younger students for the run. Well done everyone!  :)

Today, we worked in groups to make lists of "why writers write" and "where we find writing". SO many great ideas were shared! We also earned a "mini" reward on the R Chart. The students received free time in the computer lab!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend! Don't forget . . . it's PICTURE DAY on Monday!

The first full 5-day week of many!

BHS Reads!
Today's exit question was: "Describe the first 5-day week of Grade 5". It was wonderful to get so many positive answers, like "fantastic", "fun", "awesome", "great", and "challenging"! We were busy with Summer Sharing every day this week. I love this activity because not only do we get to know one another more, but it's also great practice for speaking in front of the class. The students had such fun adventures over the summer! We also started BHS Reads . . . this year, each classroom is starting off the day with at least 10 minutes of independent reading. Room 31 is loving this so far! We visited the library for the first time on Monday too.

On Wednesday, the patrols had training for part of the morning. We met with our Book Buddies from Mrs. Henry's Grade 2/3 class for the first time. I surprised the students with SMILE cookies from Tim Hortons. All the proceeds go towards the Children's Rehab Foundation. This is pretty neat because there are students in our school (even in our classroom) that benefit from the CRF with a variety of equipment.

Thursday was "International Dot Day" which was inspired by the book "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. We did lots of fun dot day activities, including starting an amazing art job! We are creating self portraits in the style of American artist Roy Lichtenstein. He loved using old-fashioned comic strips as his subject matter. The art is taking loads of patience, but is turning out so great!

Thanks for a fun week! Be sure to enjoy the colours of fall out and about!

And with that, the first week is done!

Friday Afternoon writing job! What a
busy first week!
We have had a fantastic first week of Grade 5! I am really enjoying this group of students so far! We have had loads of fun getting to know one another AND working together! We did a very challenging team building activity today with only pipe-cleaners! One of the best moments happened when Carter Grace shared a Dolly Parton song (Working 9 to 5) and all the girls danced at the front of the room this morning! It was so adorable! Carter is really looking forward to going to the concert on Monday!

Hope you enjoy the video of some of the things we have done during our first week of school! I can't wait to see how our Name Art turns out! We'll keep you posted on Instagram!

Have a super weekend! And, don't forget "summer sharing" starts on Monday!

Welcome back to school!

Wow! I couldn't ask for a better start to the first day of school! I was ambushed with squeals and hugs! It was so awesome to see old and new students today! We are lucky to have seven "Room 31 Experts" with us this year. And boy, did they ever share their expertise today!

We had a phenomenal first day of Grade 5 and I'm excited to see this group learn and grow each day. They will become the leaders of BHS this year and I'm really looking forward to working with them!

School's out!

Today, we had a recognition assembly. I was able to brag about my Peacemakers and the SPIN Club members! And the girls from the Dog House Canteen revealed how much was donated to the Canadian Red Cross. A whopping $1205.95 has been sent in support of relief efforts for the fires in Fort McMurray.

This afternoon we had our Hawaiian-themed party. Thanks to Rebecca and her family for suggesting such a fun idea! Rebecca also brought in leis for everyone in our class! We had so many adorably delicious treats too! Thanks families!

Thanks for a great year! I know the world holds great things for you all! Please keep us posted with your summer adventures through Kidblog. The student accounts will continue to be active until mid-August.

Try to cross off a few things on the "summer to do list"! I know I'm going to try my best! Ha!
